Initially I was going to buy a TD-01 but ended up with a TD-07 KVX. This as a beginner. But first I bought the KV. Then I upgraded bit by bit. Some parts of Ebay. I am not using the Bell Zone but the spare Crash instead. Financially all was slightly higher priced as a KVX. I also made a subscription for Melodics. I think it brings you to some grooves over time. But I did not know I need a MIDI Driver for audio over USB. But I do not need it since I am using EZ Drummer 3. Actually today I have finished the set with a VH-10. Now it is fully up to me to practice and learn some Grooves. But it is hard being over 60 but a lot of fun.

I swear you were reading my mind while watching this. I would think "Man, I wish he'd play it like so-and-so" and then you'd transition right into doing that. I also was tabbed-out looking at trying to find possible/the best upgrades and not a minute later you said you'd offer some upgrade suggestions. And of course, I'm 6'2" so getting insight from a taller person really helped as well. Excellent review video, worth a sub!

Great review, as usual! Always enjoy seeing your take on these things, and I agree on most of the downsides! The "mic type" thing - from what I've gathered, the first "Type" option is like a preset that changes all of the other mic parameters to a particular setup. So it'll select the "mic type", the width, level etc for that style of preset. The "mic type" option itself is the modelled style of microphone that affects the sort of EQ shape of the overheads. That's why you then get the little * next to the "Type" when you change the other settings, it tells you that you've edited it from the "stock" version. Took me a while to work out the difference and I wasn't 100% on it until I started using the TD-27 where it's much more obvious exactly what's happening due to the larger screen and extra options.

I feel like the td-17 kL is a much much better drum kit for 1000$ . No sample import/L-R outputs that’s nerfing the module for really no good reason at all. I would much rather rubber toms, better hihat foot controller, and a much better module for same price. The people who buy this kit are much better off saving 200$ more and getting the td-17kv and upgrading that with some better parts down the road. IMO...... I love Roland products, I just don’t understand some of the companies moves and motivations. Justin as always great video.

I'm not sure why Roland moved away from the RideX sounds, especially on these lower tier modules. My TD6V had that back in 2005. You could have the edge be a crash sound, and the bow having the X sounds allowed you to play the bow ride sounds, then you when you hit harder it played the bell sound. That was an excellent way to utilize 3 sounds on a 2 zone cymbal.

Hi Justin. I've been playing around 2 months. I bought the TD1-KV (with the mesh snare) to start me off. I'm just about to upgrade to the TD17 KVX. I can honestly say that the Hi-Hat pedal on the TD1-K is truly awful. It seems to have just worn out, and you need a lot of foot pressure to simulate the closed hats. I appreciate that it's an entry level model, but to put the same pedal on a $1000 kit (TD07KV) is going to disappoint a lot lot people. Keep up the good work. Craig (UK)

You didn't say how old the TDK-1 set is but FWIW the HH pedal has a rubber piece inside that gets hard and brittle as it ages, which causes problems like you're describing. You can find one on Amazon. Pretty inexpensive.

Thanks for the review. It's interesting how close all these kits are clumped up together. I looked at retailers in Sweden where I live, and just adding that extra crash + boom I'm already past the cost of a TD17KV. But then that kit doesn't have the proper ride cymbal, so if you upgrade that cymbal on the TD17KV I'm basically buying a worse KVX kit instead haha. I haven't played in years but I used to and my kids are getting older and showing interest in my past career as a drummer. But making the choice is really hard. the TD17KVX is way more expensive though when you factor in the hi-hat stand and the drum throne, and pedal if you don't already have any of those.

Honestly I have problems trusting a company that so blatently limits its software just to make you buy pricier stuff, there is no reason for drum modules to be so limited and there should be a direct correlation between the cost of the hardware and the final price, and this day and age bluetooth is a must, no matter the price. Remember that for the price of this kit we can buy an entry level mesh kit, a laptop and the drum software..

Sadly, that TD07 module hi hat sounds far better than the TD27 hi hat sounds (mated to the VH10). The TD27 hi hat in "open" position loses volume - not good - this on a brand new VAD506 set up. cant seem to fix it even with trigger sensitivity. My TD11 Hi hat sounds fare better as well - if anyone out there has had similiar issue and a fix, I'm all ears... Roland guys locally cant offer any solution.

You can't think of the model of that hi-hat pedal because I don't think it even has one! Regarding the bell on the ride I'm very surprised. Even the TD-1KV and TD-4KP do that. Not sure how, but yep if I hit that tiny little cymbal where a bell would be I would get a bell sound. Magic I guess!
@Durwood71
@Durwood71 3 жыл бұрын
The TD-1 uses CY-5 cymbal pads which are only dual zone, so the bell sound is triggered based on velocity. That is a strike to the bow area at one velocity will trigger the bow sound, and a harder strike will trigger the bell sound. It works, but it's annoying because it's too easy to trigger the wrong sound if you don't hit with just the right velocity.

Should I get this kit or go for TD-07DMK? DMK is a bit cheaper and I think its pretty feature-packed for its price, this is considerably more expensive and I struggle to see the value in upgrading :/
@anthonigrande
@anthonigrande Жыл бұрын
I assume the only difference between this and a TD1-DMK is just the slighly better module (I say slightly because I plan to primarily use it with plugins like EzDrummer and such) and CY8s instead of CY5s (which makes pretty much no sense since you dont have a triple zone cymbal for a bell so you'll have to buy apart later anyway) right? Was a bit bummed that this wasn't available over Europe but at the same time... guess better get the cheaper TD1-DMK, right? Also think you didn't mention: with bluetooth you can pair your phone to reproduce music to play along, but can you pair bluetooth headphones? Will these work if you using Ezdrummer (assuming you will only hear your Roland's module sounds)? As always, great in depth review!

Based on what I'm seeing, the TD-07 is only a slight upgrade from the TD-1. If you're already outgrowing the TD-1 after a year then I expect you would outgrow the TD-07 just as quickly. The TD-17 would be a much more significant upgrade not only in terms of sound quality but depth of features.

My general impression of Alesis based on everything I've read is that buying Alesis is risky. It seems they like to load up their modules with all kinds of bells and whistles to make you feel like you're getting a lot for your money while the overall quality of their pads and triggers is quite poor. Roland pads, on the other hand, are well made and will last for many years, but their modules are not as feature rich as Alesis, and some people don't care for the stock sounds. So in the end, I suppose it depends on what you really want. Speaking personally, I would never buy anything from Alesis just because I've read too many horror stories. If you want to save some money then buying a used Roland might be the way to go. A used TD-11KV will get you comparable pads to the TD-07 but with a better module for a few hundred dollars less, or if you stretch the budget a little, you can buy a new TD-17KV for only a few hundred dollars more than the TD-07 and get a significantly better module, and if you shop around, you might even be able to score a used TD-17KV for the same price as a new TD-07.

Its also my first electric so if I don't love this one ill go with Roland next and spend that extra money.

Hi, congratulations on your review. I wanted to know what you think of the Roland Td-07 KX offering a larger pad. I wanted to ask you if a pad can be inserted (instead of the ride) in the cable where you can add an additional plate. Sorry for my english...

Trying to decide between TD-07KX package that includes kick pedal and headphones or for $100 less the TD-17KV that also includes headphones. With the TD-07KX, it has additional crash cymbal, but single zone toms, whereas the TD-17KV has dual zone toms and more upgradeable, albeit older module, plus the ~$114 saved could go toward a Ludwig Speed Flyer Pedal. Is there any reason I should consider the TD-07KX?

Hey justin, do you plan on making a video on the new roland VAD 103? I'm dont know if I should buy the VAD 103 (has the 07kv module) or the td17 kvx.. I really love the acoustic design of the VAD103, but dont know if its worth it when compared to the td17kvx just because of the asthetics

My son has been learning Drums. He is getting good at them. I want to buy him a drum set but after watching the video, I'm still undecided whether to buy the TD-07KV, or the TD-17KVX-S V-Compact Series. Lets say money is not an issue, which one should I get for him? How important is the Bluetooth?

This is a weird module. In a way it's dumbed down but then the plethora of mike options, transient settings, I would expect those options on TD17, not a new lower tier module.

Thanks for the great review. Im pretty short and the tom positions look kind of high. Are they adjustable to make them lower or are they pretty much set to that height? Im trying to deside between this or tue Alesis Command. Thanks again!

Hi, great vids. Total nube here. What would you say about playing a kit of this level in a live setting? Any particular model recommendations for live use? I played a Artesia Legacy A250 and it seems nice but at full volume on the module it wasn't particularly loud through the headphones. Presume the venue's PA system will boost the signal from the module to give it more punch? What do you think in general?

Interested to know if the bass drum pad is a lot quieter than the 01DMK. I live in a bottom floor apartment so I’m lucky in that sense. i’m really thinking about purchasing this, bit of a shame that the module doesn’t have left and right out but seems like there can be a workaround.

Hello Justin. So I have a doubt. I thought the toms were double zone but the module doesn’t support it. Bummer. The thing that bugs me the most is that I bought a 3 zone cy13r so I could have 2 double zone crashes and a 3 zone ride. But it seems It can’t be done. Any ideas on how could I have 2 crashes and a 3 zone ride? Thanks.

@@patriciosalgado1632 i believe it CAN be done with smart use of splitters or whatnot. But I didn’t do it. But it’s ok. Three double zoned cymbals is pretty cool. I kinda miss the bell tho. Meh…

Man I had a Roland drum set like 9 years ago. Why do the sounds still sound exactly the same and cost more than 1000 dollars? I feel all the other companies made progress in sounds except roland. I remember Alesis used to be a joke but now I would prefer to get a 500 dollar Alesis than this.

As far as recording goes can I plug directly to my computer and record. I use audacity (don't judge me I have gotten some great recordings with that free program). I think these would be really fun and thinking about purchasing but want to know the ease or not of recording them. Thanks for the video and hopefully a response. And also I am thinking about the TD-07KVX

Dunno if you already figured this out but the td07 records audio over usb so you simply have to plug it in to your laptop/pc, download drivers, open audacity, hit record.

td07 no option to layer sound or import new sound. PDX6 pads are to small. Toms are only mono (1 channel). Cheap hihat pedal. You should not upgrade this kit, maybe just the ride. Roland should make a TD17KS, same module (with or without bluetooth), all pdx6/8 pads, cymbals and hihat the nice looking CY5 white edition, FD9 hihat controller, kick could be KD10 or the fixed pad that connect to you rack, or maybe an update of the KD7 :D. However, now you can still upgrade that kit to whatever you want.

You have to buy a kick pedal separately for this drum set, which is a shame and adds more $ onto the final cost.

Well, let me ask you a question if you don't mind. Which do you like better, these Roland's or the donner titan 70? Which kit do you think sounds better and has more features? Imma bout to invest but I don't know which would be the best for me. To me, these sound better than the donner, but I'd like your opinion.

@65Drums thank you very much for your opinion and information, but I just placed a order for a set of NUX DM-7X. I think that was the model. I know it had 7X in there somewhere. But out of all that I researched and listened to, those sounded the best to me. Actually, I thought their sound was phenomenal! What is your opinion about these drums? Do you like them? Do they hold up well over time as far as you know?
