Well done! Your videos are head and shoulders above any of the other GY6/Buddy 125 content I've seen. The info is concise, accurate, accessible and entertaining. In addition, the parts and kits look to be about the best available to the market, and you certainly know what you're talking about. So...with all of that said...I went and got a 2008 Genuine Buddy 125 today from a seller in Denver. It runs, but it is pretty beat up. (I traded a drone for it.) The previous owner bought it from a police auction, and he thinks it was most likely a joy ride victim. I am the type of person that looks at motorized machinery as art, so I see beyond the dings, dents and cracks. I also do not own anything that I do not modify. :) My goal is to transform this scooter from its current condition into a custom, show-worthy, ass-kicking little bike. After having watched a whole slew of Buddy 125 videos that really didn't offer much in the way of information or inspiration I found your channel. I'm really glad that I did. I now have a much clearer idea of what some of the possibilities are. Since it is currently February, and it's not going to be much fun to ride a scooter for several weeks I am thinking about doing a sort of "frame up" restoration on this bike. During this process, as I progress from scooter newbie to proud owner of a badass Buddy scooter. I plan to document everything on video and in a blog. I am a professional cinematographer, and former journalist. I love discovering new stories to tell, especially those which involve internal combustion and smoking tires. When I restored my Miata from "squirrel nest" to "wow dude" I did almost everything with basic tools in my driveway, and without much to work with besides elbow grease and profanity. Fabricating parts was difficult to say the least. I didn't have a lot of fabrication capacity to work with, basically a drill press, belt sander and hand tools. That has changed, drastically. I'm now a member of the local #Makerspace, so I have unlimited access to a whole array of tools, machines, resources, etc. The Makerspace opens up a plethora of customization/restoration options for this project. I can machine parts on the CNC mills/lathes, print them on one of the 3D printers, laser engrave, vinyl cut, lay carbon fiber, electroplate, weld, etc. etc. I know that having this type of fabrication capability will go a long way toward making this project amazing, but especially in combination with your body of knowledge, as well as the large array of top-shelf performance parts you offer. Knowing that there are industry pros and an inventory of killer parts an hour north is comforting. Ordering parts from Amazon or whatever doesn't necessarily cut it when your project is important and has to be done right the first time. No one at Amazon is equipped to discuss carb jetting or tell you how to fine tune your torque curve. They have no problem selling you a part that either won't work for your project or just isn't that great. I always prefer buying from folks who know what they are talking about, and care about their customer's results. I can see this project emerging as a story about the path from 'newbie with a basket case bike' to 'proud owner/builder of something incredibly cool'. The build process will definitely involve a few of the items in this video, along with many others I will discover on your website. I think that it's also likely that new parts and products could result from this project as it progresses. (I am also a design engineer.) Anyhow....I live in Colorado Springs, CO, about an hour from you guys, and while I will most likely not be riding the project bike up to your shop while winter weather is here, I would really like to reach out to you during this project, and make your products, your company and your team part of the story. Let me know if you' guys would like to chat about this. Cheers! Keep up the good work. P.S. It is possible to fit a Genuine Buddy 125 into the back of a Subaru Crosstrek if you fold the seats down. :)

The variator weights are the easiest mod for improving performance. They allow your motor to actually get into it's "power curve". My scooter was only capable of about 30-32 MPH with stock variator weights. Replacing them with slightly lighter weights allowed it to make 42-45 MPH. I usually run it around 35 MPH but the extra speed is nice to have available in case I need it.
@wadeadams2775
@wadeadams2775 Жыл бұрын
Hmmn. I thought you would want heavier weights to squeeze the variator Tighter causing a higher front gear. How does that work??

A slightly shorter cvt belt = the poor mans final drive ratio change. The belt rides quite a lot lower on the rear pulley at higher engine speeds, massively lowering the rpm vs mph. Tried it on a 139qmb engine once and with the right power upgrades, would have seen a big turn of speed, without over revving. As it was, it became more of a cruiser that couldn't exploit the engines power at higher rpm's. It never got there... Cool video.

Hello, I have a problem, I have a Peugeot Speedfight 1 100cc that recently seized up/heat seized. It was not tuned. I then changed the cylinder, piston etc. It now starts up right away, but after a while it dies all of a sudden (as if you had turned off the key) and then I can start it right up again, this usually happens when I go over 60 km/h or uphill. When I changed the cylinder etc, I also cleaned everything thoroughly, such as the carburettor, intake, new air filter, new fuel filter (there was no fuel filter before) new spark plug. I also removed the oil pump and put a metalplate with a gasket over the hole instead, I now mix the oil directly into the gasoline. Some other info that might be important. - When I drive over 60 km/h, it starts to make a noise from the variator (CVT), it´s sounds quite a lot. - When it died, I tried to start it again while it was rolling and then it started right away, but it made a noise from the variator, like something "let go" that had been seized up, like a rubber sound, maybe from the belt. - The variator belt touches the variator cover on the inside and has grinded a cut in the metal. - In the variator, where the weights are, the belt does not go down to the bottom of the wheel. - The clutch bell had turned blue from the heat. - The place where the connecting rod attaches to the crankshaft had turned blue from heat. - There was no fuel filter on it before. But i now saw there is an internal fuel filter in the gastank, can it affect the vacuum if you now have 2 fuel filters. Please help me. Regards Andree.

hi there, for the 171 bore up kit(for 150cc efi liquid cooled gy6 scooters[ex: modern honda click/vario 150i scooters]), does adding high flow oil pump is required? or can I just swap to a bigger radiator or just simply do nothing at all? let's assume I will be doing cross country touring. mostly high speed & 10hrs straight non stop rides? thank you

@@jamesturner1935 Thank you James! updates: i went with a 51mm boreup(160cc from 150). no noticeable in top speed just 5% increase. but the acceleration is much noticeable even with 20kgs rice sack loaded. it can still push the bike to 100kph with no problem. should have went with the 61mm bore(180cc). i think the honda engines are build to handle the power. but a famous local mechanic/scooter racer said any higher you can't do high compression unless you make a custom compression release thingamajig(forgot the term). because the starter will have so hard time turning the engine to fire due to high comp setup.

Nice little bit of info although spark plug wires have resistance and its not all the same and larger gauge doesn't always mean better your looking for least resistance. Do admit EFI vs carb is a hard choice now given technology available.

I got a chuckle when he said that about thicker cable giving a hotter spark. No, a thicker plug wire just has better insulation. Unless the conductor inside the wire is larger, there won’t be any difference in spark.

I am still learning about all the mechanics, but theoretically, the best things to alleviate that would be increasing airflow and upgrading the CVT (maybe big more kit too) right? Dont need a higher top speed so no new gear is required, and I dont need to start up faster so I dont think the diaphragm-less carb is needed.

Just changing the oil in a GY6 to AMSOIL synthetic four stroke scooter oil will up the top speed from 32 to 40mph in a 50cc. The mpg improves from 83 to 94mpg as well.

Not so Pro Tip: if you don't want to fiddle with the weights in the CVT just remove three of the stock ones. Remove one and leave the opposite one directly across in. You will lose top end so only do this if you're playing around on hills and in areas that require more get to the gone instead of the gone.

What assuptions? You must not know much about them and what potential they have. Majority of japanese and italian scooters have efi and that is a big difference. That and they're high maintance.
@pacman6169

@@ItsDaJax mine doesnt have any EFi , since i run a 70cc Liquid Cooled Minarelli MA Engine from 1998 (it's a Benelli 491, which is exactly that one scooter with that Malossi set the world record for 50cc Scooters). Oh and i also had a GY6 with a Big Bore Kit too , those are called Rex RS 450 in Germany but i didn't like it , especially the flimsy Stock Shocks.. Im suprised that people like those GY6 Engined Scooters in America because in Germany they're called "Baumarkt Roller" which could be translated to "Home Depot Pedal Scooter" because they were exclusively sold there and only run 20-25km/h and probably break within in a Week :D
@ItsDaJax
@ItsDaJax 4 жыл бұрын
@@pacman6169 Them being cheap is why they are popular... one reason. They are known as junkbikes here, too. They are kinda high maintanance, too. But the engine design is simple and easy to work on and aftermatket is about as strong as any two-stroke scooter. I had a Taotao Quantum 150 that ran 65mph and the shocks are shitty. Me and my at the time fiances combined wieght was over it's limit and eventually the rear shocks broke in an amazing way; the tops of both broke. The rods snapped free of their upper mounts, shot out the shock bodies, through the coil springs and mysteriously dissapeared. We pulled over and I picked the back of the bike up and it was sitting on the springs, shock rods nowhere to be found. I like them, though. I can work on them. The 250cc models are usually running a Honda 250 Helix clone engine and are watercooled. The 150s make typically 9hp. The shop I worked at, had a stock 150 that was a big 50cc/125 chassis that would pop wheelies if you yanked the throttle.

I've got a 2023 Wolf Rugby II Still a beginner when it comes to scooters. It's a 150cc GY6 157QMJ long case from what I understand. The dealer sells them with performance carburetor I think 32mm. Don't know what weights they come with in them or stock gearing. Wondering what are the best and usually cheapest modifications I can do to this specific model if you have ever had the opportunity to know one. Exhaust, air filter, final gears, spark plug, or do I need to go deeper and do a cvt upgrade, spring, clutch, roller weights, etc, or even deeper upgrade bore size and camshaft. What's the best easiest combo to boost my power? 45-50 on flats 6k rpm . 55-60 downhill 7-8k rpm . 35 maybe 40 mph uphill 6k rpm. Thanks for your help and advice!
