This video covers the humble origins of the legion that will later be named "the most effective" by Emperor Nero. The 14th Legion will gain a series of titles along the way, and will soon become known as "Legio XIIII Martia Gemina Victrix"; Mars' victorious twinned 14th Legion. Mars, being the Roman God of war. The 14th Legion is also one of the longest surviving Legions of Rome, loyally serving the empire for over four hundred years.

In part 2, The 14th will completely change its fate and win victory after victory, until it will one day be named the "most effective legion" by Emperor Nero, and win other titles, being later known as: "Legio XIIII Martia Gemina Victrix", Mars' victorious twinned 14th Legion (Mars is the Roman God of war). Just like they’re doing with House of the Dragon now by rushing through the story and even blatantly changing it to make it cheaper to produce. HBO should never be the standard, it’s like you people forget why they cancelled Rome. Because that company is known for refusing to invest a significant budget in to a project. They’d rather cut corners and profit anyhow off a popular title. Similar to Disney with Marvel in the last 5 years.

Hi there - sorry for the silly question, but the banner in the opening has 'XIIII' on it for 14. From what I vaguely recall of Roman numeral rules, we can't have more than 3 of the same symbol in a row, so 14 would be XIV wouldn't it? If XIIII is a valid historical usage, please let me know!
@igorsajn6246
@igorsajn6246 2 жыл бұрын
XIIII is totally correct. Romans used both additive (IIII) and subtractive (IV). In middle ages IIII was even prefered to IV, especially on clocks (because of symetry and IV resembling the name of pagan god Iupiter).
@wm.courtney9114
@wm.courtney9114 2 жыл бұрын
The rule you quote is actually a more modern convention. It was common during this period (ca. 100 BC to 200 AD) to use IIII (versus IV) when indicating the number 4. Two examples of which I am certain is IIII (4) and XIIII (14). 90% of my knowledge of the Roman Empire is directly related to the various legions and of these two numbers, I am certain. I have no idea as to why it was done.

Awesome videos! Have seen some of them now and only have one wish.. For me all understanding of history and events starts with timeline. This gives a bigger picture of things and helps in understanding occurrences and whats more important than others and how they played a roll in aftermaths. I would love if you could provide a timestamp in one corner to remind us what era and time we are talking about.. It would be awesome if it was dynamic but a 50 year like 50BCE-0 would also be good! I came to think about this when I saw the video of the first legion, but post this comment in your newest video in case it make it more likely to be seen from you.
