Took my mum watch shopping today, she wanted to purchase a watch for my sister's future husband. She's not familiar with horology, so to her "Rolex" was the only brand she understood as luxury. Went into an AD, branded as "Rolex" - my mum asked the price of the Date Just Fluted Bezel. The AD let out a giggle and her colleagues were snickering at my mum. I told my mum, let's leave this store. Took her to JLC, got a Master Control - they treated us with respect and like actual human beings. Not garbage. This is what will be the downfall of Rolex, their AD's act like they own the brand - have no sense of customer relations. Absolute garbage, a watch with just a date complication and they act like it's a Tourbillon. Hype or no hype, Rolex doesn't control their sales-staff since they don't own any boutiques; they do business through these AD's who act like they're immortals put on this earth to demean people. (Sorry I just had to let this out somewhere, never been so frustrated with such an experience)

I think the Planet Ocean is the best "new" divers watch of the last 20 years. Adrian is right that the Rolex is timeless (not surprising since the design rarely changes) but the Omega also got everything right from the start. I own both a Deepsea and a PO chronograph and if I had to sell both and just have one diver then the Omega featured in this video is the one I'd go for.

Its the best watch full stop at this price range, best movement in the market, best quality, best innovation I could go on. Omega is now at the top of the market, Rolex has been crushed. Rolex has rested far too long on its laurels, its just a brand now. Omega doesn't just offer a far better product, but its far cheaper than anything Rolex can offer in kind. People compare the Submariner with the planet ocean but that's not a fair comparison, if you take the price into account you have to compare the planet ocean chronograph with the submariner and the difference between them is staggering.
@bluebox3033 жыл бұрын
It's not publicized much, but the Planet Ocean's design does have history to it. It's a modern, evolved of the Seamaster 300 design from the 1960s. (References 165.024-166.024) These were divers customized and issued by the Royal Navy, which did their jobs so well they set the MoD's standard for a dive watch. The relation is clear in the dial layout (trapezoidal hour markers with cardinal arabics), case style (lyre lugs), and bezel (Coin-style with exaggerated crenellations). Those vintage references were also a iterations of the original ck2913 introduced in 1957. So while it's not a well-known fact, the design has stood the test of time.

@@TurnRiver Yeah, pretty surprising he wouldn’t know or talk about this. Probably also a fault on Omega’s part to not push this fact more in marketing. Same with the white gold decorated dial compared to the more basic decoration of the Seamaster Diver 300.
@johnyu883 жыл бұрын
Omega managed to design the PO in a way that feels like it was always in its catalog, for several decades (I think the lyre lugs heavily influence that). I personally feel the PO will age just as well as the SD, and the incorporation of some innovative materials (ZrO2, Liquidmetal, SiO2 co-axial balance) makes it even cooler to me.
@torqueofthedevil8145 Жыл бұрын
Your feelings aren't facts, however the 50 year pedigree of the SD speaks for itself
@SuperiorityQomplex Жыл бұрын
@@torqueofthedevil8145 The 50 year pedigree argument is what kind of puts me off with Rolex. Without some knowledge and a decent eye, it's very difficult to discern the difference between a modern Rolex and one your Grandpa used to wear. Omega on the other hand is creating modern designs as well as modernizing classic designs as well. Not to mention improving the tech like liquid metal, co-axial movements (which I'd argue are superior to Rolex Movements), and even making superior antimagnetic watches as standard instead of specialties like the Milligauss. I sort of liken it to the Samsung vs Apple argument with phones. Last years iPhone is going to be almost identical to this years' iPhone. Samsung, you're going to find some real innovation that Apple won't be able to copy for years to come. All that said, I have no real problem with Rolex. They do make great watches. I personally find their innovation to be lazy and lacking. And the prices that they charge aren't based on superior quality, just a recognized heritage. And perhaps that's why they don't want to ever improve or innovate. They want people to be reminded of the old legacy rather than upgrade to modern tools. I will say though, Omega has an older pedigree than Rolex does. So if that's what's holding your opinion, I'd not based on facts. Rolex just did better during the quartz watch revolution than other Automatic watches did. But Omega used to be recognized as superior timepiece company over Rolex until then. It will be interesting to see what will happen in the next 50 years or so. Mind you, watches will be made by AI Automation by that time and we'll be chased by terminators who won't care what time it is. ;)
@PhinallyWC083 жыл бұрын
Just to note, regarding to the "History"/Length of time of the design, that even though the Planet Ocean model itself is relatively new, the design is essentially a modern reimagination of the Omega Seamaster 300 165.024, which was introduced in 1962
@morganthedruid13 жыл бұрын
Yes if you look at the original 2201.50 or 2201.51 they look like old watches yet they are only 15 years old, the PO line got shinier and more colourful in later generations.
@paulbelopolsky74603 жыл бұрын
I think you’re unfair in saying that the design of the PO won’t stand the test of time. It’s a design inspired by Omega Seamasters from the 50’s and 60’s. Other than the HE valve it’s a pretty pure design and I believe it will age well. I love Rolex too, but other than resale value nothing about these two watches can justify one being priced 3 times the other, or even two times. Plus, now that the Seadweller has the cyclops nothing much really differentiates it from a Submariner other than the water resistance specs. From that perspective the PO is more unique imho.
@mattmcd8813 жыл бұрын
Accurate. The PO aesthetic is stellar, and takes the best bits from the olde 1960’s Seamaster 300 and the Seamster 2254, and updates the whole package with the excellent bracelet, coax movement, etc. If Omega don’t mess with it, and especially they can slim it down slightly, it will absolutely look good forever.
@willemdeleeuw80943 жыл бұрын
Hah hah. If value for money was all that mattered we'd all be wearing Seiko. These things are always subjective but from an iconic design standpoint Rolex smashes Omega at every turn. This is the first time I'm seeing the Planet Ocean and it reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where the woman was beautiful under some lighting but hideous in others. It could just be the videography but I wouldn't fork out thousands for a watch I wasn't sure about. If I could(!) get a Sea-Dweller at retail I think I'd go for it. Yes, it's expensive, but these things last a lifetime and I'm definitely not unsure about it.
@paulbelopolsky74603 жыл бұрын
Design is a subjective category. Omega has made some great watches over the years and continues to do so. If you have any doubts go to an Omega boutique and take a closer look. Either of the two watches he compares will long outlive any of us. The current Seadweller is a pretty meh watch, with nothing really to distinguish it from your average Submariner. Rolex makes great watches, so does Omega. If they were priced similarly and both equally available then we could have this conversation.
@alfieakaronaldog3 жыл бұрын
I have a PO now and love it (the only Omega I like though). One of the reasons I got it was so I could be subjective about them because of all the Omega BS that is around. The SD is twice the cost of the PO, not Three times, and it’s better value IMO. Have you worn both? I imagine the PO will be updated soon. My guess is it will look nothing like the current one, and that Adrian will soon be proved to be correct and completely ‘fair’. I agree the Cyclops is a bad addition to the SD, but it looks nothing like a horribly thin Sub! You say ‘unique’ looking, as if it’s somehow positive. A/ It’s not B/ You cannot have it both ways. It will either ‘stand the test of time’ or (as I feel) will shortly be replaced by something completely different (‘unique’?),and ugly.

Honestly, the Rolex is mostly purchased and worn by "Desk Divers". Most of the professional dive watches that I see heading out of our local marina on the wrists of instructors are Seiko.
@KMartineauMuisc3 жыл бұрын
Thats why these are classified as 'luxury divers' - if i needed a reliable watch to dive with, i would go with Seiko or maybe Tudor Pelagos, but im fancy so i bought a Rolex Sub C... and a Seiko, and a Panerai, and a Pelagos.... whoops
@WomenHitTheWall3 жыл бұрын
The only reason is that Seiko is way more cheaper than Rolex and Omega, so if the watch is damaged, the divers can replace it easily.

The thing I don't like about this seadweller is that they put the same movement into an unnecessarily large case, that meant that the date was too far in towards the centre. To disguise that they added the cyclops but traditionally seadwellers never had a cyclops and I prefer them without one.

Great video! I own a SD43 and now feel I should also add a Planet Ocean (albeit I will go with the white dial and orange bezel configuration). For a future comparison, it will be interesting to see how a Pelagos compares to these two. If you do a video like this, please make sure the Pelagos has a black dial making the comparison apples to apples (aesthetically). Thanks again, Adrian, for the great content.
@marcgirard75513 жыл бұрын
Great review, Adrian. I personally prefer the Planet Ocean here but believe Omega really need to do something about the thickness of the watch. I feel like a Planet Ocean 39.5mm with a thinner case would be a Sub killer and Sea Dweller killer and an ultimate Seamaster. I sold my PO 42mm and if I replaced it with a new Seamaster, it would be a Seamaster 300 (vintage inspired ones) or an AquaTerra - smaller, thinner than PO.
@Swedeslung2 жыл бұрын
Ive owned 3 Omega watches (2 smpc's and one PO 42mm), a subc and an SD43. Since my 2008 2201.50, Omega has completely redesigned that watch and changed its proportions 3 different times. They modulate the watch so often that even the first PO seems dated. The current sub/SD looks has stayed steadfast to its heritage with only subtle modulations over many years. Either way both are amazing watches.
@VoodooMike3 жыл бұрын
Both are really nice watches, but I don't really get the demand for professional divers watches unless you're a professional diver. Of the two I'd go for the PO as I prefer the larger face-to-case ratio. Plus I've never been keen on Rolex's Cyclops

I think the Omega Planet Ocean is the true heir to the Seamaster 300. It has so many design elements that carry through. The coin-edge bezel, the design of the dial, and it's a proper tool watch. I love my Seamaster pro, but it isn't a straight tool watch.

I have owned two Rolexes (Yacht-Master 16622 and Oyster Perpetual) and two Omegas (Ploprof 1200M and Speedmaster Mark II) and currently own one of each brand. I would choose the Planet Ocean based upon the value proposition and my general sense of Rolex overload. My current dive watch of preference is a Grand Seiko SBGA229 stainless steel spring drive reference which I love for the finishing and horology. At the Sea Dweller prices, I would be inclined to look at the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms over Rolex. If I was starting from scratch on a clean slate basis, I would probably choose between the Omega Seamaster 300M wave dial or look at a Ulysses Nardin dive reference which offers something distinct from both Omega and Rolex. Thank you again for your always thoughtful videos.

I totally agree that the Sea Dweller is a better made product, but is it 3x better made? For that price, you can venture into used Lange territory, Moser, JLC and some truly spectacular high horology pieces. I know many people buy and appreciate their Rolex pieces, but to me, Rolex has become a type of watch currency and that's really soured my opinion of the watches themselves.

Oh damn, my two absolute favorite dive watches. Thanks for that comparison. Regarding “timeless” watches. Every watch design started at some point. The Sea Dweller & Sun designed were also seen as polarizing when they came out. If something is timeless, only time will tell. Same goes for the PO. Also, timeless can also be boring. I have the Sub 126610LN, love it, but it’s also somewhat boring, why my next watch will be that exact same Omega PO.

I own that exact Planet Ocean model and love it dearly. Not a Rolex hater and would love to own a Sea Dweller as well. My question is, is it really an apples to apples comparison? The price points are so far off, of course the Rolex should be a more refined product. Just because they're the "flagship" divers of the two brands doesn't make them similar. The Aquaracer Professional 300 appears to be Tag's "flagship" diver but wouldn't be in comparable to either of these watches. Wouldn't a better comparison of who's best be done by price point?
