The most humiliating enlargement in EU history. It can hardly be called enlargement because Schengen does not apply on land to these two member states. All EU countries can freely transport goods, Bulgaria and Romania are not allowed. And these two members have been part of the EU for 17 years. This is called discrimination. They threw a bone. Here in eastern Hungary it's still taking forever to cross. There are ethnic Hungarians from Romania who chose to move to Hungary whilst continuing to work in Romania after they joined in 2007, but the hopes of quick and free movement is still but a dream. The crossing between Csenger and Satu Mare is known to be a nightmare for example. Some people elect to own 2 cars, one on the Hungarian one on the Romanian side so they can cross on foot instead as that's slightly faster.

Usually the border is understaffed. If they would add more personnel, things would go much faster. And also those containers are designed stupidly. When you are finished with the Romania customs, the car behind you has to wait for another minute until you are also done with the Hungarians, just because there is no space to drive forward. Whoever designed those containers should be fired. I started to think they do this on purpose, to create frustration in the population so that political pressure is building up. Schengen is a topic that sells good for politicians. P.S.: No politicia is daring to telling the truth about the crime problem of Romanian citizes abroad. In Austria the largest group of foreign prison inmates are Romanians. In Barcelona, Milano, Rome, Berlin, everywhere are Romanian pickpockets, thieves and burglars (there are enough Hungarians ones too, but ya, Hungary is already in Schengen).

Concerns about an influx of illegal immigrants is not xenophobic. It makes sense to have that concern, and Bulgaria is bordering Turkey. Right-wing leaning parties is on the rise across Europe for better or worse for a reason. Even in Sweden, which was the most tolerant to non-european ocean of immigrants. I'm happy about them joining Schengen by Air border though. Congrats to them.

Romania and Bulgaria now have the worst of both worlds. Since the majority of their trade and cross border physical goods transactions happen overland, nothing really will change except maybe a few ego boosts. However, they now have to compete with their EU Schengen counterparts for tourism, since the main advantage of going to those 2 countries was for those of us on the visa free 90/180 Schengen, if we wanted to stay on the continent longer and reset our Schengen 90/180 day clocks, we could easily pop over to Bulgaria , then Romania. Now, that's over. I hope it works out for them. But for me, it looks like I 'll be giving my extra time in Europe and money to their non-Schengen Balkan neighbors and Turkey....

After COVID you can't cross the border without confessing to border police all your plans and if the don't like your answers they can make you a full inspection including giving PIN code of your personal phone and after all that humiliation they can still refuse you entry. not sure if you have ever been anywhere abroad or you are just generally ignorant, but you know that people have documents - those people that you don't want, they can pass the border anyway cause they have ids and passports - the only problem with not being in Schengen is that you stay on land borders for a few hours and the trucks stay there for a few days or can go even for a week it's about the time you spend at the border, not passing the border itself regarding the air border pass, when you buy plane tickets you have to buy them with an ID, so proabably the people you see and don't like they went to other countries and will go to other countries anyway no matter if there is a border check or not
