I wrote this on another RM KZbin segment but I'll write it again here. My dad grew up in Arkansas and loved to bass fish. He spent a lot of time teaching my brother and me how to fish and hunt. His birthday is today and he would have been 98 but he passed in 2015. His all-time favorite lure was the Smithwick Devil's Horse "Ma-Scooter". He fished a lot on Caddo Lake in the mid-1950's with this lure so it's been around awhile! Seeing Roland Martin fish with this classic old topwater kindles some great memories. Thanks again Roland.

You know Roland has always had such a wonderfully exuberant attitude! He's still that excited teenaged boy scout when fishing, except with the wisdom and sage advice born of 60 plus years of bass fishing ! I do pray he keeps an sage eye on his fittness for many more years to come! This world is a better place for his being in it !

I just had my best ever top-water hit a few days ago on a torpedo. I play it over and over on my head. I've never seen a bass move so fast before - it surprised me. The moment my lures hit the water I saw that bass come up full speed at it from under the dock. It was epic. I ALMOST didn't throw it, but something said try it once. There's nothing like fishing

Nice bass Roland!!! Yep, more often than not, the really big bass just slurp down a surface bait with little eruption. My most recent 12 lb'er hit a small #90 Whopper Plopper like that. But sometimes, that little "slurp" is more of a distinctive deep "thoomp" sound that only a really big mouth cavity makes from sucking in so much water & slamming shut on the lure. Hard to notice the sound difference, unless the angler is really paying close attention.

@AmeriFanPicker4 жыл бұрын
My favorite topwater is a Keitech fat impact rigged on a VMC drop dead hook. You gotta play with the weight sizes for the particulate r size (mostly I use the 4.8oz on a 1/8oz but also the 5.8 on that same 1/8oz). You gotta hold your rod tip up just right to get the topwater action (and sometimes what I call "subsurface topwater where the tail just breaks the surface of the water)...Sometimes the bass just love that more subtle action. Plus you can drop it down and let it fall to the bottom...bring it up across weeds and mats...totally versatile.
