It's been said. Spinning rod's and reel's are making a big come back in Pro Tournament's. While I have used spinning combo's for years. Never even pick up a Baitcaster rod and reel till two years ago! Now my Baitcaster is my new go to rod and reel. But I never leave home without my Spinning gear. When the wind is up. I go to a 3/4 ounce Rattle trap. It does a great job. Now I dial up my baitcaster and do the same. Both have their ways to catching Big Bass. Please don't give up on Baitcaster's Practice, Practice and Practice some more. Shawn.

I didn't start using a baitcaster until I was about 35. It was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. Once I caught on how to use it effectively it became second nature. Man, the learning curve was tough!

Hey Westley! I am 60 years old. I didnt start using a bait caster till 2 years ago! My fishing buddy bought me a Quantum Pulse baitcaster reel. $38.00. He said if you don't learn how in a little while. I will buy the reel back off you. So I made a mistake of buy a Ugly stick spinning rod instead of a baitcaster rod. But I put that Pulse on it anyway. He had a killer bass pond behind his condo. He taught me how to adjust the baitcaster reel before we started. I still wanted to use my spinning rod and reel. But we walked back to the killer bass pond. I tried a couple of times trying to get the cast right and thumb the reel correctly. The spinner bait went over here and over there. But after casting a couple of times. It started to click. My buddy even let me back lash so he could show me how to get the back lash out. 2 years later. I still use the Spinning reel and rod for Spinner baits and Wacky rig's. But, I have caught more bass with the Baitcaster rod and reel. I even caught 43 bass in 1 hr and 15 minutes on Mother's Day. Last May. I wish I would have started using a baitcaster reel along time ago! I hold the Spinning rod and reel near to my heart. But the baitcaster is my new girl friend. Don't give up. You will get better and better. Shawn.

@@shawnbeck2303 I love my old Quantum Baitcaster! I just followed the package directions to set it up the right way. They said to tie on the lure, then disengage the reel, letting the lure drop easily but not too fast to the ground. Then try casting that setting. It was a little tough but it worked fine.

Roland, I put my thumb on the line after my lure almost comes to a stop. Keeping my thumb on spool is a great idea because like you said you can stop it any distance. I can see when pitching you really need to have the thumb on the spool to stop your lure right next to the log or any cover I'm fishing. Thanks for your awesome presentation Roland. 🎣🐟

My setup right now is a Shimano curado dc on a g.loomis E6X medium rod with 20 pound power pro V2 braid on it. I use it for pretty much everything I commonly use like worms with 1/8 ounce bullet weights to jigging and Ned rigs. In my opinion when it comes to bait casters you do get what you pay for. The versatility, range, and ease of use is greatly affected by the price you’re willing to spend on your setup. That doesn’t mean the better the setup you have the better the fisherman you are, as money can’t buy skill. But if you’re going to buy your first bait caster, the advice i would give is don’t cheap out on it. You don’t have to have the best reel and rod on the market but don’t buy the cheapest on the lot either. Do your research on what you’re buying to see what others say works for them, because more often than not it will work for you too. And if you’re debating on whether to buy a better rod or a better reel, go for the better rod. It’s always nice to be able to feel the bite sooner and it gives you a better sense of what your bait is doing in the water. There’s no point in being able to cast across the lake if you can’t feel when a fish bites. I’m no professional but I do consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable and experienced when it comes to fishing anything freshwater.

I've been using one for 25 years, when I started i used to take a rat L trap and remove the hooks and go down to a local park and practice. practice off the water so when you get on the water you are a pro. its easy to learn, there is just a a learning curve. Start with your internal brakes half on, half off, spool tension should be set so that the lure slowly falls to the ground when you release the spool. before you know it you will be casting as good as Bill Dance!!...oh wait..

I didn't know you suppose to tighten the spool so the lure doesn't drop on its own. I thought you suppose to tighten it so the spool doesn't rattle. Your method will definitely prevent backlash. I will use your method when I have to do frequent short casts.

I gave up on my casting reel as I was only manufacturing Easter Egg nests for the Easter bunny to lay eggs in. Now after watching this I am going to try to see if I can use the reel how it was intended. Best info on casting I have seen. Anyway do you have any experience on the big water lakes like Huron, Michigan, Erie, Ontario and Superior? Would like to see a show if and when you ever get up north. You can't do anything now because its too damned cold.

I started with 12 pound mono. Berkley smooth cast XT. Or the mono that can handle abrasion's well LT. But I went to Suffix 832 moss green. 30 pound braid. It holds up very well and casts beautiful. The Largemouth don't get away. Use a KVD 1.5 Sexy Shad in color square bill crank. I use Quantum baitcaster reel's only. The Pulse for $38.00 is 6 to 6 to 1 and The Quantum ACCURIST PT S3 7 to 1 ratio for $99.00 on Berkley Cherrywood HD medium heavy baitcaster rod's 6'6. This system is awesome. I found it is a Bang for your Buck set up. Just remember to adjust your reel every time you change lures and always. Turn your side dial up when cast ing into the wind. For back lashes put your thumb on the reel and pull the braid up until the back lash comes out. Hope this helps you out. It works great for me. Shawn.

1st point is to learn how to use a left hand bait caster . So many fish are lost casting with your right hand then putting it in your left hand and starting your retrieve . I fish with my friend that uses right hand reels and I always hear the cussing when a fish blows up on bait as soon as it hits the water and he misses it .

But if u get more accurate cast with a bait caster why do most pro's or youtuber fisherman use spinning for finesses or skipping bait under wood an stuff which takes accurate cast to do cause if u get ur finesses line in a snag ur screwed so u gotta make sure u cast in the right spots an I mainly see guys using spinning but hey I guess its everyone preference.
