Vince, three things for you: 1. The screw on top of the radiator tank is NOT a fill screw. That is an air bleed screw. It is used to allow the air to escape and prevent air locks when filling the cooling system. You warm up the vehicle to operating temperature with the coolant reservoir filled to the "hot line", and crack open, but DO NOT REMOVE the air bleed screw. When the system is purged of air, a small amount of coolant will bypass the threads of the screw and that is when you know the system is purged and can retighten the screw. 2. For the transmission and what we normally call "passing gear" or kickdown, as you call it, you need to verify if that automatic transmission has a "lockup" torque converter or not. If it does, when you are in 3rd gear at highway speed, the converter should be in lockup. When you then apply full throttle, the converter should unlock, and if your speed is low enough, the transmission will downshift to 2nd gear. At highway speeds, you will only feel the converter come in and out of lockup, which most people confuse as being a kickdown or passing gear. 3. For the speedometer being inaccurate, this is normally caused by a defective speedometer cable, a dirty or sticking speedometer gauge, or a faulty vehicle speed sensor gear, normally housed in the tail section of the transmission where the cable connects to the transmission. In this case, I would suspect either a dirty gauge causing inaccurate readings, or a bad speedometer cable causing your issue. If you end up remove the gauge to clean it, be very careful doing so, as the speedometer gauge uses an inertia connection to the cable to smooth out the readings and does not have an internal physical connection to the cable where it meets the gauge. make sure to unscrew the cable from gauge as soon as physically possible to prevent damage to the inertial movement in the gauge. A lot of times the cable will go bad internally in the cable jacket and get "spun" inside the jacket, causing a bad reading. This can typically be diagnosed by watching for any "bounce" in the gauge as the cable spools up the inertial movement, binds up, and releases again, but not always. sometimes simply lubricating the cable inside the jacket can bring an inaccurate gauge back in to alignment.

On really old cars with carburetors kick down was often done with a vacuum line on the carburetor going to the gear box, or to a vacuum switch. On modern cars with fuel injection kick down is initiated by communication between the gear box and the injection ECU. The first systems would trigger a wire when the engine demand was high enough and RPMs were low enough, then the gearbox would figure out if it had a gear to switch down or not. Modern systems use computer communication over the CAN bus.
@WOFFY-qc9te5 ай бұрын
Yes you are correct, I think Vince should check the vacuum modulator on the gearbox and the vacuum lines to the intake manifold, The modulator is about £35 nothing special. It fails from fuel vapour condensing and perishing the diaphragm. the mechanical link is the kick down override. As I posted several weeks ago it is a janky linkage that defies understanding.

One of my first cars, an old police car from a police auction, that had a quarter of the millage of any other car being sold because it had a spark plug broken off in the head. Got the head machined and put back to find the transmission was shocking sluggish. My mechanic brother took it to a parking lot and beat on it for 15 minutes, accelerating and breaking repeatedly, and it all opened up and started working beautifully. Then I had it serviced with new filter and fluid.

Hi Vince, great work on the Roller. The screw in the radiator is a bleed screw you open it just enough to purge the cooling system of air otherwise you could cause the engine to overheat. Always top up coolant and then run the engine. Rev engine to low rpm's enough to bring engine up to temp and the Thermostat opens and cooling fans kick in, if coolant in the cooling system is low, it's at this point you will see coolant in the overflow tank reduce, top up if required to keep it in the recommended level as indicated on the tank. Any air in the system, you will see some coolant and bubbles come out from the bleed screw. Think of it like you're bleeding air out of a radiator of a home central heating system. You know all air is purged when there are no bubbles and just fluid coming out. Not too sure about the kickdown but in my experience to engage kickdown you need to let off the accelerator and quickly press down on it again a little aggressively. With the speedo I recommend you use your phones gps to get an accurate reading then you can see exactly how much out of whack the roller's speedo is. You can just use something like google maps, put in any destination route and on your navigation screen you'll have the speed readout. Generally manufacturers calibrate the speedo so it is actually anything from 3-5mph lower. So if your speedo is show 20mph you could actually be doing 16mph for example. GPS speedo is most accurate. I bought a standalone GPS LCD speedo from good ol' Aliexpress for 14 quid and it's quite good. But I have mine only because I don't like the speedo layout on the lexus!😂

Easy way to fit star washers is to use a deep socket of the appropriate size to force them on, the washers your purchased probably did not fit as well as you would of liked is because you are using metric star washers and the ones on the car originally would have been imperial. Same goes for all the other fixings on the car. CT-1 is a hybrid polymer and not a silicon hence why it bonds and seals even when applied under water, expensive but good stuff for this use case. Yes the module you pointed at when looking at the throttle linkage is the cruise control unit, the plunger you took out the floor is just a damper for like you said to tell the driver they have reached maximum throttle travel whilst at the same time cushioning the throttle pedal from banging on the floor causing the unwanted noise of metal on metal. I think there is nothing wrong with the kick down, due to its age it will have limited gears to shift to and is geared for comfort not performance. We have checked the engine oil haven't we? All the fluids will need changing to be honest but that is for another day. Coolant temps for internal combustion engines go to at least 100 degrees Celsius but as they are under pressure when in operation this lowers the boiling point of the coolant so in reality coolant temps fluctuate between 100 to 130 degrees Celsius depending on engine manufacturer and specified range. Out of habit I would have put a few turns of PTFE on the threads of the temp sensor but if it isn't leaking and you are checking your coolant level regularly then leave it alone. You should be using deionised water for your coolant mix but if the system is already contaminated with tap water then it is pointless really, the cooling system needs to be completely flushed and filled back up with deionised water and anti freeze. Filling through the bleed screw is the slowest way to fill the coolant system, use the coolant reservoir. Fill the coolant reservoir to max and then run the engine with the bleed screw removed when coolant with no air bubbles starts to flow out the bleed screw port replace the bleed screw. Keep an eye on the coolant level in the coolant reservoir as it will go down as it tops up the system, keep topping the coolant reservoir back up to max keep running the engine for at least twenty minutes with the heater on in the cabin. Hold the engine at 2500 RPM for at least ten minutes to force the coolant to circulate further and to speed up the process of the thermostat opening. Keep feeling the top hose until it starts to get warm, this way you know the thermostat has opened and coolant it now circulating the entire system and not just the engine. This will take at least 40 minutes in total. There is usually additional bleed screws on the heater hoses before they go through the bulk head/firewall which help to remove air from the heater matrix, you can remove this bleed screw also when you have the bleed screw on the radiator removed. Your explanation of what a thermostat does is pretty much correct, I wonder if those electrical connections on top of the thermostat housing are for a NTC or PTC heater so the cars ECU can control when the thermostat opens and closes, a little advanced for this year of car but this is common place now with the ever increasing push for lower emissions engines are ran hotter and hotter to achieve lower fuel consumption and emissions figures and getting them hot as quickly as possible is imperative to this. This leaves very little margin for error so it is very easy to overheat an engine today compared to when this car was built, you don't even get a temp gauge nowadays only a warning light which more often than not illuminates right after the engine is cooked. Or those electrical connections on top for the thermostat housing are for switching the cooling fan, I would suspect Rolls Royce also used an off the shelf thermostat so if you do take it out I bet you can get it much cheaper as it's a generic part just like the temp sender, they normally have the opening temperature stamped on the thermostat which makes matching up easier. For £135 I would expect the whole thermostat housing which being made mainly out of plastic probably is a good idea seeing its age as they crack and warp. I recommend changing a thermostat every five years so I bet this one is well over due and is probably defective which would also tie in with the engine taking a long time to warm up if it is stuck open but also running the heater will cause the engine to take longer to warm up. Easy to test the thermostat, just place it in boiling water and you should see it open up if it is not already stuck open. Careful spraying penetrating oil on rubber seals and it can react with certain types of seal and turn them to mush, silicon spray is better choice. To see how accurate the speedo is download a speedometer app on your phone that uses GPS to measure your speed, these are actually more accurate than your speedo, generally from factory speedos are set 2 to 3 MPH LOWER than the actual speed the cars is travelling. This allows a little tolerance for error and better to be a little under than over. I would think the speedo is driven by a cable on this model so before jumping to the instrument cluster check the cable and pinion gear where it connects to the gearbox or differential are in good working order as they wear and stretch over time. If it is electrically driven then the sender will either be on the gearbox or differential, workshop manual is your friend again, when we had issues with speedos they were sent out to a specialist for repair if it needed cluster work but you need to check the wiring, grounds and sender is within spec before condemning the instrument cluster.

I'm pretty sure that transmission is a GM Turbo 400. Hopefully it's the same units we have in the US and not some Rolls version. The electronic speedometer sending unit should be bolted into the passenger side of the transmission near the tail end. You would change the speedometer readings by changing a plastic gear that attaches to that sending unit. The kickdown should be an electronic switch usually attached to the throttle linkage. I think you'll have to do a lot of research to see if Rolls made any changes. Good luck!

Hey Vince. Great video as always! For the speedometer issue, I suggest that you check the speedometer gauge it self. I've never worked on a silver spirit speedometer, but I've seen the same issue on some Japanese made cars with electronic speedometers. They have capacitors inside, and the capacitors leak. When they leak, they can cause 2 problems. Either the speedo reads wrong, like in your case, or the speedo doesn't work at all. I've seen that problem on many 1993-1997 era Corollas. Might be a good idea to check your speedo. As far as I know, there's a bit of a process involved in taking the speedo apart, as I think it's pressed sealed (just like my Lada 2105) Greetings from Costa Rica. Hope this info helps.

Very cool fixes 👍 Coolant here in Finland is categorized as a hazardous waste which must be recycled properly. Interesting problem with the speedometer. I forgot if this car has ABS brakes, it could get the speed data from ABS tone rings with sensors on the wheel hubs, or from transmission, especially if it's without abs. I remember in my old Mazda 323's and Nissan Micra, the speed sensor (mechanical, altough Micra might've had electronic one as it was from 2001) also worked as a dip stick for transmission oil level, but of course these cars were front wheel drive and manual transmission, without abs brakes.

Ah Vince the 3 Rolls Royces I used to drive had the RR badges in the middle of the wheel trims that used to always stop the right way up. one had the plate Bi6TOP. The amazing funny story was at the van company I worked for I had to be upgraded on the insurance to drive the rollers and Ferraris, so my boss on the phone with me to the insurance company relaying questions; "any convictions?" Nope, "any accidents" Nope, "any medical issues" Nope.well my boss replied yes "he has to take viagra but we don't talk about that" as it was on speaker phone you have never heard a workshop laugh so much !

I’d love to see you restore a Mini. That was the first car I ever drove. I used to get driven to school in my dad’s Mini Moke too.

Great video, I'm loving the series. If the speedo is wrong, would that mean the mileage is also wrong?

The correct key FOB is the one issued when new. It is a hard rubber bit that will not scratch any of the surrounding facia. That is why you see so many scratched switchboxes.

Vince the speedometer will be 3 things, sensor on the gearbox, dirty connection or weak magnets/ muck dragging in the spedo head, Easiest start is striip down the speedo head, give it a good flush with brake or carb cleaner, if no good then look for dirty contacts at g.box sensor, test sensor. Best of luck with that one though, you can chase your tail without the modern obd2 diagnostics

Vince, just an idea but there are speedometer apps that you can download and then do a side by side compare so you would be able to adjust. I had to use one in one of my vehicles during the winter time because the needle would stick in cold weather. All the best.

Hi Vince, here is some info from an OLD forum post: All 1977 onwards cars have an electronic speedo. It is very common for the odometer to stop working. This is caused by a small internal gear that perishes. (the guys was selling it on ebay in 2010, but seems to be not active anyore)

Hey Vince, distilled water will keep the system clean, the ph neutral and avoid electrolysis (metal parts /engine corrosion and scale built up). Another tip, use your phone's GPS for a speedometer, you don't need to check for speed indication cameras.

I believe your car has a GM turbo hydromatic 350, or 400 transmission. If so, there are 2 inputs that give it kick down signal. 1 is called a vacuum modulator. It needs a vacuum signal from the intake, and the second should be a kick down switch on the throttle cable, or pedal. Rolls could have modified these things, but take a look. Could be as simple as a vacuum pipe being unplugged, or cracked. Dave

Been a while since I've been under the bonnet of my Brooklands, but IIRC the black two-pin plug is the sender for the engine management temperature sender, the other ones with two separate connectors are temperature switches for fans etc. Think there can be up to 4 of the switches depending on spec. PS. The temp senders are the same as generic ones. The oil pressure sender, however is unique to RR/Bentley/Jaguar

The wheel not being centred in the would not have been improved if Dunlop Denovo runflats had been fitted. Whatever size wheel/tyre is fitted it will of course be off-centre. The geometry change is the culprit. Btw, when removing the hub caps always place a steadying hand on it to avoid it clattering onto the ground and scratching the edge of the trim - I cringed when yours hit the ground! Well done on the temp gauge.

We had a Vanguard that was in for restoration, first road test the wheel trims sounded like pebbles in a tin can. The same setuo with star washers but we fitted rubber grommits over the grommit pins instead of silicone. Less messy of you want to paint the inserts

CT1 is brilliant stuff - used it to repair cracked shoe soles. Great flexibility and adhesion and not too nasty to work with. Comes in lots of different colours too. Couldn't you fix the original star washers by squeezing flatter with pliers?

It could be a blown fuse causing the speedometer to not register properly, that's the most common reason. Best to get it sorted whatever the problem is as it's illegal to drive with a faulty speedometer. Don't they test them during an mot? Really enjoy all the videos you do

My TomTom satnav shows my speed. I have found it to be accurate when passing those speed indicators at the roadside. Perhaps you have a TomTom or know someone who does. Perhaps other satnavs have a similar function. I really enjoy your videos.
