Roland Fantom Synthesizer At Knobcon 2019

At Knobcon 2019, Roland introduced a new Fantom line, three new flagship synth workstations.
The Fantom offers a deep synth engine, sequencing, beatmaking tools, a big touchscreen display, lots of MIDI and CV connectivity options and more.
We talked with Roland synth guru Ed Diaz, who gave us an overview and demo of what the Fantom can do.

With a background in education - I admire Ed's instructions - just great in many ways. I am confused if this workstation is a hybrid using both samples and generating synth subtractive algorithms?

I have the RD2000 and love it. I'm debating if I should get the new FANTOM or a KRONOS. In the back of my mind I keep thinking KORG will soon replace the KRONOS with something new as it has been around for a while.

I'm a current Fantom G owner and honestly it doesn't look like the new sequencer is a step forward at all. 16 tracks on the new Fantom vs. 128 tracks on the G. Plus the screen has gotten smaller. Honestly all Roland would've had to do is to modernize the G, add new synth engines and sounds, instead of reinventing the wheel with less features.

Roland has been behind the times since the Fantom G came out lol. The Fantom G was never an upgrade over the X. What a surprise the new Fantom wouldn't be an upgrade over the G I mean it's only been like 15 years.

I mean its more modern....everybody is shifting sequencing over to laptops Yamaha doesn’t even have a sequencer in montage they say you should have a DAW if you have a 4K keyboard.....how do you like lifting that fantom G lol

@@himester666 That's a good point. However, someone like me used to do everything in MPC's and synths. I would only use protools for recording. I gave away and sold off all my equipment, and a decade later returned to being completely in the box. I want a workstation synth to go back to basics and better workflow. I feel that when your restricted you create better stuff because you have find a way. Hell, I made magic with a dr550, roland u-20, and a Alesis Nano bass in high school lol. No sequencer at all though? No way. With the Fantom the 16 tracks is useable, but they really should have least made it 32. I hate using virtual synths but hardware manufacturers are making it impossible to do so. I gave up on them a long time ago. I should probably bite the bullet and buy a Fantom X7 for the third time. The newer Fantoms really arent that much ahead for the money.

My biggest complaint with my Fantom G is that it does not play well with a DAW. Has there been any changes to fix this problem?

As much as i heard from other reviews, it should be fully integrated with logic and with further updates it should come further integration with major daw's.

How many people, bands, etc actually use an apple laptop computer for midi control over a Windows Laptop? There are more and better programs for DAW on windows platform than apple mac.

Actually, a lot. Almost every professional producer/composer uses Mac.Also, most of the DAWs are available on both platforms.

I wonder why the memory is only expandable via USB drive and not SSD. SSD would be much faster and you wouldn't have to worry about losing it if you travel.

It sounds like the Fantom is pre-mapped to MainStage. The Fantom is a MIDI controller so I don't see why you can't manually map it in your software of choice.

There are just as many pc users as Mac users these days I don’t know why Roland always chooses to cater to Mac only. I have the Roland Integra 7 and none of that editor software ever worked in Cubase on PC

They cater to mac because that is what I use. If I used a microshaft OS then they would have gone with that. THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND ME! Oh, wait, I'm not Trump. Hahaha.

Very nice 👍 . I bought the Fantom 6. But none of the pianos sound good. I have a FA06. The pianos are better than that. But not as good as the Motif or Kronos. Any advice how can they sound better?

As a Roland users, we need the new professional Arranger keyboard like the old G70 with the new technology! The current Roland Arranger is not good and Yamaha now are the leader You guy can make the new phantom which not too many will buy? If you build a good arranger your potential clients are world's wide
