Deacon Roland Weiss, FSSP of Wigratzbad, Germany briefly explains parts of the sacred duty of the Subdeacon during the Solemn High Mass, providing insights on their biblical and historical origins. Not a single prayer or gesture of the Sacred Liturgy is unsubstaintial. The FSSP, also known as the Priestly Fraterity of Saint Peter or Priesterbruderschaft Sankt Petrus is a Clerical Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right for priests and seminarians in communion with the Holy See that offer the Holy Mass exclusively in what is now known as the Extraordinary Form of Roman Rite. The Solemn High Mass in this video was offered by Fr. Cassian Folsom, OSB in Herzogenrath, Germany on the occasion of the Liturgical Conference in Cologne. The two Pontifical High Masses also featured were offered by H.E. Archbishop Sample of the Diocese of Portland in Oregon in the former Rolduc Abbey in Kerkade, Netherlands, and Pontifical High Mass at the Faldstool offered by Archbishop Athanasius Schneider in Kiel, Germany with FSSP deacons, for which during all three Holy Masses, Deacon Roland Weiss, FSSP served as Subdeacon. 2SPetrvs was present to film all three Holy Masses!

This was so helpful. I went my first solemn Mass last night at an FSSP parish fir Candlemas. And I wondered what the subdeacon was doing during the Offatory with that humeral veil raised up to his face. How beautiful. Thank you.

if there is no subdeacon and deacon (especially subdeacon) for EF Mass, who is on change to chant epistle?

Only the Priest alone

A Solemn Mass (sometimes called High Mass in English) by definition requires a priest, deacon and subdeacon, plus acolytes. If the Celebrant is a bishop, there is also an assistant priest. If you don't have these resources, you can hold a sung Mass (Misa cantata) with priest, acolytes and choir, but you can't hold a solemn Mass. There is no concelebration in the Traditional Mass.

It’s either a priest at a sung (high) mass and low mass or a sub deacon for the epistle and a deacon for the gospel at the solemn high mass. It’s either the priest only or the priest, deacon, and sub deacon. Theres never just a priest and a deacon.

Take into consideration that ordained men can serve any one of the roles of a Solem Mass below theirs. Just like the deacon in this video served as a subdeacon in the Mass he talked about.

Thank you for explaining the difference between a deacon and sub deacon. I never knew the difference...KZbin sure is strange...they know from my content consumption that I am not just Roman Catholic but a traditional Catholic and they thought amusing to put the "consecration" of a female Bishop (sic) in some Anglican heretic church...Hey KZbin, why would you think I would be interested in such blasphemy? A priest and certainly a bishop must be a man because the Church is the bride of Christ and the priest / bishop lends his voice to Jesus and consecrates the host into the literal body and blood of Christ..so what they're saying is they are fine with a lesbian relationship with the church. H to the NO!
