It does the job. Music is made for the people and trust me, the ladies at the festival won't stop in their tracks and say, "wait, that drop was done on a TR-08 not a TR-808, this guy's beat sucks" Please. If you want to drop 3k to on a box the MAY work, then fine, otherwise, $300-400 to get pretty darn close is a steal.

This still isn't a fair comparison since those 808s are super old machines with 40 year old capacitors inside them. I bet this particular 808 doesn't even sound close to what it sounded like when it was new. And beside the caps, the analog stages back then were of poor components like TL072s that downgraded the sound coming from the OSCs even more... I think that the 08 sounds closer to what the designers of Roland wanted to create back then but didn't have the budget. Am I the only one who thinks that the sound of the old 808 sounds muffled, cheap and low-fi compared to the 08?

I still find it bizarre-that in 201x or whenever these things were released, current technology can't fully emulate what we were doing in 1985. I'm not sure if we 'can't' or if Roland is just saying "it's good enough for most people." Sad, both ways. The Boutiques would probably sound okay/good, if not for the direct comparisons. The older machines have a 'weight' that the newer ones don't. They _thump._
@bakerbakerbaker3052 жыл бұрын
it could be that the machine they were using as reference sounded that way is my thought, so when they’re compared to one in the wild they’ll still sound different, if you think about it how can such a small thing with a different build make the same sound it’s not logical, I actually think modern Roland doesn’t give a fuck and want money, their new instruments don’t really have the same charm old Roland is better except the new sp404 looks like they put some passion into it, I haven’t used the boutiques but they look like cash grabs, i have used old Roland instruments and they are so inviting to use

These aren't tuned the same to be an exact comparison imho. For Example the decay of the TR09 claps, tune of the TR09 hihats and tuning of the TR08 toms. One thing which is very noticable is the slightly different overal spectrum the old 909 has, my 909 had that same smooth sounding layer of softness but staying punchy. The TR09 still sounds better than my original 909 ever did (old serial number). Most people who comment here maybe don't know there are sometimes huge differences between original 808's and 909's.

I wonder how hard it would be for Roland to make true analog Boutique versions of both the TR-08 and -09. After all, whodathunk they'd have been able to squeeze a relative true analog Minimoog into a Boutique casing? Still, these don't sound too bad. True, they're not quite like the original, but let's face it, only those in the know are really gonna know the difference between a true 808 or 909 and one of these. It won't make any difference at the club, and if either of the Boutiques gets you on your feet there, well, then that's all that matters. Even I'm trying to find a reason to get one, and I was a fan of their digital drum boxes. The only thing I wonder about is if Roland isn't undercutting sales of the TR-8 with these two...

I'm the market for at TR-09 and look at it this way: a decent VST of a 909 costs about 100 euros and the TR-09 unit is about 260 at the moment. For $700, the TR-8S is a great option for up and comers and\or taking on the road. But no professional or audiophile would prefer it to either the TR-808 or TR-909 in the studio. As many have noted, the Kicks aren't as warm or round, and the snare\clap\hi-hats aren't as crisp. Where you really hear the difference though is when full patterns are played, the vintage machines have a natural sounding 'groove' that isn't recreated in the TR-8S. This is due to the vintage machines having real Analog Step Sequencers. When a pattern is played, the spacing of the notes isn't 100% accurate and microscopic inconsistencies occur that actually makes it sound + feel more organic. On top of that the sound sources themselves are Analog which introduces similar inconsistencies in the audio itself. Together this is why playing a pattern on either the TR-808 or TR-909 over and over again doesn't sound like a loop. But if you sampled a pattern directly from either machine, looping a measure of it would sound like a loop because its exactly the same every time. Likewise, the TR-8S has a digital sequencer that's perfectly quantized and plays back exactly the same every time... making it sound like a loop. Although the TR-909 has Midi, no professional sequences it that way, it sounds better to sequence internally and sync via Din Sync. The market never lies- the price of vintage Minimoog Model D's has dropped dramatically in the last two years because Moog's re-release of it is literally Exactly the same. On the other hand the price of vintage TR-808's and TR-909's have skyrocketed to around $4,000 each, this is because they simply sound and feel better. Roland has released multiple 808/909/303 emulators over the years and within a short period of time they sell for a fraction of the retail price on Ebay. I have zero faith Roland will ever release proper 100% analog drum machines in the future. Even if they tried, they'd find a way to screw it up by adding a digital controller + sequencer or whatever.

yes, of course, and the outputs have these two devices, because you can allocate the Midi channels, if that's not enough, could synonymous sequentially each sound (by solo function) except on a separate track, so the possibility is there. But even if you edit the stereo sum for good plugins, you will get even better sound.

i definitely have no time for soloing takes of drum tracks while recording, i have also put fortune to assembly massive multitracking system with high end preamps, fast ssd drives and super flexible routing systems. using two channel is a joke, it's mandatory for professional result to mix bass, snare, hihats and claps separately. this has been discussed many times and it's very unfortunate they blew it

Only the originals sound good, the Boutique are nasty toys.

Another video proving the 808 and 909 boutiques are quite lacking, especially the 808. The snare, hats, and clap sound terrible on the Boutique version. The kick on the 909 loses all its fullness on the Boutique version. Jesus Roland, just release analog ones already... or do you need Studio Electronics to do it right for ya.

They sound terrible digital is not the same as analogue. I was going to buy before I heard the comparisons on you tube. Saved myself $499

I might say these factors aside. As a person who is inclined to the 808 sound there is a lack of depth in the tr08 the comparison steered me away from purchasing. Good quality samples are much closer!

Oracle -001 Exactly! Even the TB-3 and TB-03 are quite lacking. Audiorealism ABL3 VST sounds much closer to the original 303. If I'm gonna have a digital sounding 808/909, I may as well use proper samples instead.

Oracle -001 half of the sounds in the 909 are digital samples.

Yea, if you didnt have them side to side you probably wouldnt notice how the new versions are sterile like everything else new.
