For a long term Time Team watcher this episode confirms how how certain people act, Phil is very anxious to start digging almost the same time he 1st arrived at the site in this episode, while Mick takes a completely different view of a much more measured and slower approach. I would guess that most times they would compliment each other, but at times Mick becomes rather fustrated at the rush to get things under way, without in his mind doing the proper planning on a site.

Yep. That’s how I feel about archeology here in Australia. The aboriginals were very clever at living off the land and not wrecking habitats but it leaves no traces except the occasional midden of oyster shells.and after you have dug a couple of those it soon grows boring. I’d love to have been born in the UK and had the opportunity to dig over there… or around the Med… ahhh the stuff dreams are made of.

Definitely makes one wonder what future archeologists will be complaining about in our contemporary digs 🤭 It's a significantly different kettle of fish in many ways though, as the science itself didn't definitively exist in the early 1900s - it was largely a rich man's hobby rather than an academic field.

Thank you Teresa! I wish the channel would put that information in the description. Right now, I have to rely on how much hair Tony has on his head to date these!

(39:10) Fort? But no hobnails found and if I've learned properly from watching all of the Time Team episodes (happily, several times over!), hobnails would be ubiquitous finds at a site containing a Roman fort. (Sir Tony has also improved my vocabulary.) I don't know....

The type of fort you're thinking of is a military installation, for the purpose of defense. In this case, it's an enclosure *maintained* by the military, so a hobnail wouldn't necessarily be found. As they pointed out, this place was a worship center, so while it was technically a fort, its purpose was for morale not for defense.

Roman soldiers were often buried with their boots, so the hobnails are found in graves.

Doubt my question will be seen or even answered now, so many years have passed, but has anymore archeological digs been done on this site to expose more of the buildings? I'm always curious about follow-ups to these finds. Are the rest of the buildings exposed? Do they get some kind of marker or protection? I am beyond fascinated and curious.
