If it weren’t for the vast change of pronunciation differences of French from other Romance languages (Dark Ages to Renaissance), it would sound more similar to Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian…

The song "Chevalier, Mult Estes Guariz", interpreted by Jordi Savall, they use Medieval French, and the phonetics are practically the same as Medieval Portuguese. It actually sounds like a Latin language.

In fact, the changes are even more recent, occurred at least during the 18th-19th century in bourgeois or legal circles, especially from Revolution, etc...then it gradually spread to the population. Before that, French was very similar to other Romance languages, whether it's pronouncing all the letters or rolling the R's. However, this does not prevent several regions of France from having kept their respective accents, from their regional languages.

@@cyberverse9141 These are achievements of the Revolution, that is to say a phenomenon of the progressive Parisian (bourgeoisie) seizure of French territory, especially since we know that the regional languages were hunted down by the Convention. The important differences with today are in the distant past. For example, the diphthong "oi" (which is phonetically written "wa") of "Roi" (King), "moi" (me) or "toile"(cloth), was for a long time, until 1789, pronounced " oué" (like the Quebecois/Canadian French today), with the roll of R. When the royalist emigrants returned to France during the Restoration (thus after the Napoleonic period), they were very surprised to find that the word "Roi" was now pronounced "rwa" (as today, and not "Rroué"). This pronunciation was that of the people of Paris.

As a Filipino, learning to speak Spanish is easier than French because Spanish words are spelled as what they are pronounced, unlike French which is no different from English.
