This is not my favorite Star Wars movie, but my favorite Star Wars memory comes from seeing this movie. I will never forget the feeling of sitting in the theatre. And the opening shot of the Star Destroyer going into the shadow of the planet. I immediately felt like we were back. After a decade+ of first loving, then being in denial about, then finally accepting the prequels were bad. That first shot and the ensuing opening scenes filled me with new hope. The woman I went with said she could feel my excitement and relief sitting next to me. I understand some of the issues people have with TFA. But to me this was the best possible way to bring us back to this universe. I will never forget the feeling I had leading up to, during and walking out of this theatre.

That’s a good idea! I do like how it is though, I always thought Kylo taking off his helmet was a mistake of arrogance by his character cause it reveals to Rey that he’s just a young person like her.

Philip Dunphy true. In an interview JJ did say they thought a lot about that reveal. IIRC he mentioned how he liked how the mask makes people assume he is deformed in some way, and then when he takes it off he looks like a “prince.”

The whole rebel- Resistance thing does make sense when you think about it. In the OT the Empire was in power, thus they were rebels. in TFA the New Republic is in power, and the First Order is occupying Systems. Leia is running a Resistance in First Order Space.

I know this is old but y'all ask about how starkiller base is cut into the planet. I'm sure by now atleast some of you have played Fallen Order, in that there's a part where Cal escapes Illum and finds out the empire has begun a mass excavation, well at some point after that you get an exterior shot of the planet and it's very clearly the beginnings of starkiller base. J:FO takes place about 5 years after episode 3, so that means that Palpatine must have been working on building starkiller base since he came into power. This is important because Illum is a jedi sacred planet and is where Yoda would take younglings to get kyber crystals, so it's kind of a big deal it's gone. Also I'm fairly sure the first starkiller shot absolutely destroyed Coruscant because it was the political center of the galaxy and the whole point of that shot was to take out the republic. Kill the past I guess...

***Spoilers for one of the new canon books***, Leia discovers that The First Order is forming after the New Republic has been around for a few years, she tries to convince the Republic of the growing threat and they don't believe her because her reputation was damaged when it was revealed she was Darth Vader's daughter. So she and the few people who do believe her form the Resistance to resist the growing threat of the First Order.

Coming back to TFA is such a gut-wrenching thing because the first 30 or so minutes of the film (up until the rathtar scene), is so good and so memorable, and then it seemingly falls off the cliff for me with the poor/convenient storytelling elements, and then things continue to get worse IMO in TLJ and TROS. In regards to the 'how are they supposed to get through the shields of Starkiller Base?' all they had to do was mention that the shields had to be lowered when the base is siphoning the energy from the star to charge the weapon, and that fixes that issue. There are so many points in TFA that one additional line of dialogue would have fixed the flaws/in-universe logic issues, and it's so frustrating.

The New Republic does have an army, they have gotten too complacent during peace-time. The Resistance is seen as a group of extremists, and the Republic funding is secret. The First Order are seen as mostly a fringe-state of pests not worth considering.

I think Force Awakens is the most difficult movie to place in the rankings up to this point. My rankings of the first six movies is exactly the same. I also struggle with whether TFA goes above RotJ or below it. Ultimately I give the edge to Jedi, but it’s really close.

My brother in law has a theory that Kylo didn't ignite the lightsaber but Han realized that Kylo meant he needed to kill him so Han ignites in so Kylo can still have some light inside him. I'm still not sure what to think about that theory.

In all 9 saga films, a huge Galactic Empire, a myriad of technologies and creative sci-fi ideas and the ONLY doomsday weapon ANYONE can come up with is the Death Star!?! The average asshole can come up with a handful of doomsday weapons the First Order could use just thinking about it for fun. I always liked the idea of a weapon that destroys all living biological life on a planet but keeps the technology and resources intact for conquering. They just really needed to get away from giant beams of energy that destroy planets, ships, etc. Even TLJ has “death star tech”! Enough already! lol

I will add in that while Awakens is fantastic - it’s a very shallow experience, because it’s almost funny how similar it is from A New Hope from an overall standpoint. While I was watching it for the first time; I was able to tell, and it interrupts the movie for me.

The final scene should have been R2D2 going to Luke, as Luke turns around he can play a message from Leia. As the message ends he shoots the lightsaber out like in ROTJ, Luke does a flip and catches. Luke would have left straight away. Don't send some random girl.

The map was to the origin planet of the Jedi that the Empire had. Luke didn’t leave a map behind. But I’m that really should’ve been clearer.

I don't know that it should've. You got it through context, therefore it works. Not every little thing needs to be spelled out. That was some of the criticisms leveled against the prequels; that they tell too much. Learning how a map to Luke isn't required to enjoy the movie, but if you pay attention and look for it you are rewarded with the knowledge

The force awakens was my first star wars experience. I remember very vaguely watching attack of the clones as a kid on TV but force awakens was my first real experience, and I loved it. Then I went back and watched the whole star wars saga, and although I think it's good, but it's a bit disappointing in terms of how much they just copy a new hope. Now there's a resistance and a first order, how does that happen isn't explained and how rey can do everything, its jarring sometimes. At first u don't mind it but then the jedi mind trick, knowing how to use the force and etc. The plot of destroying the star killer base is weak whilst fun. But still I love the characters here . Finn, poe, Kyle, rey and etc Oh my days the r2 thing was awful. He just had the rest of the map, and was just there the whole time
