Who cares if they get conquered or killed while I'm away enjoying myself by raiding, plundering and raping a country which has been hostile to my new homeland for almost two centuries?" You do realize that he, as the Duke of Normandy, was the primary responsible of his people and family, don't you? That he, as a vassal of the Frank Monarch, had the duty towards him to rule and protect the lands he (or his predecessor) had granted him in s3? And what did he do? He decided to hand it over to his wife to rule as a regent for his first son who was still too young for ruling, thus leaving him as a bait for conquest and usurpation, in order to just enjoy himself for a little while, risking his own life only to fullfil his midlife crisis and then leaving Normandy and his family in deep shit. Were those actions worthy of a dutiful and responsible leader? All due respect, I think not. This praising of Rollo's dumbness here and shaming of Gisla who was right to be mad at him for these poor choices is really starting to piss me off.

Ironically enough his descendants ended up ending the Viking fantasy of ruling England. The Battle of Hastings happened less than a month after the Battle of Stamford Bridge, a battle which involved the Anglo Saxons vs the Norwegians under King Harald Hardrada. Now, the interesting thing about Harald Hardrada is that he was directly related to king Harald Fairhair, who was himself a descendant of Sigurd Snake in the Eye. So, Harald lands, his men are sleeping after the long voyage, and what happens? The Anglo Saxons under Harald Godwinson, himself of Danish relation, force marched all the way up to Stamford and surprise attacked Hardrada's force. Battle of the two Harolds ends unfortunately with Harald Hardrada and his force being defeated because they left their armor on the boats. They fought valiantly anyway, whatever, they probably would have lost anyway, but that puts a definite end to Viking escapades. Harald Hardara is called the "last Viking" for this reason. Literally 3 days after this, William the Conqueror lands at Pevensey and begins his conquest of England. Harold Godwinson had left a significant portion of his army up north and had to again force march south to meet William, who, with thousands of men and hundreds of ships, ends up defeating Godwinson's army in the field and killing Godwinson himself. So, in less than a week, both the Viking hope of ruling england and the centuries-old Anglo-Saxon rule over England, which had begun in the fifth century after the Romans started leaving, were both ended. But not truly, because William was himself of Viking blood. History is woven with coincidence and intrigue like this one. It's a tale of glory and woe.

This is not a documentary. Women in this age would never have been so openly combative against a man and disrespectful of the king, her husband, and her father, which were her masters. Women were expected and raised to be and for practical reasons were submissive. And she certainly wouldn't have had the power to shoo off a top hand of the Roman church that wielded tremendous power in this age. Remember, this is a modern show and as such they want to show "girl power" shield maidens and the like even though that's more myth than reality. Hollywood always has an agenda and desire to rewrite history, and this is no exception.

To do so would be to show tremendous disrespect for him. This also applies to when she was betrothed to him, and acted furious and with vitriol. Behind closed doors, she may very well have begged her father not to do it, but in public, she would do her duty, because the good of the ream and the good of her family mattered far more than her personal happiness.

The duality and inner struggle in him must be so hard. Even though it seemed easy to betray his people and his brother. It must pain him greatly. Yes, in the moment. He was able to get through it all because he had one goal. To be with Gisla. Now that that has happened. It's been years and they have children. He has it all. A loving wife and kids, land, etc etc. He's finally having a moment with himself. With his Viking soul. He's had years to ponder and be in his inner thoughts and that his Viking soul is still screaming within him. I liked Gisla until she got all hypocritical Christian. Threatening suicide and murder of her own children, If they were even an ounce of Viking. Even though that's a sin, in and of itself.. I wish he explained to her ins and outs of what it meant to be a Viking. That it was actually a career. At best, his children were just Frankish (Parisian? I could be wrong) and Nordic. I wish he explained the religious beliefs of the Vikings. I doubt she'd listen but tbh, I just wish she took the time to ask. I would want to know everything about the man I love. I wish she was more understanding of his struggle instead of being defensive and threatening. She should have accepted him for all of who he was. However, I do understand that those were different times and being tolerant of other people's beliefs and ideals, wasn't a common thing. She should have just let him go be a Viking one more time so he could get it out of his system. I doubt it would have eliminated his need for his culture and heritage, but it would at least silence some of his Viking soul. I felt like after this trip. He knew that he was done with being a Viking for good. I like to think of it as going one more round with the boys before he bites the dust. I really hope that he tried to fix the marriage when he got back.

You are right: you're absolutely right. But please, if I may, let me make you reflect upon this: at this point, Rollo isn't a "mr Nobody" as he was in Kattegat, but he is now the _Duke of Normandy_ , and, even more, he had been proclaimed the _protector the realm_ by the emperor himself, then the _saviour of Paris_ and _the hero of Frankia_ by his own wife who happened to be the princess of that kingdom. Rollo has now very important responsabilities upon his shoulders: in primis, the safety and well-being of his duchy and his family. And what did he choose to do? He chose to _leave it_ to his wife to reign it for his still child heir (the future William Longsword; history is full of child monarchs who had been usurped or worse killed. And Rollo left him and his siblings in this danger: what a responsible father!) in order to, as you said yourself, let the "Viking" out. Wise move. Perfect for a man who decided to become someone of importance in a land with a different faith (Christianity) and a different culture which, for what I have seen it, did not contemplate leaving for raidings. For this (as I have not seen Rollo asking his liege lord permission to leave, as do not forget, Rollo is not only Charles' son-in-law but his also _vassal_ ; and I doubt the monarch would have give it for such a fool thing like raiding and then, even causing a war, if the city which was attacked found out that he was his vassal), and for finding out that his vassal still _openly_ practised his _pagan ways_ , the emperor might rightfully take his lands away from him and then kick his ass out of his reign and back to North legittimately. And Rollo would totally have deserved it. Or worse, his lands might have been conquered while he was away: do you remember what Jarl Borg did with Kattegat? Well, Rollo should have remembered it very well before sailing away to perils only useful for his "viking ego". Now, I'm not saying that I comdone what Gisla did here: I agree with you that she had been hysterical and unreasonable (s4b did her character so dirty), but still she was right in not wanting him to leave: she should have reminded him of the duty and responsability he has towards them _his family_, Normandy and the emperor. I may understand that Rollo is torn by this duality you have mentioned: but it is also true that _with greater power comes greater responsabilities_ , and when you are the leader of a country and therefore of many and many people (especially in such difficult times like the Middle Ages), willing or not, you have to put aside your inner persona and think about your subjects' safety first: exactly like Ragnar, when he had accepted to become a "mercenary" for Ecbert and Cwenthrith in order to obtain his colony in Wessex, and like Charles, when he had had to give his daughter, whom he loved very much, to Rollo in marriage, did. Rollo here, forgive me, was not a responsible leader, and he deserved to lose everything he had achieved at this point.

@@cristinademartini1284 I appreciate this take. Sorry I'm only now seeing this. Anyway, you're right! It was irresponsible for him to leave like that. As cheesy as the "great power comes great responsibility" has become thanks to Spider-Man lol. It is definitely true and fits this situation. As someone with an aversion to Christianity, I do see that despite his inner struggle and the need to want to be Viking again. That part of his life is over. He gave it up and should have just completely accepted it. I'm honestly glad that he actually lived through this journey and came home to his wife. Even with injuries. I know a lot of the "Vikings" was basically historical fiction mixed with legend. But I'm glad the writers didn't do something weird and stupid. Like kill him off.

@cristinademartini1284 2 жыл бұрын
@@lunatica7473 Gisla didn't ask him herself to fit in her world: at the beginning, she legittimately did want nothing with him, because he had sacked her city and people she tried to protect until the very end and she was scared of him because of the reputation of the Vikings being violent and rapers. It was her father who made a treaty with Rollo which the Norse has accepted; so, if he wanted to become someone of importance in that land so different from his for faith, culture and laws, he would have to adapt himself to these, just like Athelstan did with the Viking world, or Gisla herself should have done if she ever had to follow him back to Kattegat. Sure, Rollo did it also because he wanted to impress her and to make her accept and love him, but that was on him: Gisla did not force him to do nothing: maybe I agree with you that she may have been a little childish and petulant when asking the annulment, but at the same time I can't really blame her: she was obliged to marry the man she saw hurting her people before her very eyes, she wanted some agency on that matter and, I believe, she did it also because she wanted to get revenge on her father who had forced her into the marriage. "She never understood him"... probably, and I totally believe that she shoud have advised him not doing that idiocy of going raiding with heathens by reminding him of his duties (and he, as the _duke of Normandy_ , had many and very delicate and important ones: that's something many forget) and not for the motives she had enounced in this series; still, may I ask you, who is the most selfish one here? She, a responsible princess and duchess who knows very well what ruling involves, or he, a man who had just become the leader of a newborn duchy and the responsible of the life of many people, in primis his wife and children, and then he decided at some point to leave it for a "last adventure" with the same people responsible of the sacking of her own and therefore risking his life and his reputation and of his family, as the emperor believed he had been converted and his son William could have become the next emperor of West Frankia (in this series, not historically)? Well, I don't know what you'd answer, but considering all of this, I'd say Rollo.

Yeah, like he was away for just a weekend: he had been away for weeks, if not even months. And, as the episode of Jarl Borg and kattegat in season 2 teaches, a "weekend" away can cost you your earldom/dukedom and your family. And Rollo should have learnt that lesson very well by now. Rollo may need some time to remember the old ways, but he failed to understand that normandy, his family and their safety are his responsability (since his heir is still too young to rule the dukedom independently). Moreover, how Do you think the Frank emperor, Rollo's feudal lord, would have taken one member of his court leaving a very important part of his reign alone in order to practise pagan ways openly? I don't believe he would have taken it well, therefore Rollo risked to disgrace himself and his family. Gusla may have exagerrated here, but she qas right in forbidding him that stupidity of his.

This treaty created the Duchy of Normandy.3 In the late 10th century, the chronicler Dudo de Saint-Quentin wrote that Rollo married Gisela after her conversion to Christianity upon his ascension as ruler of Normandy in 911. According to later medieval sources, Rollo treated Gisela cruelly. His father sent two knights to act as his support in Normandy, but both were executed by hanging on Rollo's orders. That's fine (it is in fact speculated that the real Rollo never stopped believing in his norse religion even after gaining Normandy): but, leaving your newborn duchy to your wife to rule it alone for your children still too young to rule it independently and in the danger of being attacked and invading while he was away (like kattegat was by Jarl Borg while Ragnar was away in England in s2) or worse, ruining their reputation and yours at the franks' court, since they believed you converted and therefore they would never tolerate you practising pagan ways openly? That's the dumbest political and diplomatic move a ruler would ever do at these times.

That was a mistake, i agree: she should have reminded him of his big responsabilities and what he might have lose if he was going to leave for that "reason". Many tend to forget, but he is the duke of Normandy: the stability of his lands and the safety of his family and people depend on him. For how responsible Rollo had become in s3 e s4a, this is a huge mistake he was making.

While she should have respected Rollo and his culture more (a culture he chose to abandon, let's not forget it), Rollo shouldn't have abandoned his newborn duchy, people and family for a raiding, which wasn't a custom of the Franks. This plot has been written in a very bad way for both her and him, but i'm sorry, I stay on gisla's side: i agree she should have advised him against this "idiotic" choice of him not bounded by fear and disgust for his culture, but if I may remind you, it was his choice to leave his native family, land and culture... gisla didn't ask him to, her father did by offering her and Normandy. Rollo could have refused (although, if he did, i'm 100% sure he would have been killed along with his men in the viking camp). Aside that, with great power comes great responsability: Rollo is now the duke of Normandy and therefore the responsible of the safety of these lands and its inhabitants. And what did he do? He chose to leave it for weeks or months to plunder a city of Hyberia (a kingdow which, surprise, had a bad history with Frankia, the Emperor's (ie Rollo's lord) reign) thus, if the Moors had found our that he was a Vassal of the Frank sovereign who plundered them, they could legittimately declare war against Normandy and Frankia. Or Rollo might have come back and found nothing, as his lands could have been conquered and his family (Gisla and their children, including his direct heir) murdered. All of this because he was missing his old viking life and his nephews etc. So who was the selfish one here? I'm sorry, but I say Rollo.

Your arguments are all valid, but, if I may, let me remind you that Rollo is not just a bloodthirsty viking as he used to be, but he is now the _duke of Normamdy_ (seriously, why do few people remember that?) and, as such one, _he is the primarly responsible of his lands', his people's, but above all his family's (ie Gisla and their children) safety. Let me remind you what happened when Ragnar had left Kattegat for going to England in s2 (but at least he had good reasons, unlike Rollo who was just missing his old life and was getting borea with his domestic and aristocratici life): _jarl Borg had conquered it and threatened his wife and children_ . Therefore, something similar might have happen to Normandy and his family while Rollo was away enjoying himself. Perhaps Gisla exagerrated, but she was right not to wanting him to sail away with the same people who had sacked hers.

Sure, he had been a viking all his life, i understand it, but he is now a man with great and important responsabilities, and many things could have happened while he was away for fun. If by saying "chose right" you meant all of this, then yeah, i guess he chose right.

But i agree she should have tried to convince him not to go and leave them and his duchy for such unreasonable reasons not blinded by her "fanatic" (if we want to call it this way) hate and disgust towards his culture, but with more sensibile and pratical reasons, such as his duties towards them, the emperor (his feudal lord: many tend to forget about this, but Rollo is now a vassal of the Frank monarch) Normandy and, more importantly, that his direct heir was only a child, therefore easy to overthrow and be killed, and so his lands may get conquered or he could have been stripped of his titles and lands and be exiled.

Sure, he is a Viking, therefore he still worships his Gods in his heart - fair enough - and their children have also Scandinavian blood in their veins, but have you forgotten that by accepting the deal with her father, he became not only his son-in-law but also a vassal of the Franks sovereign, and i don't think the Frank monarch would have been pleased with him - a Duke of a very important region such as Normandy - leaving it, his people and his family unprotected in order to raid once again and without his permission. Rollo hadn't been away for days, but for months. Many things could have happened while he was away: either his lands were conquered by some ambitious nobleman and therefore his family killed or the emperor could take back ands strip him pf the lands and the titles he or his predecessor (if Charles is dead at that point, which i think it is the case)gave him and then legittimately kick his ass out of Frankia. With great powers come greater responsabilities, and since he accepted Normandy, it is him the direct responsible of its safety and well-being; think of what happened when Ragnar left Kattegat with Horik for England in s2: Jarl Borg conquered it... but at least Ragnar had a good reason to sail away, which was raiding but moreover searching for a chance to gain prosperous lands for his people: that was a good cause and Ragnar there was being a responsible chief, since he was thinking about his people's well-being; did Rollo think about that when he sailed away with Bjorn? If he did, very little, since he left them as baits for conquering and he got nothing of importance for the Normans from Al-Andalus, for what i saw, but i could have missed something. About not letting go of his roots, traditions etc.: sure, you are right, and in fact Nomans had characteristcs both Norse and Christians, still it remains the Vikings in Normandy fused with the local population and by many and many years, they became Christians; but, aside that, what Rollo did in s4b was further foolish and stupid because he went raiding while he was a man of great political importance in a land whose different culture and traditions did not contemplate raiding, correct me if i am wrong; so, by acting that way, he not only jeopardized his own position at the frankish court (for they believed him converted to their religion; if he was sincere or not it doesn't matter, since he freely chose to stay in Frankia, a land with its own rules and faith, and if i may remind you, in Middle Ages did not exist the concept of Freedom of Worship (from both the pows: the Pagan one and the Christian one more; therefore, unwilling or not, if you want to stay in another country, you have to abide those ones if you want to survive and maybe even live peacefully among the local people) but worse, even his wife and children's one, as his father-in-law had no male heir and thus there was a high possibility that his first son might have become the sovereign of frankia. yes, it didn't happen historically, i know that, but that' is another matter. Do you see now why Rollo was naive and stupid by acting like that, just because he was missing his "old viking life"? About Gisela being disrespectful and dramatic: yes she was, i don't deny it and the thing of killing her own children if they were Vikings (and here, they were Normans, ie half-vikings half-franks, but still..) i found it very out of character, since she is very much protective of the people she loves (ie her father in s3, Rollo himself in s4), but she was right not wanting him to sail away with people who once sacked her people and maybe would try to assasinate him for what she knew, since Rollo turned his back on them. And who would have been left to look out for him away and for their first born still too young to rule Normandy? Her. With all the terrible consequences i enounced above. So she has all the rights to be mad at him for leaving. My point is that both of them were very wrong: Rollo for leaving Normandy for such unreasonable reasons and Gisla not advising against this choice of him with more reasonable thinking: s4b did both of them so wrong. If i had been rude i'm truly sorry, it wasn't my intentions. and if what i wrote was unclear and not understandable, if i may, i would like to suggest you reading the comment of Citizen Len under this video itselfs: he was more precise and concise than me on this matter.

Sure, she may be selfish and controlling all that you want, but does it not ring into your mind that, as the Duke of Normandy, Rollo should be the one controlling his lands, his people and his family and keep them safe? And what did he do? He willingly went with heathens to pillage a country with which her one had been hostile for centuries and he risked not only his place and reputation at the frank court, but also the one of her and their children. Exactly, Cristina. She IS the true Christian in their marriage, that she puts the welfare of her country and people above personal wishes.
