Another great Monday session Tim! Regarding the Rolex "shortage", Rolex did ignore the "elephant in the room". While the AD's have no supply in their showroom cases, the gray market has a large supply of most models at premium prices. My take is the AD's have been selling unlimited quantities to their large customers, who buy whatever they want and flip it to the gray market at a profit. Us the watch collecting public is not expecting to get a rare watch like the Daytona, but I would love to buy a Pepsi or Batman to enjoy and keep (i.e. NOT flip). At a minimum, Rolex should increase the supply of the Oyster Perpetuals to make available to first time buyers. My solutions : A) I think if the AD's would only sell one model of Rolex to a client then more would be available for first time buyers. B) A second solution would be for Rolex to take orders directly over the Internet, and fulfill them through the AD's. This would insure that one large client cannot hoard all of the in demand models and flip them. Tim also nailed it by suggesting Rolex stop making the least popular models like the Yacht Masters and two tone Daytona models. I also fully agree that us watch collectors should stop buying Rolex and go for the other high quality brands. Collectively, this will force Rolex and its AD's to earn our loyalty again.

The Rolex situation is a perfect storm. In the era of the internet, there is never any thing as "sold out" - the product simply moves to the secondary channels at "market prices". The problem today is fake speculative market pricing (and this isn't limited to watches). If a vinyl record is unavailable through normal distribution channels, and there is more demand than supply, some flipper will list one on ebay or discogs for $1,000. Whether they ever actually sell at these prices or not, it's creating new frameworks for price expectations. Brands like Rolex who control their production choices, whether to invest or not in new production, or let the wild west of prices go crazy in the secondary market only benefit from the "scarcity drives demand" side of the equation. Since covid, bikes are in the same situation due to supply chain problems in a market with hot demand. These imbalances have spread all over the globe, and it's not going back.
@robcarrier19693 жыл бұрын

You would never know he works for a grey market dealer and every week he hawks a boatload of Rolex selling for 2-3 times retail while the Rolex AD which owns that very grey market dealer has empty display cases and years long wait list. Yet he comes across every time as surprised as Tarzan being laughed at when he walked into say a Philly Rolex AD and asked for a Sub and Daytona at discuount when he discusses the "crazy" fact that Rolex at selling on the grey market 2-3-4 times the retail price. Priceless.

That's what AP boutiques do too. What's wrong with that? Great as always. I'm going to gouge my eyes out if I see any more pics of Rolex. They produce 1 million pc's a year $ 14 k for a Submariner on eBay. They must be smoking crack. Singapore is nominally the 5th largest watch market in the world, yet all 3 major AD's here tell me they can only get very few watches, and the brand boutiques are empty. Yet the grey market is overflowing with 'New' pieces. So my question is where are the current production watches actually going? Seems to me there are only two possibilities: 1) Direct to China 2) Straight out the back door to the grey market. Can anyone really answer this question?

Going to a lottery allocation system would hurt Rolex as a brand because ADs would have no part in it. The big appeal of carrying Rolex to AD is the extra sales of less desirable stock they generate.
@killazx93 жыл бұрын
"PP increased the supply of the 5711 and it didn't help" - because it only benefits the people who has inside tracks and they hold even more inventory in their hands, selling them one by one with a price bump on each piece sold. PP cannot realistically make enough to satisfy the demand because most of these buyers are flippers. And then we have people who buy these as "investments". You only need one to wear but for investments, having 10 is not a crazy idea.

Greetings from Dubai Rolex’s statement confirms that they know of all the issues ADs causing but will not intervene to bring in transparency on how allocations are made. They make great watches but don’t give a damn of the customer experience. People need to wise up and not pay premiums of their watches.

The lottery thing & floating the price to the market would help, but there would be lottery ticket flipping and shenanigans. For example, they would call the average Joe to offer him a Cellini, while the big shot would get the opportunity to buy the Daytona.

@jumboJetPilot3 жыл бұрын
I’ve said the same thing about several brands for years now. They don’t have to increase production, they just need to do a better job of adjusting production to match what customers want. As for Rolex specifically, I think they could disband the entire Cellini collection and nobody would take notice. Think about how much they could then devote production assets towards their popular models if they did that!

The lottery you are thinking about could end up being a flippers dream. Buyers with no interest in horology and just looking to double or triple their money might toss their name into the hat. At least now JQ public need a relationship with an AD in most cases in order to get a desired model. I know my AD would be wondering why my Sub or GMT is never on my wrist. The winners of a lottery wouldn’t have anyone wondering if they were anonymous to any AD.
