Very good video, thank you. The Orastie mountains were full of fortifications, some of them old from the time of Burebista, so 150 years before, the road network or rather the lack of them was thought precisely to help the defenders, the Romans had to fight hard to overcome all these.

Decebalus' decision to attack and provoke the fury of the Roman Empire again the 2nd time is always fascinating to me. And it seems his men were on board. The Dacians must've really believed they had a shot of coming out on top? Or they just really hated not being fully independent to the point of suicide. But to decide to challenge Rome again at its height after facing the greatest and so massive army ever assembled once already is impressive (or crazy). Perhaps the first war was not as one-sided as the column leads us to believe, especially sparing the king and not annexing the barbarian land as a province immediately was pretty unprecented from Trajan. But that's maybe because he wanted a strong buffer state like you said in the video

The Dacians were noble people. I guess they decided that it's better to die in freedom than live in slavery. Interestingly, this sentiment is echoed in our national anthem. "Murim mai bine in lupta, cu glorie deplina, decat sa fim sclavi iarasi, in vechiul nost pamant". I am proud of both our Roman and Dacian ancestors.

It's complicated. Dacia was the first time a sense of unity connected these tribes. Burebista was barely four or five generations before. It will probably be explained in the next video, but the first war effort was mostly warriors in whatever flavour they came, while for the second war, no civilian bowed out.

Thank you for making these outstanding videos. I especially enjoy learning the finer details of the campaign. Almost everyone else glosses over that stuff. It's incredibly interesting to visualize the difficulties of the attackers and defenders, the logistics, how strategies change with new developments, and the sheer manpower involved in the Roman war machine at all levels. Lusius Quietus is one of those names I associated with Trajan's later war with Parthia and then the Kitos war, but I didn't realize he played such a prominent role in Dacia as well.

About the map, Costoboci were placed roughly where the Carpi are on the map. As for the Carpi, there is a post conquest entity in what will be the western Bastarnae lands and eastern Dacian lands beyond Carpatians. Costoboci lands showed there were mostly in Dacia but given the borders of Dacia Province there is a possibility that some tribes were probably rulling the area. Also the direction of the main roman attack might be from.a different location and Blidaru was probably more secure than the religios capital.

The Citadel of Banita was the place where i grew up. In 2010 you can still see remains from the dacians there. And the fortress itself it's on a big hill, roughly 75-100 m high. Nearby it's a cave and a the mures river. I love how it all comes to place, and makes sense now learning all this.

If I may humbly suggest a topic for a future video: I think it would be great for a video to take us through a prominent roman temple and temple complex, a specific one would be ideal, but even a more general overview of these physical spaces that were so important in the life of Rome and its citizens would be useful. We're told temple complexes held critical religious, political, and social functions across society, and held not only statues and offerings but living quarters and troops. wealth, offices. A video that can show what one of these magnificent places likely looked like and how it functioned with the community, would be very interesting.

The triumphal arch of Emperor Constantine I the Great. It was raised in 315 AD. and is in Rome. The impressive monument commemorates Constantine's victory over the Roman emperor Maxentius, achieved on October 28, 312, in the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in Rome. It is the largest triumphal arch that survives today and the last great monument of Imperial Rome. The most impressive parts of the Arch of Constantine, visible from a distance, are the 8 statues of the Dacian commanders. The presence of the Dacians on this monument as well as the sarcophagus of Constantin-Elena's mother - is due to the Thracian-Dacian origins of the emperor. Constantine was Moeso-Dacian. Romania is ancient Dacia. The Dacians and the Getae, our ancestors..

Galerius' mother was of Roman origin even if she was born north of lower danube. Her name was "Romula" which is the feminine version of "Romulus", and means "Roman woman".

Regarding the Thracian versus Dacian ancestry, the lines are blurred, because they likely had similar if not identical blood. Even now, there isn't that much genetic difference between lower and upper Danube populations.

The Dacians were not exterminated. Becoming Roman citizens, they entered the administration and management of the empire. Roman Emperors of Dacian origin. ---Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor in history. It was born south of the Danube, in Naissus in Dacia Mediterranea province of which Naissus was the capital (now, on the Serbian territory), then Moesia Superior. His father, Emperor Constantius Chlorus, was from Naissus. In 325, during the reign of the council of Nicaea, Naissus attested a bishop called "Dacus". Dacian presence south of the Danube, both before and after the conquest of Dacia, is undeniable. So Constantine was exactly a Moeso-Dacian. ----Galerius Maximinus. Galerius Valerius Maximianus was born in the year 250 (245 according to some authors), in the village Romulianum of Dacia Ripensis not far from the city of Sardica (now Sofia). His father was a Thracian and mother Romula, was a Dacian, refugee for some reason, north of the Danube, from Dacia Traiana in the south. According to Lactantius, (250-325) Galerius king has said his Dacian origin and was declared an enemy of the Roman name. He proposed to change the name of the Roman Empire to Dacian Empire, moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Thessaloniki. ----Regalianus..great-grandson of the king Decebalus. ----Aureolus. Byzantine historian Zonaras says about him: "Aureolus was of the Getae country, later called Dacia, the first, pastor.. ----Licinius Roman Imperator, was born in Moesia Superior, in a peasant family from Dacia. ---- Maximinus II Daia -was born on 20 November AD 270 in the Danubian region as the son of a sister of Galerius a Dacian Emperor of Rome.

I mean, there is about a 1500-year time gap between Italians and Romans. That's quite a long history to cover. But to sum it all up, Italy has had a lot of bad luck when it comes to military campaigns. Perhaps this is why they are remembered so unfavorably. It was also a relatively young country, which may explain why it lacked experience in military matters.

I'm descended from Dacians. We're not gone. We improvised, adapted, overcame. Some of us have forgotten the langauge and speak Slavic descendant languages, others Romance languages, but we're here, hiding in plain sight. You just have to look into the genetic studies to understand we werent exterminated.

An uninspired title. Caesar was much tougher in Gaul, he made many victims and did not "exterminate" the Gauls. At Trajan's death, there was a big uprising in Dacia, so they were nowhere near "exterminated". There were enough Dacians left to be enlisted in the Romanian army and sent, for example, to Britain.

the Dacians weren't exterminated, there were still 3 great dacian revolts after the roman conquest. The dacians existed as non latinized people at least untill the 3rd century as Galerius was recorded to have had a Dacian mother and Thracian father. they were eventually assimilated, but not exterminated

After many years of studying Romans and how they thought about the world i have realized "western civilization" as a whole adopted their way of thinking big time. We still to this day think of different cultures as barbarians and not worthy of life in the same time our western view as well as Romans view of "others" has deep roots in the culture of extreme fear and paranoia of being "invaded by barbarians" while in the same time westerners inflict heavy damage to everyone who is different not realizing its self fulfilling act of hate and disgust towards others that brings back the heat. West has never dealt with this extreme fear of others just like Romans, therefore eradicating someone makes them feel safer. In my view there is no worse coward in the world then someone fearing of others men children, we can see this in endless colonial wars as well as modern newest example of middle east tensions i cant name that country or my comment will get deleted, but we know who i talk about.

But the west was invaded countless times after the romans, the arabs, the mongols, the vikings. You think they adopted their way of thinking but it was not, it was an existential crisis. If you look at the map of the Roman Empire you can clearly see how it lost half of the territories to “barbarians”, like egypt, north africa, anatolia etc. Even England became Anglo-Saxon, Galia became Francia and now France and so on

Even Mongols that were known for cruel treatment of enemies did not exterminate someone, because of hate and racism, but they rather were principled with someone that broke their moral code. And instead of destroying entire enemy they incorporated them with enthusiasm. China that was by far the most dominant power in the Asia and in 5 000 years of defending against "barbarians" even building such great walls did not develop need to exterminate others. But Rome did. Germans did. English did. Americans did. Spanish did. French did. Israel did. Westerners have developed ideology to support fear factor and racism. Europeans went on such killing spree around the globe that until 19th century there was no place on Earth left untouched by their guns and need for subjugating "others". There is a reason all continents, but Asia and middle east speak European language.

In Notitia Dignitatum the Dacians are attested in c. 400 AD in Scythia Minor still i.e. "Conferat ergo lector clipeos lanceariorum seniorum (V 2) et iuniorum (VI 7) , Iouia- norum Herculianorumque iuniorum (V 3; 4) et seniorum (Oc. V 2; 3), mattiariorum iuniorura (Or. V 7) et senio- rum (VI 2) , Dacorum et Scythorum et (Sarmatarum) Re- giorum (VI 3 ; 4 ; 8) " While comparing the different emblems of the legions it mentions "the Dacians, Scythians and (Sarmatians) of the regions". Because Sarmatians are mentioned as well this is proof that Dacian and Scythian doesn't stand for the inhabitants of the Roman provinces of Dacia (Aureliana) and Sctythia Minor but actual ethnicities as there was no Roman province named Sarmatia so it can only be about ethnicity. Another proof that the the Dacians weren't entirely annihilated is that Constantine the Great gained the title Dacicus Maximus in 336 AD while campaigning North of the Danube.
