I've had my SE-02 since Oct. '18, and the SE ExtBox for it since Dec '19 (HIGHLY recommended add on despite the price if you love the SE-02, though it was only $119 or so, then). Have purchased the VST editor (only standalone works for me, not the VST), the SE ABCs presets are excellent at showing off the bass side of the synth, but I've also purchased over the yerars the 3 huge banks from Ultimate Patches, the ones from RAP, and also from Alba Ecstasy. And have made plenty of my own, exploring how good it can sound for Oberheim or Roland pads. If you do get the ExtBox and don't have things on a rack, the SE-02 ExtBox Lux wood cabinet from Mixingtable looks insanely amazing. The best overall online YT learning for the SE-02 (to me) is the series by Constantine Music, and perhaps the most amazing all SE-02 track is Dark Moon by Mike Pensini. Enjoy! It's an amazing synth for the money. Nothing else comes close, overall. (Also, I see your OB-6! Another great synth, and also one I have... I rounded out my hardware synths with a Digitone and, most recently, an LXR-02... I use lots of software, too)

Looks like the ext box is not available anymore, can i ask one question. The ext box seems to take the stereo output from the Se-02 but looks like a mono out on the ext box, why not stereo? Or am i missing something obvious. Thanks

Roland SE-02 has been flying under the radar maybe due to it's size and links to the boutique range but the synth is a killa for funk bass and gives Moog a run for their money at a fraction of the price. The sequencer also does some cool stuff that others don't. It pairs really nicely with the A-pro series of key controllers as I prefer the Roland pitch stick and the keys on those controllers are so easy to play and the price is cheap really.

Yep, very powerful synth, sounds incredible. Studio Electronics always brings the goodness.

I'm trying to decide between the SE-02 & the Model D. I am looking for deep smooth base and both fit the bill and the SE-02 includes Presets & a sequencer. I am concerned with the SE-02 small knobs otherwise I would get it instead of the Model D. Also the SE-02 being from the Boutique line of Roland synths, does it work with the Roland MX-1 mixer's dedicated USB input for AIRA products.
@SoundsAndGear Жыл бұрын
Haven't used the MX-1 but I will say the sound of the SE-02 is spot on, having presets is definitely a plus. Yes, I wish it was a tab bit bigger knob wise but I enjoy it. Which Model D are you looking at? If you mean an actual Model D then keys vs no keys is a choice and obviously the size. If you mean the Behringer then it sounds a great as well, no presets, and overall I think the SE-02 has more features, including FX. Tough decision, I honestly have both LOL.

This is the only boutique synth that I would be interested in owning. No other boutique synth even comes close. The sound is just superphat. It‘s the SE-dna that makes it interesting to me. An alternative to me are the dreadbox synths. I have the Typhon. Great little synth!

Yeah, I love it! I've also considered a couple of dreadbox synths, I have two of their modular oscillators that sound great!

I bought the patches after watching this but I can't get them in the synth, I get the drive showing up on my desktop and I copy the folder PATCH, but the patches aint there in USER path. Also when I mount the drive again to my desktop the patches are gone.

Hi thanks for this great video. I'm trying to decide between the Roland SE 0 or the Behringer Model D but can't decide. I heard the SE 02's Cutoff have 'stepping issues'. Have you experienced this issue?
@SoundsAndGear Жыл бұрын
I haven't experienced it, but I know they made an external expander device that fixes that issue. I'm not someone that is constantly sweeping the filter manually. I usually dial it in where I want it or modulate it with an LFO, etc.

Great review! I have it for two years, have the app and most available 3d-party libraries, but always thought it is harder to load presets using the app - a lot harder than on Deepmind for example, as you can't move a single patch from the synth to a file on the computer and vice versa. Been using mostly Diva, G-Force Minimonsta 2, and have other Minimoog VSTs, but man, now that I heard again the sound of this, it is fat and low! I will pay more attention to it again and will try to save patches with DAW projects, that would make life easier, if possible. And the idea to multi-sample it, to play it polyphonic is great! There is a great Vangelis patch for example in Ultimate Patches, which multi-sampled will give it a new life.

How do you like it compares to the bass station II and do you think that’s a fair comparison? Pretty much narrowed it down to those two for my first hardware synth after messing around with virtual ones and getting a basic understanding. Really like the classic moog funk bass sound which both seem to be capable of from what I’ve seen.
@SoundsAndGear2 жыл бұрын
Bass Station II is great as well, I think the SE02 has a little bit more of a vintage/moog sound, where Bass Station has it's own analog vibe. Can't go wrong with either imo.

Hello and new subscriber here. I am a 60 year old man who decided late in life to start a new career in electronic music production. I have been a guitarist for 46 years so I have a good feel for music and understand MIDI and use Ableton as my DAW. I own a MOOG Sub 37 I purchased 7 years ago to learn keys not realizing it is a great instrument for electronic music. I just bought a few Roland boutique pedals as I love the sound and small footprint and getting one of those racks that hold 4 boutique instruments. I ordered the TB-03 & Sh-01a and really dig the SE-02 sound. Do you think the Sub 37 and SE-02 would sound good playing together even though they are similar type sounding synths? I was thinking about the JX-08. Just wondering your thoughts. Also any other gear you can recommend that you personally are using in you studio these days. Thanks again for such a dope channel.
@SoundsAndGear Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Best advice is to try out what you can and find what you like. SE-02 with Sub37 is nice, similar, but not the same so you could do some cool stuff. JX-08 would give you a different sound, the other two also provide different character. The fun part is exploring different instruments and seeing which ones you enjoy. Have fun!

How would the Mother 32 compare? I have a Mother, but someone wants to trade me a SE-02 with boutique keyboard. I am tempted.
@SoundsAndGear Жыл бұрын
Mother32 is nice, what I like about the SE02 is that it has that classic Moog sound but also fx and presets. The knobs are much smaller than the M32 though so keep that in mind.
