Your reaction to this film is a reminder that we do not need to watch a cinematic masterpiece to strongly connect to a film. There can be films with noticeable flaws but have aspects or scenes that we strongly connect to nonetheless, and we might not have any explanation for it. When that happens, the flaws are still there, but they seem to matter very little. Others might not like the films that we connect to, and they may even have their reasons, but in the end, I doubt that matters. Great job! 👍

The principal is Linda Hunt, a wonderful, marvelous actor who came to real attention playing a boy in "The Year of Living Dangerously". Often portraying a person of great moral and emotional strength, under-estimated because of her appearance, she has a lovely line of dialogue in the movie "Silverado" after demonstrating the thought: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWPEgmCHa8Zml7s Pamela Reed plays the delightful "wingman" Phoebe. That's a good rating system! I love this movie and have probably seen it 25 times over the years. But on a recent watch, I noticed that John isn't a very good detective. He assumes that Mrs. Sullivan's husband is Zach's father, but she doesn't say that. She calls him "my husband," and John rules out Mrs Sullivan/Zach based on that conversation, when she easily could have remarried after leaving Crisp. It would even make sense that if she had been married to Crisp her next marriage could be abusive as well. It's actually Phoebe who rules out Zach Sullivan when she learns he's not related to Crisp.

Don't forget Short Circuit, too! Kindergarten Cop, The Goonies, and Short Circuit were all set and filmed in Astoria. A few other movies (e.g., TMNT3, Free Willy) have used it as a filming location, but those three are the "holy trinity" of Astoria films for me.

Yes, the Goonies house is just a couple blocks up the hill from the elementary school on the east side of town. It was a slam dunk, a crowd pleaser. So, it's no surprise that you enjoyed it. It was directed by legendary comedy director, Ivan Reitman. So, forget about Rotten Tomatoes. I enjoyed you enjoying this. :-) In years past, we said the pledge of allegiance every morning at school. Some only say it once a week and it seems many not at all. As far as Arnold just staying and becoming the teacher.....well, you need to get a college degree and now, also a master's degree in order to be a teacher. You even have to be certified in a specific area like grades 2-4 or K-3 etc. To be a substitute you need at least an undergraduate degree. That is until the advent of Covid. In some places they've changed the rules and anyone who passes the background check can be a substitute. They make it tough---so, no, Arnold couldn't just decide to stay. Excellent wrap-up. It is a fun, feel-good movie.
