There are three broad classes in Norse culture. Thralls (slaves and servants), Karls (freemen), and Jarls (nobles). Huskarl means "Freeman of the House". The name is meant to indicate that the Huskarl is not a slave, but a freeman bound by oath. Rovik is also a freeman/karl, merely a landholding one. Thus she is the Husbondi (Master of the House). Also, the Norse had a severe taboo against harming women (so much so that in one saga a woman hits a man in the face with a bag of 200 silver and he orders his men to kill her, and they refuse to do anything to her because harming women is cowardly.) and divorce was perfectly legal, as long as cause was given, so Hilda would actually likely be praised for killing her husband.
@Phelan6669 жыл бұрын
lonewolfM16 Jesse didn't watch enough Vikings.
@Robert3999 жыл бұрын
lonewolfM16 Presumably killing a spouse would require a lot of justification though, even if it was only allowed one way? Also, presumably a man could defend himself if attacked by a woman.
@ffbotha9 жыл бұрын
Robert R I don't think he could to be honest, not by harming the woman. Fact is that the scenario that Jesse described would have been very unlikely in Norse society, because all that would have been required was for Hilda to tell anyone about what her husband was doing to effectively get him killed. Beyond this though, women didn't just command a lot of respect in that culture, they also held a lot of power. This is because if my memory serves (been a while since I've read about this so I could be wrong) only women were allowed to own land. So a man could never actually own a house, or land, of his own. It would always have been the property of his wife (all single men lived in barracks I think) and divorce was fairly easy (though I'm remembering that only women could actually initiate it, but not sure if that's right either).
@ffbotha9 жыл бұрын
Frederik Botha Or rather, it would have been considered very dishonourable for a man to attack a woman, regardless of the reason for it.
@Robert3999 жыл бұрын
Frederik Botha right ok, I was more asking if a man's wife came at him with a sword, presumably he can defend himself. He's not expected to just stand there and die.

"What was his name?" "Karlsbad." "His father's name?" How the hell did Jesse not say "Karlsdad" right there >->
@Leivve9 жыл бұрын
Huscarls are basically the viking equivalent of knights, a single individual (Normally a warrior, but with huscarls there can be exceptions) who swears loyalty to server their lord; normally in exchange for something like food, drink and housing. Unlike knights though, if a huscarl's lord is dishonorable or in some other way proves to be a bad leader/chieftain, they are free to leave and find a different lord.

Steven, will they go on summer raids? they had to keep themselves going up there, trade would be central, so makes sence that there were ships that could go raiding, with the whales and everything too it would make sence that ships were availeble.

So, I've been trying to introduce the R&D crew to some awesome games from Sanguine Games. The creator of Sanguine Games told me that when you offer someone something for free and they say maybe later, they don't want it. I'm just disappointed that out of five seasons R&D has had three shows now that feature the Apocalypse engine instead of something else.

Why is it exactly "awesome" that men play female characters and women male characters? You had to get your "modern way" into a place and culture that opposed your own view? Iceland had it right.
