Rolex has long been a safe bet for the watch collector. What can go wrong if you buy a popular model like a Rolex Submariner, Rolex GMT or even a Rolex Daytona? There are a few easy to make mistakes that can really hurt you. Learn from my example! Save yourself!!!

OMG!! Your so right about the submariner. I traded mine up to a skydweller black dial because it looked so shiny and new plus its the most complicated piece Rolex do. Then it hit home ,buyers remorse!!! Now I want my plain Jane sub back 😩

A couple of weeks ago I was offered a brand new Skydweller (oystersteel and yellow gold, gold dial) from my local AD, and seriously considered it, but that watch just doesn't grab me. A Yachtmaster? I'd have been all over it.

Unless you're buying from a collector or some place that has some kind of documentation, safe to assume any vintage Rolex you see for sale is a franken to some degree or another. The average pre-00s Rolex in a consignment shop, online or otherwise, has likely been there more than once in its life. Even if it hasn't, for an older Rolex to get there in the first place suggests an original owner who had no idea about OEM vs service parts and thought free polishing from the RSC was a sweet deal. It's easy to guess where the vintage examples you'd want actually are: on auction, still with their original owner, or with the original owner's kid

My father used to sell Rolex in his chemist shop in the day when they were nice tool watches. No one sent them to Rolex for servicing as every jewellery shop had a trained watchmaker. If a part needed repair and they didn’t have it on hand, they would make it or use what ever they had and modified it to fit.

I agree with your last suggestion. I rotate my watches on a monthly basis. So they always make me feel good to see them again. I do my best to dedicate the month to that watch and try hard not to play with the others until their turn comes around a few months later.

All good advice, if you are an investor in watches. If you are a watch enthusiast, and you no longer love the Rolex, then why hold onto it? Sell it and use that money for something else...maybe for a different watch you've had your eye on....just make sure you are really ready to move on. I'm not selling the ones I have cause I love the ones I have. If that ever changes, they will be gone. Not going to have that money tied up in a watch I'm not wearing...same rule that applies to the few other pricier watches I have. Of course, I bought the three Rolex I own at retail, so it's not like if I do sell them one day, I'll lose money...just might not make as much if I had sold it at peak. That's fine with me though. I'm not in this for the money, I just love watches.

Hi Marc, I really like your videos because you share your perspective instead of just stating the specs. Can you please do a video to discuss the popularity of Rolex and the hype that is causing an increase in watch robberies across the US, especially in California? I feel like many people work hard to own a Rolex but then realized how dangerous it is to wear them in public. The watch then just gets stored to keep safe. What are your thoughts about wearing luxury watch in public in the current climate? I know many people who owns a Rolex but won't wear them because of fear for their safety.

Started to recently watch Marks tupe, very good. Just bought my first Rolex from an AD at retail. A Submariner 41mm 2022 surprised i got offered after a 6 month wait. Maybe not as much cash about due to global state.

Putting a different strap on can help alleviate that boredom. It can also make it a little less conspicuous and maybe therefore safer from theft.

Mark was predicting panda to $100K this year. I’m seeing them into the 30s now. Looks like my detective work wasn’t so bad after all. Mark, what you’re failing to realize is that watches have never widely been viewed as an investment until recently and they had done nothing but go up. Rolex steel sport will always be as safe a purchase as there is in watches (at retail), but the party is ending man. Wake up.

I’ve taken a few Rolex’s into the Dallas service center and I always ask them to not polish and only replace the worms movement parts and crystal. Never had a problem.

Great channel Marc, long-time viewer. Question: you say “don’t buy vantage”, but our recent Rolexes will one day become vintage models: does that mean you would sell your new or recent models before they turn “vantage”? Used watch dealers often take 20% off the retail price, so in your example with a retail price of $17,000, a seller would get $13,600 (not $9,000 as mentioned in the video).

No Peter, i am a vintage Rolex collector and i can tell you that recent or modern Rolexes will never be vintage. Vintage is categorized not be age but by design, materials and historical evolution. The vintage game is for enthusiasts, not your common guy in the street. That is why his advice is not to.

I got my Rolex op 34 mm blue explorer dial. From Japan I know if I sell this watch I will regret it. This is the entry level Rolex that is not in high demand. I had my watchmaker do the pressure check and amplitude. It’s running well. 34 mm on my 8 inch wrist, I don’t care it’s my Rolex and I love it.

"Never sell Rolex." True. In the late 1980s I sold a gold Submariner with a Tiffany stamp for $6,000, the type with the nipple hour markers, probably '70s. It was a good price at the time. Needless to say I wish I had kept it.

A Rolex franken watch, is not nessesary made of parts that's not from Rolex. Theres a lot of Rolex submariners 16610 lb out there converted to Batman's or kermit's That will not be with the original Maxi dial, at a much higher price, than what it was. But you get a Frankenwatch. I actually have a confession to make to you Marc.... I'm not much into confessing, but here it goes. For 3-4 years ago, i started to bump up my watch collection. And i was a Rolex Fanboy. I hated that you would make a Seiko, a better buy, than any Rolex. And i just keept on dreaming of owning a Rolex. I am of cours making a refference to your Grand Seiko videos. Last year i was at a visit, at my favorite Rolex AD, that sell a bunch of other watches too. i i was talking to the staff about watches. I had seen some Grand Seiko vid's of how they where produced, and what they where, but i was not really convinced. He found some GS's for me to try, and handle. Talking for almost 2 hours... OMG, it changed my mindset about watch quality. I was sweept off my feet. And i hope to be getting my first real Luxury watch this year, and i just skipped thinking about getting a Tudor, and just enter the Grand Seiko universe. I still like Rolex, but only for what it is, not like it's the holey grail. Grand Seiko isn't the holey grail for me, but the finish and the work put into them, im on. Thanks alot.

Bought a Black Date Submariner in 2018, sold it in 2020 to start my business. Later in 2020 I bought a BLNR as I got an opportunity to buy at retail. Now, 4yrs later i regret selling my Submariner and badly want another haha. You're absolutely right

Great video Marc, some very good points. I almost traded off a Rolex GMT and Speedy last year, but ended up keeping them. I am so happy that I did. An easy bezel change re-ignited the whole honeymoon with the GMT and a bracelet change on the Speedy greatly improved it. I do rotate about 20 luxury watches in my collection, which helps to keep things fresh and exciting. I have also bought cheap beaters to scratch the itch, but that doesn't work for me personally - I never wear them.

I sold about 30 watches in the last couple of years, honing my collection down to higher tier pieces that I actually wear. Bought two affordables last year though, thinking I would wear them, but nope, not really happening.

If you must do some trading play around with G-Shocks and Seikos. Bought right you may make a few $£€, and if you get it wrong you won't lose much. Don't sell Rolex is a simple golden rule, especially if you get thrown the odd bone by your AD.

Rolex prices are all hot air. When I was you in the 1960’s Rolex was a good watch . It was obtainable by even middle class people. It became an over inflated ego watch. To be seen wearing a Rolex meant that you were successful. The Submariner is a good watch. What is not good is the people who buy it. It is a diving Watch. When you see the overweight male wearing it you know the wrong person has it. It might get wet he jumps in the pool. It is absolutely disgusting.
