Fresh from the Showcase here at SwissWatchExpo, what we're talking about this morning is the flush of creativity that's going on over at Rolex for the last 50 years or so, when it comes to certain dials on the Datejust line in particular. When you think about the Rolex line and you think about things like the Submariner, there's really not a lot of dial choice. You can certainly get a Hulk, you can get a Kermit, but mostly they're black. On the GMT Master, there are different bezels, but there's mostly one dial on a lot of the watches. The thing about the Explorer 1, you have one dial choice. But where you get this flush of creativity where Rolex really just lets the flood gates open when it comes to dial design is in the Datejust line. The Datejust is a classic watch.
It came out in 1945. It's the longest running reference in the Rolex collection. But there have been changes over the years of the case, the bezels, the bracelets, the overall aesthetic has stayed the same. This is a watch that is still the number one seller at Rolex. It might not get all the hype and the press like the Daytona or the Deep Sea or the GMT Master II, but they get the most sales. It is the iconic Rolex watch that a lot of people think of when they think of Rolex. Everybody should have a Datejust in your collection because it is not designed for a specific environment or lifestyle activity. The way a GMT Master is designed for travelers, or the Submariner designed for scuba divers, or the Daytona and designed for racing. This is a watch that is designed for everyday life, that you could wear it to anything and with anything.
It is the ultimate classic watch, it has great aesthetic, it has stood the test of time. Yet we have all these different dials that make it fresh and exciting. You can really personalize your Datejust this way, by choosing an unusual dial. We're just going to highlight a few of the unusual dials here this morning. Everybody, I'm sure has seen the Champagne Baton dial, that's probably the most iconic Datejust dial. But there are more and so many that changed the entire look of the watch just with a dial change. We will start here, with this one that is a White Roman dial, and people love how it's got a crisp, clean look. It really brightens up the watch and the Roman numerals, when they're applied like that, they're 18 carat White Gold hands. It's just really bright.
It has a fresh look. Next to it we have what's called a Buckley dial. This is named after a specific watch collector named John Buckley. I don't know how big you have to get in the watch collecting world to have a Rolex nicknamed for you. But he really was a proponent of these dials when they weren't really that popular at the time. The people in the various forums started calling them Buckley dials, and the name stuck. The difference between it when you look closely, instead of the way the white Roman one had the applied numerals on the Buckley dial, they're painted on. They're a thin font and it's a great look. They're really a different eye catching look, when you take a look at the Buckley dial. They're available in all different colors, I just happened to pick this one that was a champagne, so that it kind of retains that classic look.
The next one we have here is a Mother of Pearl. Mother of Pearl from Rolex, I'll tell you, is very expensive when you're buying a new watch, but here at SwissWatchExpo, it's a lot more affordable. The watches aren't as much more as they are ones with non-Mother Pearl dial. This one has diamonds. There are a lot of different Mother of Pearl designs, but that one's kind of the classic one. The next one we have is called the Jubilee dial. The Datejust actually, when it came out, it was celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of Rolex. They initially thought about calling the watch instead of Datejust calling it Jubilee. But they ended up calling the bracelet Jubilee that has the five sections of links and keeping the name of the watch Datejust. The reason it's called that, is because it was the first watch that had the date complication.

The one you've identified as sunburst is actually a sunbeam dial.

I sent my 16253 DJ in for servicing in 2014 and they replaced the dial with one that has small roman numerals at the end of each stick marker. Can you tell me what year this dial was introduced?
