I am 45 and am back after 20 years, finding a new joy in roller skating that I have never experienced , especially when I was a kid competing, I didn’t like it much. I love the new feeling I have as an adult skating, I feel I am able to express myself better through skating as an adult than I did as a kid 💪💜 I’m glad you’re back at it! 💜💪

I got back into skating after 30 years, and my adult son was understandably concerned. Half-joking, half-serious, he was like, "Mom, you're pushing 60. Are you sure you want to do this?" He went skating with me on my b'day, and lost steam after about 1.5 hours, went to the bench, and took off his skates. Still in my skates, I bent down so we were eye level, and said, "I never, ever, ever want to hear the words, 'pushing 60' come out of your mouth again." I go to the rink twice a week, and I'm getting stronger & healthier with more stamina. I've made new friends, and not just in my age group. It's keeping me young.

I love this!!! I remember working at the bank in my thirties, and a client came into our branch, she was telling us, "next week is my 90th birthday. I want a pair of roller skates for my birthday." She was serious. It made us laugh, because her legs were shaky, and that was already without the skates. Seriously looking back, perhaps she figured if she had skates it would help strengthen her legs. Knowing the era she grew up in, it must have made her feel light on her feet, and she just wanted that relief of her yesteryears. I now feel bad about the way I perceived that situation.

I'm pushing 50, I knew roller skating would be so much better than a treadmill. The music, movement, speed and gliding. Even though I was one of the few non black people at the rink. I was welcome and just breezed in and made some friends. I'm thinking skating is a feeling that overcomes boundaries.

@@hollywood5703 I wrote to dirty and asked her what skates to buy and she said suregrip fame and that is what I got. They were perfect to learn (again) on. I went to the beginners classes and i learned right along with the kids. You will find that these classes along with the classes on you tube will get you going. Learn how to adjust your wheels and follow the basics from Dirty Deb. The first time I went to the rink I was nervous but I just pushed on. Good Luck - Song

People laughed when I said I was going to go to a lesson. They laughed even harder when I said I fell trying to get up (5 weeks on my butt still hurts, I landed hard). But at the rink I have met some of the most amazing people and I can’t stop now. I’m ordering my own skates this week. It’s not a passing fad. This just reinforces it in my head. I hope one day I do figure out how Facebook realised I needed this in my life and started showing me ads……..

Watching this right now and it’s spot on! I just turned 69 on May 7. Roller skated as a kid on those old, metal, adjustable skates with a key (still have them!) went to our roller rink off/on maybe once a year. Then my town’s rink closed about 20 years ago. I’d also taken lessons when I was a Girl Scout - but instructors seemed to cater to those who were quick learners. Never heard about bubbles, weight transfer, or edges. Bought a pair of Chicago speed skates at age 65. Went on a trail, after too quick of steps - looking at my feet🤦🏻‍♀️ - I finally got some good striding in. Then life happened, a move, and skates went into storage. Got new heeled style boots for my birthday. Doing about 10 minutes a day in my house. My goal/obsession is to be able to skate backwards! It’s like I know what I need to do, but body doesn’t cooperate! I got to where I can do backwards bubbles and can skate backwards pretty well by weight on one leg, striding with the other. Today - using both legs - went about 4 feet. Not great - a bit stiff and wobbly - but I’m progressing!!! I’m in good health and am active. I’ve assessed risks - bought protective gear and will wear when I finally venture outdoors over this July 4th weekend!! Thank you so very, very much for your tutorials!!! I have watched other’s as well, but have been helped the most by yours!!! I’m giddy-over-the-moon excited over this!! Happy 55th to you‼️ ❤️🛼🎉🎁🎂🎈🎊❤️🎊

I also find that a lot of people say things that they think of themselves. My sister said once I was obsessed with skating and I should give it up and grow up. "Meh!" Was my response Recently, I heard her say to my other sister (they are closer in age), she said she wishes she could skate, but she feels she's too old. I didn't make it obvious I heard her say this. I found a skate video where ladies that look around the same age as her were killing it in the skate rink and played it on my TV. I watch skate videos all the time so no one would think it out of the ordinary. My thinking was to provide some inspiration when she came into the room. I'll keep planting positive seeds 😊

This is so important!! I had friends and family tell me I’m crazy and was going to get hurt, some people were a bit judgmental. I’m so happy I took those comments with a grain of salt. And it’s so true what you said about the reasons being deeper than people realize for why I started skating a few years ago. It has brought me a freedom and liberation that I never knew I could feel, especially as a queer black woman. Literally every aspect of my life has changed drastically for the better ever since I bought a pair of roller skates in 2018. It truly changed my life

Hi Dirty! My name is Jennie and I am learning to skate at 50! My husband and other family members have definitely expressed their concern about me picking up skating at50 and fuller sized. 😜 I got new skates along with full protective gear. My kids, 15 and 20; are fully behind me and so supportive! My daughter and I are taking this journey together. I did feel those seeds of doubt after hearing some reactions to starting skating. But I’ve also watched a boat load of your videos along with videos of people gliding down the boardwalk at sunset and that just spoke to my soul. Thank you so much for your beautiful words and your passion. It means so much knowing there is a community out there rooting for you. I’ve (mostly) raised my kids, staying at home for 20 years! This I’m doing for me and I’m so excited! 💕🛼🛼🛼

I’m 51. My kid is 26. The past couple of years have been really hard for him. Last September he was looking for a job and I saw a listing at our local rink and encouraged him to apply. He was hired as a floor guard and doing something he loves and getting regular exercise has done a ton to improve his mental health. I started skating to support him and enjoyed it enough to buy my own skates. My husband, 55, has NEVER skated, looked at us and said, “this is what we’re doing now? Ok,” and bought himself a pair as well and now the two of us are taking adult lessons. If you asked me a year ago if my whole family would be changed and improved by adding roller skating to our lives I would probably be really confused! But it has brought us together in ways I never expected. We’re never too old to challenge ourselves and learn new things! Thank you, Deb, for being such a terrific teacher and coach and part of our skating journey! ❤️🛼

I haven’t been on skates since I was a teenager and haven’t been on inlines since I was in my 20s and everyone who thinks that I am bonkers for picking it up again can kiss my big booty. I feel sad for those who say “oh, I use to love skating but I’m too old now”. No you’re not, be safe and you’ll be fine. If something gets broken, well, it’ll get fixed and life will go on. If I can learn to ride a dirt bike when I turned 37 and then get my street bike license at 45, I can start roller skating again. It’s fun, it makes me happy and with all the crap in the world, a little bit of happy is a good thing. Thank you Dirty for your great words and your great videos. You have helped me get back out and rolling with confidence. Thank you for your words to this skater and to her for letting it be shared. Learning something new is always a good thing and knowing that there is a community to back you up, online or in real life, is the best. ❤️❤️❤️

I’m currently learning to skate as an adult, I was originally scared I was “too old” and people would judge me. So far people have only had good things to say. I used to dance as a kid, and ever since I stopped I’ve had a hard time finding a fun way to exercise. Skating has made me feel so happy and free! I’m still a little self-conscious in my pads and helmet scooting through a parking lot as a grown woman, but with age I’ve also decided I don’t need to worry about the opinions of strangers the way I used to. Thank you, Dirty Debbie, for your awesome videos! You have helped and inspired me so much!

I came across a young tic tocker (early 20ties) that said, "Old People shouldn't skate" then she posted people trying to relearn how to skate and falling, then this B was laughing. It is people like that will stop certain people from learning, getting better at a new skill, she really upset me! Thanks again Dirty D for your wisdom.

Love this ♥♥ I got so much push back from my hubby, my parents & family when I bought my quad skates after 30 years of not skating, at 55 years old. Did I listen? Nah, I never do! 😆 But I also told myself I do have to use judgement and wisdom. So am I about to drop into a bowl? No way, I know my limitations! 😅 I've fallen hard several times but as you said, it's all worth it! Falling comes with the territory, and though Skating brings happiness, it also makes you stronger & tougher 😆 💪🏼

I don't often comment on things but I felt I really had to with this one. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video. I am 39. My daughter skates and she is really good. We are at the rink 3 times a week for her various lessons etc. My other two kids are also learning too. I skated when I was a kid, but as an encouragement to my son I put skates on again and found something I didn't know I was missing. I was just starting to gain a bit of confidence when I had a freak balance tip and I broke my ankle. The general consensus from friends and family was at that point assuming I "was done" with the skates. I agreed outwardly, inside all I could think about was how gutted I was I wouldn't be able to do it again. I was really really down about it. But I also felt obligated to not take the risk again as lots of people rallied round when I needed them to help with family stuff and I just knew the judgement would be there. The only place I did not feel judged was at the rink. Friends I have made there are the only ones who understand. I did get back on the skates. I owe that to one friend in particular who encouraged me and supported me, helped me push through the mental block I had (and still have sometimes). She will probably never know just how much impact she has had in my life and how truly grateful I am to her. The fear was immense. The shaking at times was too much. But I can't tell you how much I related to your comment about skating "calling" you. It calls me! I haven't been able to fully admit that to a lot of people. But my determination to do this is always greater than the fear. So I keep going. I didn't tell anyone for a while that I had went back on the skates as I knew there would be judgement. I am still so far away from being a relaxed and graceful skater, I know a lot of that is down to time, I only really get to skate once a week. But I love it so much. I love the sport and I love the people who have given me the confidence to try again. Thank you so much for your content. It helps me so much and I am grateful to you for your contribution to my skating journey too. ❤️

I'm just 30 and I've already heard similar things for other hobbies and likes of mine and every time I hear something similar to "oh, aren't you too old for this or that?" I just have to comment. Deb thank you for this video that really connected with me. Had some tears watching this wow, didn’t think I would . I bought skates kinda as a joke 10+ years ago and never took them out. I skated as a kid and loved it! Recently I have been in a bad mental funk and needed another Avenue to help me self heal. So I bought some better skates and I have been practicing everyday. Of course ppl near me have kinda thought how silly and that’s weird.. it really did make me feel stupid, hurt And sad. But I’ve never let what people said stop me. I’ve always went against the normal and I honestly have been enjoying skating and like you said it has helped me in other ways besides getting in shape for me it’s been more of a mental wellness journey. The girl next door to me told me I was a child because I roller skated. At the time, I was 15 and she was 16. Comments from people who try to discourage you can come from young and old. It could be some level of insecurity on their part. I stayed with skating regardless of what anyone said to me. Don't let anyone keep you from doing what you love. Your point about your uncle is very valid. I find that skating keeps me young at heart.

Not having fun as an adult is pointless, not to mention irresponsible in itself considering we are the inspiration for younger generations. Life can be too depressing to begin with, have as much fun as you can, every step of the way. Went to a different rink than usual the other day, had some young girl yelling insults at me. While it irritated me, I kept having fun and could skate far better than her (figured she must be jealous). Then she fell in front of me and had a completely horrified look on her face when she turned to see me. In all reality, I felt bad for her with her bad attitude. Regardless, I’m gonna keep skating, I’m learning more now in the last 4 years than I learned my entire skating childhood years. The older you get, the more exercise you need.

I didn't get through my pain of a childhood just to gain freedom and not do all the things I couldn't do due to my age or lack of money, lol. And anyway, adults are just bigger kids with more responsibilities, but people act like kids are a different, inferior species. The ideal is really growing up, learning and improving, but still managing to keep the joyful, youthful part of you who does things like roller skate.

I love this attitude. I've found my love for skating and then roller derby last year, at 29, and there's no way I'm stopping now. There will always be someone unhappy with my hobbies of choice and I'm not planning to make that my problem. As long as I'm not hurting anyone, it would be a waste of energy to fit into entire world's definition of what a functioning adult should be doing with their lives. To each their own.

I've had many hospital visits, and situations where I've been so medically frail i had to relearn how to walk and gain my strength back. I use to go roller skating every friday Saturday and sunday back in middle school and high school, and i just picked it back up. Now I'm wearing my wrist and elbow guards spending every Saturday night at the rink and i just finally learned how to backwards skate. My family is concerned for my safety of course, im enjoying my freedom and abilities while i still have them and it definitely is a journey of growth i will keep sticking to and keep practicing. Thanks for all your help to us internet folk ! I'll be grooving to my favorite songs in no time.

I think something that might also be in play here is the assumption that the older you are, the weaker your bones and muscles are and the worse your coordination and balance are. Thus, you are more likely to have an accident and more like to get seriously injured. Which might indeed be true, but ignores the fact that these things are not static. You can make your bones and muscles stronger, and your coordination and balance better, by regularly moving your body. So the more you skate, the less likely you are to have an accident, and the less likely it is you will be seriously injured even if you have an accident. I'm in my mid forties and only just started learning to skate. I went skating outside for the very first time yesterday. Within a minute I pretty much fell flat on my face. But I was prepared for that. Physically, by wearing knee pads and wrist guards. And mentally, by listening to Debs telling us that you will fall, everybody falls, so try to fall safe and be ready for it. So when I fell I told myself: okay, we knew this was gonna happen, just get back up and keep moving. And I did. I'm making myself stronger, physically and mentally, by learning how to skate in my mid forties. And that is a great thing.

I find this absolutely ridiculous! I was raised with the belief that it’s never too late to try something new or return to something you haven’t done in a long time. How could anyone have a problem with this? I think the naysayers are just afraid to try anything new…maybe they’re a little jealous.

From experience, that's exactly just... that. People are afraid to live and to be themselves and project that onto others.

I got this a bit from my parents after I broke my ankle skating two years ago at 32. The reason I fell was I was distracted doing too many things and not being focused enough on my skating and environment. Not because I was over reaching attempting skills I hadn't trained. But, having had to take care of me through surgery and recovery I can understand why they thought I was a bit crazy when I was ready to put my skates back on. They seemed to be under the impression that fracturing my fibula and snapping my ligaments put me off skating for life. Nope. They don't tell me I'm irresponsible, but anytime my mom knows I'm going out to skate she is sure to tell me to be careful, and not to break anything!

I appreciate this so much. I turned 48 last month and just put on a pair of skates the other day for the first time in about 20 - 30 years. I'm working a summer camp where the students go to the roller rink twice a week. After watching them do it for about a week and thinking about it for a few weeks before, I decided to go for it. I definitely self assessed and decided to start by staying on the carpeted area with limited movement. Honestly, the only person who was giving me any of the negative talk was me, myself, and I. Mostly the "you're not going to bounce back if you hurt yourself" conversation. Pretty much everyone else was supportive. "Wow, you're braver than me" or "Good for you!" etc. I'm glad I did it but I was incredibly nervous after so long. I'll probably put them on again tomorrow. Maybe by the end of summer I'll actually get out on the rink.

I love this! I’m 50 and started skating with my 7 yr old daughter! I’m still new and scared and lost my confidence after a fall where I hurt my ribs quite badly but I’m still going. I see it as a mental and physical challenge that I will eventually master. My daughter is going great though and this has become ‘our thing’ to go skating together and we invite her school friends and their parents to come with us sometimes too! Way more fun than going to a park to play!

Thank you for this, Deborah! I've been so inspired lately watching roller skating videos on youtube. Years ago I used to take my two daughters skating regularly and we had so much fun. Now I want to get back into it, but it seems that all the roller rinks in Maine and New Hampshire have closed. I am so disappointed! I am searching for a place to start skating again. P.S. I love your videos.

Hi Debbie, I have already put a comment in another one of your videos about getting back into it after 35+ years? I can’t remember if the last time was either 85’ or ‘86. But at the time I was almost 40 and now I am 75! I got rid of my original Riedell skates and picked up some on eBay that were much like mine but newer. They seem to be working out all right but needed some adjustments. It is more or less like starting all over and I was so intimidated the first time just standing up. I watched your videos before going out and I think they helped me to understand the kinetics balance weight distribution and also not to look at my feet! I can get around the rink I had protective gear on all three areas, and I never did fall. I didn’t think about that I just thought about weight distribution, etc, as you mentioned in your videos. I have given up so many sports over the years that this one seemed like the least impact on my body. I was going to do bounce boots but I changed my mind and now I’m trying to sell them! I will continue my journey on roller skates and hopefully I get the hang of it after a few visits to the skating rink. Unfortunately I can only get there about once a week. Wish me luck! Kathy

Hey Deb! I remember this time last year when I was just trying to get my legs under me and I found your vids... and we passed a coupla emails back and forth. I had folks who tried to talk me out of it... People who had tried and injured themselves early in their process. But still I kept going. I wanted to skate. A year later am I doing all the tricks and such? Nah, not really. But I joined a derby team and made reqs a few weeks ago. I am having the time of my life and have met some truly amazing folks through the sport. Now I'm trying to conquer skating outside in the street (it's not been the greatest but I gear up fully and assess risk constantly). I refuse to accept that I'm being irresponsible bc for real skating is getting me back into good physical shape (and emotional too). Thanks for the reminders!

I just turned 41 and I'm trying to learn roller skating. I've gone twice thus far and, the first time I attempted it, I almost quit and nearly broke into tears. I was so frustrated that I couldn't even get the basic moves right. I used a skate mate and I still struggled to stay upright. However, I told myself, "Nuh-uh, you're not quitting. I don't care how messy your skating is, you're going to complete a lap around this rink each time you come out here." I did notice that each time I went out to the rink, I got the slightest bit better somehow, whether it was stance, movement, etc. I'm VERY heavy and I work up a sweat each time. When I went my second time, again I'm very messy, even with a skate mate. But each time I went out, I was getting the slightest bit better...so I'm taking my tiny successes where I can. I plan on going again this weekend and I want to keep working at it.

Thanks for your inspiring words Deborah. I am 53 and a friend just took up skating and asked me to try out at a rink. I was terrified. So I searched KZbin for tutorials and found your awesome channel. I did my first try and straight up bought some old skates to PRACTICE. Your words on why we are doing tis really resonate with me. The music I heard while you were talking was the Streisand classic, don’t rain on my parade ;-). My one as as a total novice is I’d love to see a video with your advice on how not to feel dizzy when skating. Maybe its an age thing but it struck me on my first trial how if I wasn’t careful or getting something quite right, I kind of felt a bit dizzy…. Is it just me? ATVB.

I love the way you responded to this question. You even put a positive way when you said, This person is wanting you to be safe and not get hurt. People know around me to never tell me I can’t or not to roller skate. I’ve been roller obsessed since I strapped those metal skates onto my shoes when I was very young like 7-8yrs old and only increased when I went to the first roller rink when I was 12 and put on the real roller skates for the first time, what a blast that was!! As a teen I skated anytime I was free and how I loved Friday and Saturday nights. We started at 7:00pm and stopped at 12:00am…5 straight hours!!! My family know that when I die, I want my skates on my feet with my favourite skating songs from the 70’s and 80’s. That’s how much roller skating is in me!! Roller skating doesn’t come with an age limit on it, as you brought out about your uncle. No box of roller skates has a warning on the outside of it saying, Warning if you’re over the age of 25, you cannot buy these skates. Hell no!! Skate until you feel that breeze in your face and the marvellous feeling of the wheels moving beneath your feet. There’s no better feeling in the world than moving on roller skates!! Enjoy!!🤗😊🛼🛼🛼🛼🛼

Hi Deb! I just recently got back into skating after almost 20 years away from it. I went to a skating rink with a friend of mine a few years ago and the memories came back of spending time at the skate rink as a teenager. I remember putting on my rental skates and I was wobbly for a few minutes, but that muscle memory came back after about an hour or so. I loved it! I missed the feeling of roller skating. So I decided to buy a pair skates to really get back into skating on a regular basis. I’m super excited to be back on this journey again at 42 almost 43 years old! I love my new jam skates, and I’m so excited to get back in the rink! I would say to those getting back into skating, don’t give up! Thank you for being an inspiration! Your videos have helped me tremendously! Happy belated Birthday!

I love this! I had a lot of people pretty apprehensive about me starting to skate (about 2 years ago, age 30) and earlier this year a wandering toe stop had me and 2 others wipe out HARD at my local rink, I broke my pinky and needed surgery, the finger was pinned for 6 weeks. Week 7 I was back at the rink. Some people think I’m crazy, other people think I’m brave…at the end of the day, it makes me happy, and in these times anything that brings me joy is a good thing! In the words of dita von teese “you can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world…and there’s still going to be somebody who doesn’t like peaches.” You can’t please everyone, worry about pleasing yourself ❤️

I’ve got to chime in too. I’m 45 years old and just got my first pair of skates a handful of months ago and honest to goodness I skate better now than I did as a kid! I honestly think that’s because I’m older, more familiar with my body and how it works, and I’ve got a stronger mind over matter than I did when I was little. I’m a child abuse survivor and my self esteem has been in the toilet for the better part of my life, and I’m always trying to find ways to power through that and roller skating and Dirty’s videos have helped me build some very needed self esteem and confidence. Roller skating is great exercise both physically and mentally(not to mention incredibly fun) and exercise is good for you and if anyone wants to make fun of your choice of exercise (or activities) or tell you, you shouldn’t be doing it for whatever reason, that’s a them problem not a you problem. I say skate your butt off if that’s what fills you with joy and makes you happy. That’s what I’m doing and no one can stop me! :)

Thank you so much for this video! And for all the amazing stories in the comments. I moved to a smaller Scottish town last year and I've hardly skated because I'm self-conscious about it (there's more anonymity in a big city!) I skated last week and I forgot how much it lights me up and makes me happy. I've been on a bit of a personal journey the last couple of years, and especially the last two months. And I've realised that skating is part of who I've always been - I just didn't realise it. I found a new skate rink in the next town over so I'm going to go there tomorrow and skate my freakin' heart out!

Love this video! Thank you for the encouragement. I am what they call a rink rat. I grew up in the rink, but when I became an adult, that all changed. Now three kids later and last one is a year from leaving the nest, I decided to dust off the old skates so to speak (i bought new ones though lol) anyway, I am almost 47 and I got them in the mail, bought new wheels and bearings, pads, helmet, even got some cute skater socks... I put them on, stood up and was like "holy cinnamon crackers" and down I went! But I got back up and tried again. I made my way outside and after several almost falls, I made it down the 50ft driveway and back! Lol I just might make it into the derby next year after all! :) So to everyone out there who wants to skate, skate! If you fall, more like WHEN you fall, just get up, and try again, because each time you'll be making progress! Set little goals for yourself. My next goal is making it all around the perimeter of the property. Then after that, a mile and a half down the road to my parents house :) Good luck everyone! You got this! :) Oh remember, your biggest competition is yourself. And if you always keep pushing forward, you've already won!

I get this comment so much. I’m 35, started skating on quads at 3, and switched to blades by the time I was 7-14. My youngest daughter wanted skates for her birthday. I said ok, but was struggling to teach it with words. So two weeks ago I decided, it was time to buy some skates and get back on them. But I brought quads so I could learn again. It’s amazing how muscle memory comes into play, they arrived last week, I’ve been on them nearly every single day, 4 falls, got my friend skating again too, and a few other people wanting to join us, we’re in the uk, not many skating rinks for us. I loathe gyms and finding the energy to run. But I’ve been enjoying skating so much it’s all my brain wants to do, though I’m truly unfit. It’s like being 10 again and feeling free as your skating round. A sense of flying free! Now my 10 year old wants to learn too. Because mummy is enjoying it. It is infectious, that feeling of joy, nothing has given me the joy that this has in the last week. Now if only the muscle ache would do one lol! Thank you for your videos, it’s been very helpful for me to teach my kids along with myself! If we ever get to America, we’ll be round! I have learnt so much and will continue to watch to learn! Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️

You are soooo spot on! Thank you and your family for showing your love and support of the wonderful world of skating and all those who do it. Tho some are truly concerned, as you said there are always the naysayers who project their own fears to others and just want to steal their joy. They are the ones guick to say I told you so to the ones who may sustain an injury, probably because they think they might have to have some part in taking care of them in some way and inconvenience their lives-God forbid that should ever happen to any skater-but as you said older people are not senile and stupid. They already know these things and will try to avoid them from happening at all costs. The young people are the daredevils with unbridled energy and concerns of the many ways they could be hurt or hurt those around them. Skating is a joy and a freedom of your most inner self expression thru the movements of your body and soul whether it's to music and freestyle outside soaking up the rays, or indoors freestyle or structered dance. For those who skate it is a leading part of a way of life. For those who don't, find someone to teach you and help you learn to find your joy.😀 +3

I only practice in my basement for now anyway, since I live in rural Germany and there isn't anywhere else I could skate. It's SO much harder than it looks, I didn't really expect that. But I can already tell I get a tiny bit better and more confident everytime I skate, and that feels great. I'm not gonna stop.
