I've heard (and read on the manual), that the arpeggiator on the fantom, not only is way less "intelligent" than that on the Jupiter-X(m), but can't be used to arpeggiate different patterns on different zones. Meaning you can't have magnificent duets (or more) of arpeggios kinda "responding to each other" or completing each other, as on Kebu's performance in Abbey Road Studios with the Jupiter-Xm, nor can you have drums arpeggiated on a different pattern as the bassline. So i'm gonna ask to you, Roland guys : why is that ? And why is the "flagship" less powerful than the two "subordinates" Jupiter X/Xm ? And is it planned in a coming new firmware release to catch up Fantom's arpeggios performance with its smaller brothers ?

We should be able to program different type of arpeggios or chord memories and assign them in each zone of a scene and write the configuration. This controllers section (arp, chord and transpose) is very usefull but works too much indepedently. We need to customize and to write different config of these controllers in each Scene.

Also, you need to set the ARP setting on for each zone that doesn't have it on by default. If not the arpeggios won't work.

Could probably use the step LFO’s routed to volume and pitch, along with the arp, to create custom arpeggios. Set the arp to do 1/8th or 1/16th notes and route it to multiple zones. Use the step lfo’s to modify the incoming arp notes which will give each zone it’s own unique arp.

Some improvements I think needed are: 1. Ability to import user midi snips 2. More arpeggios per scene, the Fantom should be capable of one per zone 3. Theres no real easy way to just get simple arps that I can tell, you kind of have to go through every variation to get something close. 4. How to change note length/gate? 5. Is there an easy way to turn note accents all together?

How many arpeggiators can be played at once in real time? At Yamaha Montage/Modx you can set 8 different arpeggiators to sing live with! That is, on one arpeggiator I put a set of drums and sing a rhythm, on another a percussion set, on another a bass, on another piano, on another guitar, on another a pad, on another a synth and on the 8th, 8 different sounds that I can play with my right hand and that I can change in real time? I would like someone who is good at Fantom to tell me how many arpeggiators he can play in real time like Montage does for example? With the Korg Nautilus, I know that it can play in Combi mode only with 2 arpeggiators + rhythm.

It looks like so far no change in arpeggios between the Roland FA06 and the new Fantom. IMHO, the arp variations are a pain on the FA06, and it would have made much better sense to store these variations as new arps instead. You spend a lot of time auditioning to try to find out something that you actually want to use.

You guys succeed in making a really great workstation that makes me more than happy. And then you miss out on such a fundamental feature? That would have been no rocket science to design an elegant workfkow around this. While the basic features of the arpeggiator are great somebody did not make their homework thinkingabout how people will want to use that feature. I am hoping for the next OS update. if you need some design ideas contact me, i know what is necessary for UI/UX

Why all the arp and chord TOYS !!!!!!! Come on Ed...lets get down to the Sampler...or is it to embarrassing? No REAL SAMPLER (NO sample to keyboard for creating patch's or Drum kits), NO REAL SEQUENCER (No linear sequencer) NO AUDIO TRACKS, NO ABILITY to even load a Standard Midi File (SMF) What is going on at Roland?..they put all this toyish CASIO stuff like Chord memory and Arp's that NO real keyboardist uses and takes off all the true WORKSTATION CAPABILITIES...A Workstation is supposed to be "All in One Box"...NOT having to add thousands of $$$ worth of external gear like Laptops etc...i lived and breathed Roland Workstations and 8 cant believe im actually thinking about a KRONOS....simply because Roland dont manufacture a True Workstation anymore.. this attempt doesnt deserve the Fantom name...the FA was the same, a FAIL...so what does Roland do? Make a model the same and add a heap of external controls and more TOYISH Features like being able to draw waveforms on the screen (Fairlight much?) And charge 3 times the price...$6500.00 for a 76 note here and it doesnt even have a real sampler or the ability to load even an SMF wich is an industry standard....come on! Even you have to admit its a fail as a Workstation Ed...its definately not....or even a Fantom. Roland has to do some BIG OS software upgrades to make this thing even come close to its Fantom predecessors before its worth upgrading to...even then it has to come down in price by half....i was so excited when i heard about the new Fantom...but now? Just dissapointment....at this stage its a bigger fail than the FA Series....way bigger!...my live rig is Fantom X7, G6 and XR with not a laptop/DAW/Mainstage or Tablet to be found... this new Fantom doesnt do even what my X7 can do live. Who the HELL was Roland listening to in its development...Casio users?,...15yo bedroom bashers??? Certainly not Fantom owners and live Pro Keyboardists....A Step Sequencer?....for crying out loud the sequencer in this thing isnt as powerful as an MC500! I mean really.....! ...KRONOS just keeps looking better and better....and Never....and i mean NEVER would i have thought i would ever say that....the people saying that this new model is good...obviously are young....as they dont know what the previous Fantoms could do...the new Fantom has gone Backwards.

I am in the market for a Fantom 8 but now that I have read your review I am teeter tottering between this and the Kronos. Can I load samples into the Kronos??
@ErraticFaith Жыл бұрын
Kronos was an extremely expensive (at the time) consolidation of the Oasys platform. A workstation, in the vein to which they used to exist - no longer does. There is zero interest in such a product. Both from serious professional consumers (performance artists) and the brands/manufacturers themselves. A part of it is cost and redundancy. These days things are rapidly replaced and upgraded. They seem like minor leaps at times but architecturally speaking they aren't. What you think is 'more of the same' has to be made compliant and brought up to date with new technology. Also - 10 years could well be the redundancy period for musical artists themselves. So what one band needed - fades with them. A new artist appears - and if they want similar capability but with a more modern feature set; that is what is produced. Because companies must make money. If what you said really rang true - the company would be bankrupt. I assume you realize that. Personal preference isn't the same as fact and company net profit. Due to the shift in market (user net total) it's unlikely any company will waste their time with a cutting edge workstation. Because it won't be likely to last 10 years as they once did. And the RnD for a product that stays valid; next to people simply using VSTs and easily upgraded (cheaper) controllers - just isn't worth it. Say for example that I spend the time on a linear well designed sequencer. Charge a fair amount for it. Why bother? If I can rely on customers preferring their DAW and other tools. So you see how the world has changed. It's more affordable to use things in a customizable and more modular fashion (meaning you waste less of your money on features YOU might not want in a giant device). The workstation concept has become redundant. Because in truth, to give a great keybed. Great interface/hands on control. Great filters. Great build.... you get the idea. All in one unit. Will end up costing people 5 grand+. That will make many people, even stage artists think twice. Why? Because although they can afford; there is still the issue of weight. And much more. It's simply easier to carry a controller board, with laptop and supporting software. It used to be that people were too scared to rely on computers in a live scenario. Slowly IPAD became more common. A long with laptops for better poly/sample etc. In time there will be no need for workstations. I know. It's sad and I like them too. But the cost vs redundancy is much too prohibitive. You will see more devices such as MPC and FANTOM. Where the board becomes a 'hub' for all your other hard/soft ware. Thats simply a easier to update and more profitable platform.
