As an army, Rome was unmatched on the field in its day. Yes, Carthaginians led by Hannibal bested them a few times, but using Roman tactics and equipment. The best way to beat Roman formations was as described: hit and run. Teutoburg, anyone...? An honest question, though...wouldn't the Viking steel be of superior quality to the Roman? There was centuries of advancement in metalworking, but would that figure here? Would Viking axes simply destroy Roman swords?

Actually the rear Roman ranks would pass their pilums forwards to the front ranks, and the Romans would keep throwing their pilums at the enemy as long as possible if the enemy was still in range. That is totally a devastating tactic often forgotten and thought as only the front ranks would throw their pilums. Wouldn't you order such a tactic yourself if you were a Roman general ??

Mid-video. Rooting for the vikings, but knowing it's a low chance
