Now that this is released I love how it actually works as expected. Made a world, dove into its legends and realized there was the dwarf necromancer, Melbil, and realized that not only is he the arch-villian of the world (has destroyed at least 6 different civs of all different races, turning the eastern continent into a zombie hellscape) but he is actually still alive. The idea to make an adventurer coming from one of the last remaining human strongholds with the goal of killing the evil necromancer, was just too obvious.

I never before really understood what Tarn is doing with dwarf fortress. But now i do. He is on the frontier of procedural generated content. He is laying the brickroad for everone coming after that. A visionary and explorer. I'am deeply impressed by his analysis and plot creation. I never thought he was looking at other games and analyse their take on immersion.... to make an automated system to procedural generate the experience. coming back to this years later and something I appreciate a lot now is Tarn's attitude to that "what if the player wipes out the bandit camp and loses the thread" idea. my first response would probably be to try and find some way to make that not happen, but he makes a good point. the player heard about bandits murdering villagers, so they went out and stopped the bandits. that's a complete story in itself. it's not THE complete story but it's a story, the adventurer was told about the plight of the townsfolk and went and solved it. it might not be the stuff of epics or whatever but not everything has to be

God I love this game more and more with every update. One of those few games that you can truly play however you want. My favorite is make a world then get my civilization going in a couple fortresses and stir up some drama in the world using them, then when they are set up how I want I start an adventure in said world. One of my favorite aspects is that you basically get to set your own narrative and story for your game. Truly an application of creativity.

While coincidentally i m losing my life in Rimworld&mods last week (i really like it)..DF is the father AND the future if we live to the day all the features get implemented.In Rimworld there are just maths what decides by who and why and how hard you ll get raided-while in DF might be an actual rumor of an artifact you possess that "really" got from mouth-to-ear from the other side of the map..or might not.Rimworld its like a lite-arcade mode of DF :)
@yuripantyhose49735 жыл бұрын
True, Rimworld needs at least several dozen mods to feel somewhat as deep like Dwarf Fortress. The only problem with Rimworld is when you launch it with 30+ mods it takes 20min to start lol. But like you say, even with hundreds of new tech, items, needs, factions, rimgenetics and bionics the game is still superficial in that you are not meant to conquer the planet, like Ludeon the creator of Rimworld said, a colony is only meant to last for a decade or so whereas in Dwarf Fortress current build a Fort can last 200-1000 years with entire family lineages depending on how much "fun" you want. That being said my current Rimworld game finally has all the "end game" tech mods since they got updated to 1.0, so that will be interesting.

Imagine if when going through legends, you could look at kings who "121 Held a war council with o+ Ariah Urin and o/> Oln Tarnfoot. Oln suggested a feinting strategy, but Ariah convinced the king to take a direct approach" Since the events are interactions between historical figures, they could be recorded in the history. Would give a direct point for HFs "assuming an identity" to convince their enemy to take a bad war approach. Could also lead to the losing advisor in the debate getting angry and trying to implement their plan, or trying to assassinate their king to put the king's son on the throne. The sky is the limit. With how complex DF is right now, when he still calls it an alpha, imagine how complex it will be in 2475AD when he finishes it!

@@orlandolomelino2184 But on the topic of World-Building, the world-building in Rimworld is terrible. There are hardly any factions and they are randomly scattered around the map. Even if your colony is across the planet and you've destroyed all local enemy settlements they will literally trek thousands of miles just to attack you with a few people(Something not done in dwarf fortress only local factions dare to interact with you). It's seriously not that hard to make the factions more realistic but Tynan hasn't made any major changes in years, not counting the pointless DLC which added royalty for some reason. Outdated, I know, but an adventure mode update? I did not check the wiki yet about diplomacy but as he said, so far the game is about spawning and destroying mostly, right? I am more curious about expanding peaceful relationships, sending out own new settlements, switching control between main and off-site settlements, repopulating creatures without modding and mending war relationships that started because you misclicked a wooden item in the trade menu which dooms your FPS to the point you retire out of sheer boredom...

You could basically make/mod in a Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple like character who goes around solving crimes and suspicious murders after they implement this villain scheme in the game. Or something like the Ankh-Morpork City Watch from Terry Pratchett's Discword books (just using the already existing military squad options). A generic, emergent police procedural kind of thing. Pretty damn awesome.

Thank you Tarn. My favorite games are CK2, GTA: San Andreas, EU (3-4), Hard Time (by Mdickie), The Guild games and Mount and Blade. All of these involve interaction between factions, and that is the "genre" that I love the most. The reason I play DF2 is just for adventure mode, it is the different factions that intrigue me so much. Especially how it has multiple levels. Right now there is not much to do, but it is still enough to entertain me. The factions in DF2 are so many compared to other games, it is truly overdosed on factions, which is great. My dream game is that you play on a microlevel and you can engage inside factions on all levels, as a solider, a super solider that turns tides, a faction leader, a wizard apprentice, a member of a bandit group, an entertainer and so on. I think Adventure Mode DF2 is destined to become the greatest game in this "faction" genre. I had high hopes for The Guild 3 but it turned out to be SHIT, it seems that DF2 will be the best "faction game".

I'm sorry, but when I hear "go cause trouble" in the context of DF, I just imagine a character with Martial Arts maxed, going around and dislocating people's legs (which makes them pass out from pain) and then killing them when there's time. O:-)

You can check the dev log: bay12games.com/dwarves for weekly updates to progress. He doesn't state everything he's programmed in, because he likes for their to be surprises to players when they download the next update, and things for them to find on their own, but the main line is all stated with interesting stories to show progress. The entire Villains update is just an inbetween from main development to give players something to occupy themselves with in DF during what is called the "Big Wait", which will be the programming of the Myth And Magic release, which promises to be absolutely EPIC!!!! Randomly generated magic systems, and random entire world building myth (e.g. This mountain range was created when this god slew a forest titan which then became the mountains).

My biggest problem in adventure mode is that I find it hard to understand what's going on. Upon creating a character I'd like to know the backstory of the realm who's at war what civilizations are there is and how is my settlement I'm in right now related to all of that and when I talk to people I'd like to get a little bit more information about what's going on and when I asked for Missions I'd like a little more information about why this is a mission and where it is. I feel like when I talk to him BC they know everything yet they won't tell me anything that does not relate to the building I am in.
