Cool trick I read on a forum: generate a random pattern by pressing Clear + Start/Stop. If you like the rhythm in the random pattern but not the notes, set it to Pitch mode, and tap in only the pitches you want to kind of force it into a scale. If you like the notes it generated, but not the rhythm, set it to Time Mode and give it the timing you want. This is a great way to get a lot of patterns really quickly while not ending up with useless random mush. It's also something that's only possible if time and pitch are separate :)

Unless you have replaced all the capacitors and transitors in the original which are almost 40 years old, out of spec and probably leaking, it will never sound the same as the newer clones. This is were everyone gets it wrong with comparisons saying it doesn't sound quite like the original. Even 2 original 303's won't sound exactly the same. And after all your eq carving and brickwall decimation in todays dreadful audio mastering processes the original is not even gonna sound like the original. This is an excellent comparison! I've been right on the edge of buying a real 303 so many times over the years, but I always ended up deciding that I couldn't justify spending that much money for one specific sound when I could get so close to it with my other synths. Not having access to that exact sound always haunted me though, and I was surprised when Behringer came out with such an accurate clone. I'm not surprised they made one, but it's so good! One of my favorite things about the original 303 is how it sounds when it bubbles beneath a very low and restrained filter cutoff, but my TD-3 was a little too bright and didn't go all the way there until I adjusted the internal filter cutoff trimpot. Now it's absolutely perfect IMHO YMMV

Been an owner of a TB-303 for around 20 years now and a TD-3 owner for a month. Haven't had my hands on my real 303 in quite a while because it's sent out for repairs and modification, but from what I heard on my TD-3 and in your comparison video, it was a no-brainer to pre-order the TD-3 after the presentation. It's getting closer than any other synth and softsynth I tried. If Robin really starts doing Devil Fish modifications for the TD-3, I might go for another one and get that one modified as well (if I can afford another Devil Fish until then). Thanks for taking the time to do the video and have a merry christmas and a happy new year.

I've had the TD-3 for a week or two, and have to say that I quite enjoy the archaic, original-style sequencer. Sure, it's insane, but A) it adds a fun challenge, B) because of the fact that it's so difficult to control, it opens the door wide open to happy accidents, C) most of the time the patterns end up more interesting then if there were a straight-forward sequencing method, and D) I get to feel a sense of comradery with our acid forefathers who prevailed in creating magic with the same sequencer

Thanks for the excellent video! I noticed the bottom end on the behringer still sounds quite hefty as you increase the resonance, whereas the original 303 loses some weight and sounds more thin. If my ears aren’t deceiving me, that’s a big selling point and I’m that much closer to buying one.

Thank you! I've been waiting from day 1 for someone to do a side by side with a 303 that was more of a screamer. Further proof of what I was saying since day 1, that really Behringer nailed the sound, they just set that VCF offset trimpot a bit high. I've been saying if you put it next to a screamer 303, you might find it matches, or that the 303 even ends up being brighter. Here you've demonstrated that. You mention having another darker 303. If you get that one fixed, you should record the same sequence and knob adjustments 4x: once on the screamer 303, once on this TD-3, once on the darker 303, and then once on this TD-3 but with the trimpot adjusted darker. Post it on an audio forum thread about the TD-3, but don't tell anyone which is which. Watch as everyone claims the two darker ones are the two 303s. 😂

So true, exactly my impression. Almost too good of a clone, I would easily have forgiven them for not cloning the sequencer so well. And the genuine plasticky feel... tolerable but I wouldn't have insisted on it either. Then again, it likely contributes to the amazingly low price. Honestly, can't really fault Behringer for it, we asked for a clone and that is what we got. Plus the almost mandatory distortion unit, a cleaner signal and full MIDI/USB controllability of sequencing parameters (not knobs though, which would required motorized dials for its pot based voltage control).
@SiliconPrairie4 жыл бұрын
I must say, I prefer the original sequencer. People say it's hard to learn, but I was shocked by how easy it was after only an hour or two of toying with it. I love the original layout, and I find it much easier to be creative on the little crusty button pad/pitch mode modifiers than a normal synth sequencer.
@Riktenstein4 жыл бұрын
The problem for me is my 303 has the quicksilver cpu mod. This means you can sequence your pattern with the sequencer running. It's almost impossible to go back after using that.

If you can honestly hear those ever so slight differences... God bless you! I can't. Even if you were to be correct, in mix down or in mastering, you can fix those slight differences. That's really knit-picking. To me, both sounded just about dead even!
@KnzoVortex3 жыл бұрын
@@dez1989 listen to how the resonance sings a little longer and more dynamically on the original, I think that's what he's referring to. The resonance spikes are just a little more louder and swell up and down more in volume than the resonance of the TD-3, which kind of feels like it reaches a volume max on it's resonance spikes. See if you can hear it ^^ This isn't even to say that one is better than the other, but it's more of a "personality of the synth" thing. And it's also something you'd be hard pressed to fix during the mixing stages (getting one synths resonance to sing/move more dynamically in the same way as the 303) You could theoretically make the 303 sound like the TB-3 with some multiband compression or something of the like, but it also probably wouldnt really be the same, nor would it be too practical. It's just something to hear and think about, for the most part.

I got lucky, one week before christmas thomann received a batch of blue and red TD-3's and I ordered it right then and received it a week later. Kinda sad for all of those who preordered quite a while ago ahah. I did pay a premium of 260CAD instead of 260 because of the costly thomann shipping.

I'm pretty new to these machines. So the only difference is the sequencer? What's so bad about the behringer td-3 sequencer? Is it better to buy a tb303 for that sequencer?
@AdamTheAd-vanc3d5 жыл бұрын
The real significant difference here is the age. Once all the td's burn in and mature in years to come I'm guessing the sound characteristics will shift a little peice. One you've laid down your B-line a trick will it be worth the scrutiny. No !. Fantatastic demo both great little synths .

@@Riktenstein I have the Avalon Bassline, the Behringer TD-3, and the Roland TB-03. The Avalon is easily and by far the best, in everything but price. It is better than the TB-303 as it is closer to a Devilfish modded 303. (I would never bother with an original at this point, even NOT considering the absurd price). If you have not checked it out yet, Behringer has made the TD-3-MO, which can do a lot of what the Avalon (and Devilfish) can do- in particular the sub-oscillator, and it is even more unbeatable for the price than the original TD-3. (It retails for about $200- which considering all of what it can do, I think it the better deal for the money). I plan on picking one up soon, but FOUR 303 clones?! THREE is fine, but four is getting crazy. 😆

I would like to hear a comparison between the original TB-303 and the TD-3 for the "pow" sound - Square wave, low cutoff, no env mod, no decay, and full resonance and full accent, for a short note. I have only heard this sound in one review, and then the TD-3 couldn't replicate the sound. In my opinion this is THE coolest sound available from the original. I just love it.

i thought i never buy a real 303 because i'm not rich. i bought a td-3 silver, & i even bought 1 yellow td-3 from behringer, unfortunately i wasn't happy with the sound. For example, i love acid techno from the 90's with overdrive effect, and i plugged a Boss Sd-1, which is one of the iconic pedal for this style. (The distortion on the td-3 is great, it is like Boss Sd-1.)I never found the sound that i was looking for, i was suprised and disappointed, especially the behaviours of filters /reso / env mod / decay which don't have the same "richness" like the 303 sound i heard on records. Finally, after some years and thanks to behringer, my motivation was so strong that i managed to save money to buy a real tb303 and i'm very happy now, the behaviour of the sound is a bit different, with more "energy". Believe me the sound is not the same, it has more density on the real one & the knobs are more handy in fact. The real 303 with the Boss Sd-1 is pure joy now. The Td3 from Behringer is not a toy, but, for me, something is missing for sure, it's not an invention from my ears
