I had to make sure that DM did not steal my Virus Ti when I saw it on their stage. Listen to Peter play, shows everyone this is not your I, IV, V pop music band. Unbelievable musical arrangements through the years in obscure key arrangements with unique harmonies. Their progression from their early synth pop days is fascinating to see. I believe Alan Wilder was a major part of that. RIP Fletch. You were the glue that held Depeche Mode together.

Do the people on here crying about them using MIDI controllers not understand that they use whatever analog vintage gear they want in the studio and sample it for live use? Before this, they were doing the same exact approach with Emulator/EMax boards, and that includes the oh-so-precious Alan Wilder era.. Take any vintage synth you like on tour and see how long it lasts. See how hard it is to get a replacement when the one you brought out inevitably fails.
@davesteiman7 жыл бұрын
Can't see people crying about any of their shitty midi controllers. So, it has nothing to do with using analog or any vintage gear for live. It has to do with the NULL and DISASTROUS production on stage.
@gotchaman807 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. Whenever a Real Musician making money uses presets or a plastic keyboard, you get all the Non Money Making so called "Musicians" crying and complaining that they're phony because they aren't using Analogue Gear. These guys don't have time to screw around with cables and knobs, they have paying customers waiting to hear some music.

I see some "real musicians" complaining about the fact they are using midi controllers instead of analog gear in this new era. 1. You would not want to lug around analog gear constantly from gig to gig. It has been done but why do that when midi controllers can do all of that and more? It is heavy and lots of parts to look after and banging it around, which can happen, can be bad for old gear. New gear is in general not built as well, but due to increased portability it is less likely to be damaged and since most of it is digital, it tends to always offer perfect performance unless damaged badly. You want reliability, instead of the niche of having real analog synths, especially being a world class band. 2. Analog equipment needs constant maintenance, especially vintage gear which may be hard to find parts for in a bind. 3. You do not want your equipment malfunctioning in front of your paying fans, which analog has and can do. 4. You can argue that you can never replicate the warmth of true analog gear, which may be correct in a sense. But with signal processors and the ability to add the warmth through analog and tube audio gear which is modern, this is more of a non issue and I bet their modern sound would be cleaner (does not mean you will prefer it though) compared to old concerts. 5. They still sell plenty of tickets nowadays, if they sounded worse than they used to that fan base would dwindle yet people keep coming to hear them. This should be your clue that they are just modernized yet viable still and I am sure they still sound amazing live. Edit: Just saw some footage from 2017, yep, they still sound very similar to the old days! As expected, a bit cleaner but the synth sounds sound the same as they always have, analog and awesome sounding. Non-issue! They still have the classic Depeche Mode sound.

Rick Simon, next to the rd2000 there is a moog, and up to the rd might be an access virus VA....so it s not "just" a controller set up....Chick Corea used a kx7 keytar with his electric band in the late 80's....it's á controller, and no-one complains....so i don't understand those complaining "real musicians"
@grimlund5 жыл бұрын
Doesnt the analog vrs digital synths argument getting realy stupid. Vince Clark said in an interview that it was in the later years that he could determine the sound of an analog synth vrs digital synth. A blind test you now. And he knows quite a lot about synthmusic. I cant hear the difference. Its like Pepsi vrs Coca Cola you now. We did a blind test about cola sodas a couple of years ago. Pepsi, Jolt cola and stuff compared to Coca Cola. I allways said that Coca Cola is the best but neither one of us had a clue there. We could not determine a shit.
@levgtz81585 жыл бұрын
So, then you're suck up by that analog vs digital issue? funny. Can't you see a Moog over there? if they can have that Moog, they also can have a Prophet 12 and Evolver poly keyboard, which is the nearest sound to a PPG Wave they had used on older stuff. It's as easy as they prefer not taking any risks and avoid reprogram new modern synths with the patches needed for 200+ songs. It's so stupid to ask for analog synths for their "warm", If I ask for analog synths it's because improvisation opportunities are greater. Really do you think there is a studio unit that can take a cold sample and make it sound as a live analog sound? please publish that box name! everybody will get one! Btw, DM is my favorite band and I like their live shows a lot. But I'm not a teenager kissing the ass of some idol.

1. All these synth newbies acting like they’ve been in the analog game since the 70s or 80s. They don’t realize how silly they sound. Petty, jealous and pretentious. 2. Most of the stuff is going in the background they are just using the midi controllers but it makes sense they can`t bring every analog synth on stage with them city to city .
@rbrtck5 жыл бұрын
They actually considered doing so a few tours ago, but ultimately decided that it would be impractical and not worth the effort. Many of the synths are too delicate, some are quite large, and they didn't have spares handy. It's not implausible, as Erasure managed to pull off such a stunt during their _Chorus_ tour (also known as Phantasmagorical Entertainment or The Tank, the Swan, and the Balloon), but the numbers of synths were limited (whatever Vince could pack into his mobile "tank" vehicle along with the sequencers) and the songs all had to be rearranged in a more minimal manner, which probably works better with Erasure's music than DM's.

Virtual Era... When you've worked quite a lot with VST's, you know how far electronic music has gone... BUT, that's why I also try to play with real vintage synthesizers : it's all about sounds and feeling... :-) Anyway: I do like DM's work. Definitely my favorite group and electro sound... And, regarding to the amount of typical sounds they created, we have to admit virtual instruments are, by far, the best way to manage their concerts... Isn't it ? :-)
@rbrtck5 жыл бұрын
They have almost always used lots of different equipment to make their sounds, and for concerts they have mostly--even for most of the 1980s--played sampling keyboards in order to accurately reproduce the sounds. VSTs were mentioned in this video, but for all we know they could have been referring to virtual samplers running on computers.

I rather like the songs from the 80's and 90's. That's because i love synthesizersounds. DM's sound and style changed a lot over the last 20 years. Songs are often dark and synths are on the background or disapeared. In the 80's and 90's their music was more cheerful. So for fans of that era is a bit pitty they didn't continue with that style.

Diggin that Voyager XL and Virus TI2. Is the action any lighter on the RD2000 than the older RD700's? We have a RD-700gx and our actual Steinway M has a lighter action than it .. I ended up with tendonitus from trying to play Chopin Etudes on our RD-700gx .. the keys on it are also physically wider than the Steinway making it hard to hit large stretches cleanly. I suppose that's natural since they are near-40-year pros who still play to large crowds, but if you think about it, basic MIDI controllers are all they really need, aside from a stage piano, which they also have (the RD-2000). Like you said, "no matter." I never could figure out why they had all those Access Virus synths in some previous concerts (Peter still has one). What for? They're expensive and complicated. All the band need are MIDI controllers to trigger the virtual sampler (and maybe also virtual synths) in their computer. It's not like they're going to tweak the sounds in an improvised manner while they play--maybe some do that live, but not Depeche Mode. I wonder about those who play their $4000-6000 workstations on stage. Back in the 1980s DM brought expensive keyboards (their Emulators and Emaxes) on stage because they had to, but these days I don't think DM even own such things--not when they could use a DAW on a laptop (cheaper and even more powerful) instead.

The problem with these mid-summer stadium gigs is the curfew. In Prague the concert must be over by 10pm. Which means that more than half a concert you have a daylight on. The atmosphere in gone.

Fletch plays keyboards? When did clapping become a keyboard? I’ve been to 5 DM concerts, All with Alan and they were the best.

it is so easy today, i remember the days of the Emulator I and II, Jupiter 8 and DX7 1984.

I remember the days when DM didn't need cheerleaders for the audience, but that was back when Dave mostly sang his own live vocals, instead of expecting the audience to do it all for him. Oh, and Alan Wilder hadn't left yet. You couldn't pay me to attend a DM show now.

Coucou ! François-O. T.
