@@jrobbins707 But I most certainly am, lol. I kept my best units in reserve, untouched, and supported the assault with my armored Legions, in the initial push. Afterwards, I formed the front like on the left flank inside the city, supported by Apollo, and Nico went on the attack on the right flank. It was an awesome battle, haha.

Pilars dont brake, they bend so the enemy can not thow it back. It should hit the enemy, or stick onto his shield, so he can not use it anymore. Think about the waight of a pilar on the shield. Its nearly useless then.

The pilum was designed to bend after impact to make it difficult to remove from shields so they had to be discarded. But also so they couldn't be thrown back.

wanted to say the same thing, by lodging into the shield and bending the softer metal point, they were neigh impossible to get out of the shield much less throw back and they weighed down the shield so the defender would either have to let go of the shield or be weighed down in combat, either way their effectiveness in batlle was affected by it. Its a very underrated weapon.

One of my favorite things about the siege mode in the Total War games is that they almost seem to be in stages. Depending on the map, how many layers of walls and such, there can almost be whole other preparation stage inside the walls, where the attacker’s set up for a push with depleted forces and the defenders set up the remnants of their army for one last bracing, or continuously harass with cav, forcing action.

One of my favourite moments in a battle is when an enemy force is fighting one of your units, and they don’t notice until the last second before a wave praetorian guard smash into their backs and break them. Love watching it everytime.

As for your comment around the 19:00 minute mark regarding the Pilum: Pila were designed so that the long iron piece of the tip would bend under the weight of the shaft so it would make the enemy shield useless. The shaft would get stuck in the ground, and the pilum would be extremely difficult to remove. So most enemies of rome would throw away their shield and would suffer a heavy disadvantage, since the romans had one of relatively few armies that used armor. Other tribes would use a shield as protection and nothing else.

to answer your question about pila the tips were meant to bend on impact so if it got stuck in a shield since it would bend they would not be able to remove it easily and the added weight would make the shield to awkward to use thus forcing them to drop it
