When using more than one boutique synth the question come fast: Which mixer is the best for using with the Roland Boutique series.
Some think the MX-1 is the ultimate Boutique Mixer. In this video I show what the mx-1 can do.

USB power injectors are about $20 on Amazon. That will solve your Boutique needs. For the digital channel, another $22 will get you an adaptor that converts to stereo rca jacks. The MX1 is awesome, but it's like the Macbook - you need to think DONGLES.

The MX-1 is limited for Boutique use but a good start for ideas on an "MX-2". I don't really need EFX processor on the mixer but they're nice to have for live sets, Channel mute is great. An onboard sampler and maybe VT-3 would be cool. Update capability. I would definitely like to see 10 to 12-Input channels(individual) of Bus USB to feed Power and send MIDI and Audio to DAW, with 4-Input channels(individual) of RCA stereo/mono (or 1/4" if there is internal space), with MIDI In/Out...Tempo Adjust, maybe a Send/Return for external efx, maybe one Mic Input, Bluetooth connection is trendy for certain devices, Headphone mix area, Audio mix out, USB to PC and/or Interface(firewire). Nice knobs/faders and detail...Not overly lit up like many products these days (purple is cooler than green). Not over-priced would be awesome.

What you are really asking is for Roland to consider the Boutique Module as a "live," tool. I think that's more or less out of the question since the Aira is set up as their live toolset for performance use. Personally, I would love a mixer for the boutique devices, but knowing Roland's business model... (would not expect any such device, soon.)

Your are right... a Boutique mixer, with a built in sequencer/clock, would be so great! It would be the anchor/core product for all of the Boutiques. It would renew/enhance interest in the product line. A Volca Mix type product would be a good start. A better version would be something that mixed/synced/powered 6 Boutiques! Without such a product I am hesitant to buy more Boutiques.

My MX-1 came in the mail today but I had to go to work. It's killing me knowing this thing is just a couple of miles away, just begging to be played. Lol. Anyway, always great content on your channel. Very informative. My only gripe is that I get distracted by the action figures and stuff in the background. 😁 Keep up the great work, sir... And thanks for sharing great videos on this gear.

I have, Roland SE-02, JU-06a and TR8s, Thanks to this youtube video I understand that this combination actually works with MX-1 USB ports (lucky for me). I have tried to use a USB-HUB 3.0 for MIDI signals but the syncronizarion where way to much in non sync so I had to go with real MIDI cables through my Audio interface instead, also Windows and Cubase will not connect to more than one audio interface so all audio goes Analogue, result in fact is that I cannot use any of the new technics with USB and all goes classic MIDI and Audio. Mabye this Roland MX-1 is the solution for this, and still some other synths also can be connected. Thank you!! your information is very useful, it is not said so much regarding regarding Butiques and MX-1 on Internet and Roland homepage indicates compatibility but it was not 100% clear.

Just to add to clarify… the Mx-1 USB audio and MIDI will only work with Roland hardware. USB MIDI and audio is not yet standardized. It might be with MIDI 2.0. It would be great if Roland adds a firmware update that would bring universal USB MIDI to the MX1. Then again, it would only support new devices (or devices that for firmware updated to support MIDI 2.0. We will see.

@@Nu-trix Again thank you, I have now bought the MX-1 and it works really great with Cubase! Better that I could imagine, especially adresses easy audio channels both incoming to Cubase and outgoing. Yes, as you say limitations regarding the USB Midi but since I have several Roland products it works for me. What I miss is a built in Reverb, will buy external one and use the AUX bus for this. Also it could have at least one XLR michrophone input, but since I am not a singer personally I can live without that. Also the Master FX changes is not controllable/recordable thrugh MIDI, but you still can record Master FX bus ON/OFF for every separate sound channel and this is enugh for most cases. I am very satisfied with the MZ-1

Hi Nu-Trix. Great vids by the way. Hoping you can help me. I was thinking of getting a MX-1 to use its spdif output into my U.A Apollo 8 spdif input. Would this work ? The routing would be input 1&2 XV-5050, input 3&4 Nord Drum 3, input 5&6 Se-02, usb 1 Tr-8s and usb 3 D-05 (for bus power). Also use the aux's for a Korg quad pad. Appreciate all your work here on YT. :-)

Hello, Nu-Trix! In this setup(when tr-8 connect to mx-1 aira link) do you have any option for multitracks recordings like when you choose tr-8 like audiointerface.
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix Жыл бұрын
Each of the MX-1 inputs appear as a separate usb audio input in your computer. It means that if the TR-8 is connected using Aira usb to the MX-1 it will be only using the TR8 main out and will appear in stereo only in the Mx-1. You would need to output some internal tr8 sounds to external output and connect the cable to MX-1 audio inputs.

@Iofflight78

@@Nu-trix Actually I think he's asking about the battery vs usb issue on devices. If you have batteries and the usb connected it will power on for a second and then turn off. Because those usb ports don't supply power via the usb it kills the device. You have to boot the device while pressing patch 1 to bypass the USB as the default power.
@Iofflight78
@Iofflight78 4 жыл бұрын
I hope you figured this out but if anyone else has the question you need to power on the device while pressing patch 1 to disable the USB Power.

Hi Nu-Trix, I'm getting some hardware gear and can't work out whether the MX1 is the right purchase to act as a studio mixer for production to plug a poly synth (not Roland), mono synth (not Roland) and TR8s into. Is this a bad idea and should I be looking at a dedicated studio mixer instead? I'm a bit of a noob at this so your advice would be awesome! Thank you!
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 4 жыл бұрын
If you are looking for a mixer that is also part of the performance the Mx-1 is one of the only contender. The fx are time based and can be saved in scenes. If you are looking for a mixer that is also a multiple input audio interface the Mx-1 is a good choice. But if you are just looking for a mixer that can receive about anything (like a microphone for exemple) then it is not the best choice. If you are thinking of using the multiple analog outs of the TR8s and 2 others synths, you might be pushing the MX-1 to its max. It actually does not have a l’îlot of analog inputs. Hope this helps.

Good review. One question: can i put the tr8s on the usb 3 and the se02 on the usb 1? Because the se02 is not usb powered, it is seperate powered.
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 4 жыл бұрын
If I remember well the SE-02 needs a separate power supply because of it real analog electricity needs. I never tried the TR-8s in the usb3 because the TR-8 could not work running on USB power. I always understood the same fro the TR-8s. Now I have the SH-01a in USB 3 and the TR-8s in USB 1 just for audio and MIDI.

Hi there great video as always. I was wondering when you bring in a Roland AIRA device via USB like an MC101 or something does it split out the tracks onto separate mix of channels? Or does it just keep it on one channel. These devices go really well into Ableton live where they get split out and it would be pretty cool if they got split out in this mixer as well. Keep up the good work thanks.

A dedicated mixer that audio engineers use. One that has several XLR/TS mono inputs with inserts and simple compression; a handful of stereo inputs; EQ panning solo and mute per channel; 1 or 2 subgroups; 3 or 4 aux sends with stereo returns; 1 or 2 monitoring channels. Until my own personal mixer quest is complete I just use a couple of $30 4 stereo or 8 mono channel mixers that only provide primitive volume and panning.
