This and IK+ proved that Rob was so good on the 6581 , that he could even better his own originals by remixing them within the boundaries of the c64.

One of the best if not THE BEST on the c64, so multilayered and complex, pure genius!!!

Wow! This is amazing! When I watched the video, I thought there are Sawtooth, Rectangle and Noise overlapping each other in the same voice, and I thought: WTF! How is this possible if it is not digitized sound (which I know it isn't). Now when I watched it in slow motion, I can see that they are not overlapping, but interspersed, so they give the illusion of multiple voices in the same channel. I didn't know this is possible, as I thought this can only be done with i.e. drums or such, where you have distinct pauses in between which you can use to inject other sounds. Really great work!

I think this is based on Crazy Comets, it definitely has that motif. EDIT: yep it's a fucking sequel to it

Yep just found it out as well, that Mega Apocalypse is not a Crazy Comets ripoff, but a follow up game! Didn't know that game!

Some nice arps but not a patch on his original composition. Also the Original game loaded in 27 seconds from tape which was great if (like me) all you wanted was the music accompanied by the starfield swirl on the intro screen.
@RichardM-kv4uu3 жыл бұрын
Disagree strongly, this is FAR superior to the original tune!
@richardwhitehead69662 жыл бұрын
@@RichardM-kv4uu I think they both have their own special qualities. I commented on the Crazy Comets theme that it sounds as though it heavily influenced the Arilou theme from Star Control 2. Crazy Comets is a bit more laid back and Mega Apocalypse cranks up the tempo.

I never understood the silence at 0:22
@rogerwennstrom66778 жыл бұрын
It's weird: on a friends c64 there was a low volume "tick tick tick" sound in the background during that silence - sort of like a snare drum - which kept the silent part more interesting. I guess it only was some kind of electrical intereference (as nothing can be heard or seen on the scopes here) but it sorta worked better that way.
@rogerwennstrom66778 жыл бұрын
Hmm, or do I remember it wrong and confusing it with the very end of the song? Damn, I'm getting old :(
@AntonioPetrelli8 жыл бұрын
I checked on Stone Oakvalley's Authentic SID Collection and none of the chip versions MP3s you can listen the tick tick. However the length of those MP3s are 7:22 instead of 7:46, so either the STIL info are broken or, possibly, there is a bug in the SID code that prevented the tick tick to sound on first iteration.
@wbdeejay7 жыл бұрын
It's a… dramatic pause! Always loved that touch
@wbdeejay7 жыл бұрын
Roger Wennström in this clip you can hear the ticks near the end ~7:45 - after the tune has started repeating and hits that "silent" part again
@timcrompton34278 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the heavy borrowing from Crazy comets was intentional? It's almost like he hacked his own tune and changed a few values to hear what it would sound like. When I saw the patterns on the 1st osc I knew it straight away having watched crazy comets so many times.

Me and my friends had a blast with this. It was simultaneous two player and had tons of speech samples (which mattered back then). If you didn't like Crazy Comets then this will not be even worth looking at. It was more of the same, but fancier.
