If your bench is sliding, fix a 2 x 4 or 1x2 underside of bench a few feet or a meter out, and have it butt up against the house, it wont go any where then! Great videos on the use of the bench! Like all your work holding methods. The wedge a great and useful tool! Thanks for sharing through this media! Steven Columbus Michigan

Another solution to the bench moving is to put a board between the stretchers and add sand bags/rocks/etc on top of it. I find the added weight anchors it. Great video I like your pegs and will give it a try. 👍

Another great video. Top tips. I've just built my first Roman workbench following Rex Krueger's design, and on a hard surface I throw down a couple of scraps of carpet underlay to stop it slipping.
@DW_woodworks
@DW_woodworks 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. That's a great Idea for anyone that has some used or spare underlay. I think it would work good, maybe even better than a yoga mat.

A complete pleasure watching you working on that bench. I'm not going to build a Roman bench (I need my bench for more than woodworking and need to be standing), but pegs and wedges can be used on taller benches too. Also, why the hell didn't I think about using a yoga mat!?! I'm currently working on a portabel bench and planing is a nightmare! But a yoga mat might help! Thanks! And thanks for the book!

Thanks very much for watching, I appreciate your time. I think a yoga mat will definitely help you. There is a taller bench in the book, maybe that may be some help to you.

Thanks for the ebook and thanks for the warnings about back issues while face planing-I was concerned about certain activities aggrivating back and knee problems while using the low bench since I am accustomed to using a taller bench. jimbo

I recently finished making a roman workbench from an elm log that was in my back yard. I was thinking I needed to put in a twin screw vice, but this video has convinced me otherwise. Thanks! I really like your L shaped notch accessory. Do you use any other appliances with the bench? Have you adapted using a shooting board on the roman workbench? Bench Hook?
@DW_woodworks
@DW_woodworks 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I think between the part 2 and part 3 videos, I cover everything I use. I don't really use hooks and such but, a hookless (flat) shooting board will work again a dog, or on a non slip mat.

These are some excellent videos, thank you. From a left hander could you safely put a notch on both sides of the so you can cut both left and right handed? or would it comprimise the benches strength? I was also thinking of an idea of putting the wedges, pins and dogs on one of the cross struts where you recommend to put the planes? (i.e. an additional small piece of wood for a second crossstrut making a gap for wedges) Can not wait to make one as my work shop is tiny and this would be ideal.
@DW_woodworks
@DW_woodworks Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching I appreciate it 👍. If you put two notches in, I'd put one closer to the front legs, and one closer to the back legs, so there on a diagonal and away from each other. You could have a go with the wedge storage. I had an Idea to make a simple fanny pack of leather, permanently fixed to the legs. It's so easy to lose/misplace pegs and wedges, and spend 15 minutes looking for them 😂

Question for you: how would I hold a 1/2" thick piece of oak thats about 4"x4" high and long without a vice, while it stands on edge on the Roman bench? I need to shave it with a spokeshave, possibly drawknife, and then plane the edge.
@DW_woodworks
@DW_woodworks Жыл бұрын
I'd probably attach it to the notch accessory with clamps if you've already cut it to length. Usually with small pieces I leave them as long as I can, for as long as I can. This way I have more material to clamp. So you could easily work on one edge, then cut it to size, maybe struggle with the other edge, but the notch accessory should take care of that.

@@DW_woodworks thank you very much. I was scratching my head on that one. I love the thought of a viceless workbench, and so your build is top of mind. Here's another excellent example of how to hold various things on the workbench. This may be interesting - search, "18 Work Holding Tricks for the Sculptor's Roman Bench" here on KZbin. Cheers
