Every time I see the asking price for a Jupiter-8, I know it's just too much for a synth. But every time I hear one, I can understand why some people are still prepared to pay that amount of money. Wonderful sounds, Espen.

I'll replace the display, but I have _quite_ a few repairs and updates to do: PSU of a TX802, probably the display of a Proteus 2000, high voltage on the headphones socket of a Morpheus, soldered ROM chip that needs to be socketed in an ESQm, and a Böhn Dynamic 12/24 that makes no sound.

In all honesty you may not be quite as enamoured with it as you think you might be. They are hyped to an almost biblical status. Remember that in the day, they were thought to be bettered by the MKS80 and at that time many folks upgraded their JP8 to an MKS. For me, the Oberheims are more musical to my ears and richer in sound. JP8 was designed to be more neutral sounding and it really is. A bit like listening to a tube based amp (Obies) versus solid state (Roland). Both great but depends on your flavor preference. If you really must have THAT Roland sound, you can get it in a Juno 6/60 albeit a single oscillator, or seek out an MKS.

@@Hoophey I totally agree. I was shopping for a Jupe 6 or 8 around 16 years ago. My usual used synth shop fortunately had both. I remember the Jup 6 literally made me think, “is this it”? Naturally I’m hoping the 8 sets me straight and I’ll walk home with a new synth (you know the feeling!). I switched to the 8 and was MUCH less impressed! It has a super duper generic tone for one thing. Maybe I was spoiled because I had a Viyetra 8 and a Memorymoog before I tried these? So I wound up buying a Prophet 5. 🤷🏼♂️ The 5 doesn’t exactly sound incredibly exotic but it was no where nearly as thin sounding as a Jup 8. Also more organic, definitely. It took me like 2 weeks to get over my Jupiter PTSD! I could not fathom how such a celebrated synth could sound so very boring. My EDP Wasp has a certain tone fingerprint and would eat the Jup for brekky. Not taking sides. I desperately wanted to buy it going in there but alas, my hearing was too good! Sorry guys. 😮

I love my JP-6, but it is definitely more “thin and tinny” than the JP-8. I certainly can’t afford a Jupiter-8, but in the time I’ve spent with one I usually find myself dialing in the HPF to reduce its girth.

Jupiter 8 is a nice synth but I rather take a Jupiter x and throw in some other nice ones like the 3rd wave, obx8, Prophet 10 and Moog one than a 40 year old synth that will probably cost more than a Waldorf M, an oberheim TEO 5, a moog matriarch and a sequential pro 3 in repairs, ☺️. The price of a Jup-8 is of course ridiculous, but so is the price of a OB-X8. If I'm going to buy a hardware flagship analog polysynth today I sure want it to be analog all the way, which the OB-X8 most certainly isn't. It's much more of a glorified VST in a box than many people are aware of. It's software controlled in almost all aspects apart from the internal oscillators themselves and the filter. 5K+ for that? Forget it. Total scam. That doesn't mean in can't sound good, but so can a VST.
