I think many people who buy a Submariner buy it to show off. Everyone, even non-watch people, recognize it as a Rolex. And they know they are expensive. Car enthusiasts buy BMWs for their performance, but others buy them to show off that they have an expensive car.

Good review and thoughts. I do have the Ginault Ocean Rover II (blue bezel no date) and love it. Pics or videos are no match to seeing and holding the watch in person. It's a beautiful watch. A couple of months back I purchased Ginault Silent Service (no date) and can't wait to get it. I will eventually pick up a Rolex Submariner but just not that eager to get one as of yet. I own the Rolex, and I daily it, and enjoy the way it makes me feel. No one notices that its a Rolex, or particular cares, apart from the other friend who is into watches. Technically, luxury brands don't stack up. But that could be said of any luxury good.

I actually prefer the hands and design of the Ginault. The blue bezel is a plus as well. The Rolex has that brand power. Status symbol. No explanations needed. You don't get that with a "Ginault" but does that really matter? Up to you. Good video comparison.

Team Ginault, had several 6 digits subs ... But I don't like the crown image for multiple reasons ... Good watches but the brand I dislike... Ginault are very well made, and to me using the greatest hits of the many submariner generations... Comes out perfectly! Milsub hands, maxi dial, SD insert with min marks, 5 digits case etc... If Rolex would release the OR2 as a special model, it would be impossible to buy 😂

Team Ginault, just ordered one with cyclops and black bezel. I owned the 41mm sub date but sold it as didnt feel safe wearing it. Watch crime has rocketed in London.

It’s 17.7mm wide and 45.4mm long. I’m not sure what you mean by size of connection but the bracelet links are 15.5mm when connected to the clasp.

I've got one and a six digit sub as well. The Ginault is a really nice watch and I wear mine regularly. Without getting into the movement, however, keep in mind that Rolex designed the 5 digit case, the mil spec hands, the overall design. The Ginualt is a copy. Is there a difference between a Picasso and an artist that that copied his work, to a very high degree, combining various elements from his master works, into a beautiful painting? I like my Ginualt. I like my Rolex. But to say they are almost equal is a bit of a misnomer. Then consider the movement. There's a reason Rolex is many peoples grail watch. But if you want a homage, the Ginualt is top of the heap. Thanks for posting.

The rolex is superior in every conceivable way. The logo, the name, the text, the font, the way "swiss made" covers less space, the bezel doesn't have those extra dots/lines which makes Ginault look more busy, the white sub dials are not as bright, the circular sub dials look more proportionate to the bezel, the triangle on the bezel, the Mercedes hands are thinner and more elegant, the first link is shaped to match the lugs perfectly so light flows continuously and harmoniously, the clasp has the logo, and on top of all Ginault simply copied the Rolex. All that being said is Ginault better value for the money? absolutely. because the Rolex is only like 10% better in every criteria but the price is 8x. So of course you're getting better bang for your buck with the Ginault. I still think the Ginault is great, but there's no comparison with Rolex in my opinion.

I just bought an Ocean Rover 2.5 black no date from ebay for $1100 used. Excited :). Can't afford a rolex and even if I did probably wouldn't chuck up 12k for it

I think the homage comments on the genault are a bit over done. It's a modern version of various milspec subs. Rolex will never make this.

Yes, but such comments are often made by people who are deeply insecure about the subjective worth of their purchase, and grow very defensive about the intangible "heritage" of their preferred brand.

To each their own - watches are expensive and it’s alot about branding. That said - when a brand takes all of its design from another brand it’s not watch making in my opinion - it’s a type of cash grab just like Rolex is doing. It’s similar if you have ever worked on a group project in school , you do all the work but the group gets the same grade - ginualt didn’t put in the sacrifice years back they need to be their own brand with their own identity

A Rolex is as much an investment as it is anything else. I’d love to own one, but let’s get real. I’m not living in the Rolex tax bracket! Aesthetically, I prefer the Ginault. The sword hands are awesome and I prefer the case shape. Thanks for the comparison.

I like the blue bezel and wish Rolex still made that in the steel models. I’m sure they’ll bring it back, but then it will be five years before you can get one… Still, if you have your heart set on a submariner, nothing else will substitute. If you’re open to alternatives, though, I’d get something that wasn’t such a direct homage.

Ginault is not going to add their branding to the clasp for one reason: it’s a Rolex patented clasp. This is also why Ginault hides their clasp from view on their site.

@@bestboy897 Almost everything comes from the Rolex Submariner. It has a classic 5 digit 16610 pre-ceramic case. A handset from the Rolex Submariner 5517 milsub (British MOD Milsub mandated hands). Maxi markers from the ceramic subs. A submariner crown. A modern solid link oyster bracelet with a patented glidelock clasp (which is why Ginault hides the clasp on their site, and has no Ginault branding). Where it departs: the dark blue ceramic insert, the caseback, branding, the movement, and the red seconds hand. So, yes, it’s a mixture of submariner references. It is in fact an homage. Nonetheless, it’s a very nice, exceptional watch. Not for me tho.

Ginault has no R&D, no in-house rleiable movement, it copies Rolex design, poor quality materials compared to Rolex, and yet this YT assumes in his entry that you get almsot the same watch for a fraction of the price. If you can't afford Rolex, there are many great watches Omega, Longinees, Tudor ...etc with different price points

If I didn’t have the sub I would buy it , it’s more cool than rolex. Rolex is high quality? I have a 16610 5 years ago, I spent 8 months , went service Centre 3 times to have it fixed.
