It’s the site prices - last time I tried to book my favourite site the prices were crazy - admittedly I only wanted 1 night in August in my campervan, but the prices quoted were crazy. I ended up in a 4 star hotel, on the sea front, with free parking, evening entertainment, an indoor swimming pool. Gym, and sauna, and free afternoon tea for £30 less than the quoted pitch on site! I thoroughly enjoyed my single en suite room and had a great time - but what a ridiculous price for a pitch! I would add I went to all the NEC camping shows since Covid and couldn’t find a single campervan under £80,000 to meet my needs (4 belted seats, sleeps 4, with wheelchair storage, and relatively short in length). I found one at the last show, but it’s £60,000 - it’s a ridiculous price for what it is.

I totally agree on the pitch fee situation. As I said in the video, I went to go and buy a caravan again but wanting 100 pounds for two nights when I supply the sleeping and most the equipment is too steep. By time you add fuel and food talking 350 for two weeks, just silly money. The campervans are insane, it's odd since camper vans were always meant to be cheap things to use to get away in. Not anymore.

We've just sold up. We had a seasonal pitch in Dorset but fees went up to nearly £4K. So we pulled out with the intention of touring. Then when we looked at prices it was just a little bit more to use a static onsite than to take your own. But then you had to book the pool and only got an hour a time. Couldn't justify the cost of it all. Added to that the additional cost of maintaining a large diesel car to tow the van. We've had a lovely 10 day break in spain. All inclusive. Waterpark, pools entertainment etc for less than 3k. So much better value. Caravanning in the UK has gone nuts. Also, in the UK, any day out with the kids to a venue is at least £100 a DAY! Abroad is much better value, and better weather.

This perfect storm has been on the Horizon for quite sometime . Caravanning in general has become an expensive destination, Tiow Car, Equipment , then the pitch fees . With the market shrinking , it will have a knock on effect with the sites as £35-50 per night on average isn’t really affordable for some . The manufacturers are wholly responsible for this glutinous overpriced pastime . I’ve said it before , the first UK Manufacturing brand will have to get quality improved or go out of business. The quality doesn’t keep up with the prices .

I agree with pitch fees. I did look at buying one again but then saw it was 40/50 a night. I refuse to pay 200 quid for 4 nights when I supply the sleeping quaters. I literally get a toilet and some electric for that money. We are doing France again this year and it's only 300 more than taking car and caravan. The rest of the year however no caravan, insurance, storage etc to pay for. In theory could get rid of big tow car for something more efficent but not worht it at present.

Years ago tourers or indeed statics didn't have bathrooms, electrics or all mod cons. They were simply made to sleep 2-4 people for cheap weekend and weekly breaks. If you wanted sh#t or a shower you used the facilities on site, for me thats caravaning. My grandparents always had a static on a small farm just outside Blackpool, in the early 70s they bought a new one it could sleep 8, their was no drainage, bathroom, electrics, or water, site fees were so cheap we loved it there. So many people had tourers back then, small and basic but functional, they towed them with normal affordable family cars. We are currently looking at at buying a static, site fees are 5K a year, then you have gas, electric, water, insurance, maintenance charges. Its such a shame caravaning is no longer affordable to the working class, which is a bad thing that kids no longer get this family time outdoors away from the madness of modern life and mobile phones. Greed has ruined everything.

The cost of the van, the tow car, the ridiculously high site prices and add ons. The draconian site rules. Couple that with the fact that campsites are not the same fun as they used to be, caravan and camping holidays are not attracting families anymore due to all of the above reasons, camp sites used to be a big family group, were everyone pitched in, we used to help each other get set up, camaraderie is gone now. Families would get away for a cheap break, not cheap anymore. Cheaper to go abroad now. Dealers and campsites need to take a long hard look at themselves. And when you say £40 a night it's £40 for the pitch then £11 for your awning £5 per person per night over two, £3 per night if you have a dog with you. And some are charging extra for electricity on top of these costs.

Motorcycles... Hear me out. After the war motorcycles were very popular. The father needed transport to get to work and if he had a side car the vehicle could transport him and his family on days out. In 1965 our neighbour used to take his family off for a two week tour of France every summer, with camping gear, on his BSA Combination. These days a motorcycle is a luxury item. Fast track to 40 or 30 years ago. A small caravan would have done the same job. Making a holiday hotel for the family for a fortnight at the seaside or touring. Fast track to today. Vans are very expensive to buy, fuel prices are crippling and when you get there pitch fees are are often more expensive than a family room in a hotel and when costs are totted up its simply cheaper to buy a package all inclusive to spain. Caravans are only for the well healed today, the dynamic has changed and there are too many manufacturers and dealers for the shrinking market. Its simply supply and demand.

We have a nice MH (older one) but the like you said the site fee's are killing our interest, back in 2017 we used to use a site in Rutland Water for a weekend break, was £9 or £11 per night back then, that's doubled now.....that's with ZERO facilities !

Hi, intersting video. Just wondering why do unsold manufacturer supplied caravans go back to the manufacturer if one of "their" dealerships go bust ....dont they belong then to the banks who leaned the money for them to that dealer to buy them from the manufacturer?
@RollingwithTheRobsons
@RollingwithTheRobsons Ай бұрын
It normally is the case but apparently the manufacturers and the banks have a deal. It says they go back to manufacturer and I suppose they get their money back. That couple criple manufacturers though if that is the case. I wouldn't like to be Lloyds at the moment as very exposed to this.

If the dealer hasn't yet actually paid (likely due to paying on extended credit agreement) - then the manufacturer would have 'retention of title' as long as they can prove the specific units that have not been paid for.

The Touring Caravan has lost direction. Back in the 60s they were a simple construction and firms like Caravan International had a boom time allowing the public to buy their Sprites for a little over two hundred pounds using a standard family car. The demand by the public over the years to add on more refinements has led to obese overweight caravans towable by huge SUVs etc, and unfortunately the manufacturers engineering capabilities has not been able to contain the constant problem ok leaking. Who is at fault? The public or the Dealers for bringing us to this pending demise? Or is it greed by all parties including site owners?

The retiree boomers are the caravan trades market. Younger buyers simply don’t have the cash, and won’t take on more debt to buy a depreciating liability, for an experience that looses its appeal after a while, especially if your new to touring, and haven’t spent much time holidaying in caravans, and fed up of wet camping holidays.

That is proably true for some dealers. Alots of dealers are just using similar margins but obviously what they are paying has gone up so they passing it on. It's the manufacturers who build poor vans but they are heavily protected by law. The dealers have to try and fix the issues but often the warranty rate is below what they need to pay to get these things fixed.

It’s not just the RV sector that is suffering though. Ryan Air’s profits are down 46% due to oversupply. No one wants to buy an EV whatever the price either. I’m a semi pro musician and gear I could sell easily last year is sticking around on EBay now. it all comes down to an economic slowdown caused by higher interest rates and high inflation over recent years. The cost of caravans will not fall so buying new now may actually be sensible if you have the cash and can get one of those great deals available. but what will fall is the cost of financing them when interest rates start to fall back. This is not the first time the industry has had problems and it won’t be the last either.

Honestly, there are so many better ways to spend your holiday money that don’t need a huge upfront payment. You could even invest the money you'd use for a new caravan and enjoy a free holiday every year just from the interest. The market is also shrinking because younger adults are finding van life to be a cooler and more modern alternative. I think we’re going to see this trend in a lot of UK industries-they're too focused on their profits and not enough on actually providing value to their customers.
