In 2019 I took an unusual photo of a Daytona. I am assuming the original photo was from a magazine. My son sent it to me. It had a black dial with silver rimed sub dials. A red Daytona appeared above the bottom sub dial. The bezel was black. The strap was black. What was interesting about this watch was the multi colored lumed indecies. I have since never found this watch in photos on the internet or listed for sale. My son, who is now deceased, loved the look of the colored indices, so I purchased a nice Seiko chronograph and sent it out for it to be relumed in colors for him. Today my other son owns the watch and asked me if I had a photo of the Daytona. Luckily I still had it. I have to assume that was a Rolex Daytona prototype or someone had it customized, maybe by Rolex if they would do this. Do you have any information on such a watch?

It’s rather disappointing that you did not mention that the second track is wrong on the Daytona’s dial. The movement is beating at 28,800 vph, or 8 ticks per second. Yet second markers are divided by 5 slots instead of 4. So when you use the chronograph function, you actually can’t read precisely where the second hand stopped and tell what lapse of time... you timed. So long for having a precise chronograph. This watch surely is a great watch, but this little detail keeps the watch geek in me thinking Rolex did not design this watch to be a true chronograph but rather just a jewelry piece.

Timmy Wolfy This is really only relevant if you’re extremely OCD, since human beings have a reaction time of about 2/10 of a second, the difference You describe is meaningless in terms of actually recording time. Eating that the watch is plenty accurate for its intended purpose.
@timmywolfy60604 жыл бұрын
Itsalgud1 you don’t seem to understand. It’s not about being OCD, it’s about designing a chronograph dial that you CAN’T READ. It’s a total non-sense to print fifths of a second on your dial if your movement is beating at 4Hz. They just printed markers where the chronograph second hand will NEVER stop. Congrats.
@itsalgud14594 жыл бұрын

@@golfinguru11 maybe you should read up about the caliber 4130 before comparing it to other substandard chronographs with better finishing. Just my two cents
@golfinguru112 жыл бұрын
@@Cutekid69 you mean the Aegler-made (Rolex buys manufacturers, doesn’t make anything in house) movement that takes nearly all of its inspiration from the Zenith el primero? That one? @Cutekid692 жыл бұрын
@@golfinguru11 I think you got the 4030 mixed up with the 4130. The 4130 is a completely different architecture from the zenith 4030. The parts count have been reduced and the running seconds hand have shifted to six o’clock from 9 o’clock. I don’t see how the 4130 took any inspiration from zenith when a lot of other chronographs also feature the 3, 6 and 9 subdial configurations like the Moonwatch with the 3861/1861. It’s like saying the AP ROOs are inspired by Valjoux 7750s with their 12, 6 and 9 subdials. Lol. Better not copy and paste any more stuff you read on the internet. Makes you look more like an idiot

@@npcforyou What are you comparing it too when you consider it overpriced though? Find me another automatic chronograph, with as much pedigree, and from a brand as valued as Rolex that comes in at 40mm and 12.2mm thick for $15.5K CAD. You won't. The Daytona is often compared to the Speedmaster and sure, the Speedy is about 40% the price of a new Daytona. However, by all quantifiable measurements, i.e. technical watch specs, the Daytona is a better watch in every conceivable way. So I'm just curious as to what you're comparing the Daytona to when you say it's overpriced. If you're referring to the price on the secondary market, then yes I completely agree. I would choose to be patient and wait for it to come at an AD.
@michaelfleming84904 жыл бұрын
@@npcforyou “Fabricated” shortages is one of the most perpetuated myths in the watch collecting community. The reason there are shortages is because when the steel, sports watch popularity exploded about 6 or 7 years ago, Rolex chose not to ramp up production to meet the demand. Why? Because they are a not-for-profit company that is owned and operated by a family trust and charity called the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. Rolex is not publically traded which is why they are not obligated to release information on the operations and finances to the public. This is why they are shrouded in so much secrecy. But, this is also why they are not looking at profit margins and the bottom line. They have no shareholders to answer to and have no interest in profits. Rather Rolex’s primary focus is on building high quality watches and protecting the legacy and heritage of the company. The popularity increased but production did not. And THAT is, in fact, why there are these absurdly long waitlists at retailers. It’s not some grand conspiracy between Rolex and their authorized retailers. It’s simply a result of the business model Rolex operates within. Basic supply and demand. Nothing more, nothing less.

Certainly not haute horological except the Sky Dweller. But once you handle one and you put one on the wrist and it just feels “right”...you immediately get it. They are one of the most comfortable watches to wear, bulletproof/reliable, amazing quality and they simply make you feel good.

I think what does it for me is the combination of the bezel, dial, and color schema. The glide lock is great and there are a lot of aftermarket straps available. I look at a Vacheron overseas or most AP/PP models and see a basic ass watch...you can get $100 watches that look like them (not that there aren’t Rolex homages either). Everyone likes to bitch about Rolex but they are the gold standard. I’d be more interested to understand why people circle jerk over grand seikos

Man these Pagani design homages are getting crazy, If Rolex keeps it up they can be a big name one day
@Godotlv50004 жыл бұрын
Lol, Rolex actually released the smurf submariner (black dial, blue bezel), AFTER Pagani released PD-1661 with the same colours. Pagani's are also getting better and better, the sub 40mm, Daytona and Seamaster 007 are their current best homages for the value.

@@Godotlv5000 indeed pagani is getting better and better only thing against them is the lack of q.a but overall decent afforable timepieces.

The 4130 has clearly taken some "inspiration" from the FP1185 Chrono. No reason to not do so though, the 1185 is a thin, tough and well designed vertical clutch and column wheel chrono. The 4130 offers meaningful improvements on it and is a great, high performance movement.

I have the black dial version. Both colours are not as easy to read as the Omega Speedmaster. The Daytona wears too small. The dial could gain valuable space and the red writing could be more visible if the hands did not cross over beyond the fulcrum point.

Seiko is by far the number one watch brand in the world without being pretentious.They just work their magic quietly without having to create a persona of something there not. And that is to me the most appealing and most impactful stealth statement that any watch Company may strive to achieve. Even the Rolex crown needs to bow down to the Seiko halo, the watch God of all watches!

I can see why people like them so much its a lovely looking thing and its says so much about the individual wearing it yes they probably have a lot of patience being primary,I really like the steel and Gold version again really difficult to get hold of, I have been buying things to hopefully get me up the list but i am still waiting for the call from my AD after 7 years, I wont go Grey market so maybe one day hey

I own several Daytona's and have always been a fan, but the face of the watch (text in particular) is way too busy, take it down to two lines and it would change the whole face and look so much better, its like bloomberg telling you how rich he is...the old dials especially the paul newman dials are much cleaner. Compare this face to say the omega ck2998 which I also own and there is no comparison...i also own the panda daytona and I find it much easier to tell the time... compared the daytona to say their GMT or a Sub it is harder to read the time at a glance, especially the 116520 white dial with the silver inlays...but he fails to mention the most important thing about this watch, and that is it's versatility...you can wear a daytona with a Tux and you can wear it with jeans....it always looks good and is easy to wear...these video's should really be more about the experience of wearing and a little less about the hype train...

There’s a list to get on the list and once on the list, its 10 years minimum. I couldn’t get on the list to get on the list and I just bought an Oyster Perpetual for my wife! I have a Speedmaster already so just bought the white Seamaster. That’s close enough to the white Daytona and no hoops to jump through to get it. The two satisfy my favourite aspects of the Daytona for me just fine!

I was reading up on Omega speedmaster and decided to read up on Rolex Daytona for comparison and immediately I was blown away by how Daytona is such a beauty. The quality of this watch from its movement up to the exterior are simply out of the world. When I looked back on speedmaster, it looks mediocre to me. Speedmaster is a nice watch but no way it could take on Daytona. Daytona is just simply at the higher end on the ladder. I dare to say Daytona worth every penny spent.

As I've thought before, I really feel like a "week on the wrist" has kind of lost it's soul. Although it's important to recognize the history and physical aspects of the watch (case, dial, movement, etc.), my favorite part of the video was everything after 6:10. In the foreseeable future, I don't see myself trying on our owning a Daytona (vintage or modern). I'm much more interested in what it's like to wear it, getting Jack's personal opinion, how the watch wears, etc.
