Running Time: 2 Hours, 10 Minutes
JOSEPH LEVINE presents A PAUL CZINNER Production
THE ROYAL BALLET with
RUDOLF NUREYEV and
MARGOT FONTEYN in
ROMEO And JULIET
This film is the famed ROYAL BALLET production of “ROMEO AND JULIET”. This historical performance stars MARGOT FONTEYN and RUDOLF NUREYEV as the quintessential stage lovers. It captures the greatest dance partnership of our century at the peak of their careers.
FONTEYN and NUREYEV’S performance has been critically hailed as “perfection in movement which epitomizes the freedom that lies beyond technical mastery. It expresses itself as poetic lyricism.”
ROMEO AND JULIET features the music of SERGE PROKOFIEV; a work which has been recognized as the first great full-length ballet score since TCHAIKOWSKY’S classics. The choreography of KENNETH MacMILLAN is acknowledged as the reason for the ballet’s successful transfer to the film medium. JOHN LANCHERY conducts the ORCHESTRA of the ROYAL OPERA HOUSE COVENT GARDEN.
It is a film for lovers of ballet and romantics alike.

This goes beyond dance. There is a sensuality between the leads. It as if they are living their roles and not just dancing them. They obviously really respected one another artistically and came alive together when dancing.

Don't care what anyone says about the age difference, the injustice to Lynn Seymour, or the superiority of Ulanova as Juliet, that was one hell of a bit of theatre! - An exquisitely touching rendition of an eternally dramatic story. I think even WS himself would have been pleased!

Utterly wonderful. My mother was in the same ballet class as Betty Kavanagh (Lady Montague) - my mother was star pupil until Betty arrived, who then took her place! My mother was unable to go to ballet school, unlike Betty, but they remained friends and my mother was able to go back stage during performances to watch from the wings. Later on, after she married my father and we children came along, we were all able to go to many performances and saw Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev dancing together. Pure magic.

Wow what an amazing story! You must've had so many wonderful experiences n memories. Your mother sounds like a beautiful person. The fact that she didn't hold any resentment for the woman that took her place n remained friends with her speaks volumes about her character. Thanks for sharing. 😊❤

That they loved each other outside the theatre played no small part in the beautiful performances they blended together in. Their initial meeting for work had two hugely gifted people eagerly learning from the other. Joy of joy that we can see these videos especially if we never them live on stage.

What a performance! Dame Margot is 47 here, but I never once didn't buy her as the 14 year old Juliet. This is something only someone really familiar with ballet would comment on, but she has an unusually good "working turnout. And what a partnership. She is so refined, and his wildness really works with her polish. Thanks so much for posting this!

When I was 16 and 1966 I saw Nuriyev and Margaret Fontaine dance. What do you call flying and floating in the air and wings? It was their dancing and acting especially that was magical. Since then I’ve seen everyone Alvin Ailey, Baryshnikov, Gelsey, Kirkland. No one compares to Nuriyev and Margaret Fontaine. When I danced after that, I always do know that guy that guy was dancing on another planet from them.

How did he spin so fast is a good question! Is he changing his ‘spot’ as he is moving directions so quickly? He definitely wants to make it hard for anyone else to duplicate. Dancing on his toes made him go faster and also was dangerous to risk.

@@maryrosenblatt6741 yes. Interesting perspective.....also. I got a good look at his BARE feet in a photo i.came across. He had the most unusually shaped feet. And longest toes I've ever seen.....probably an advantage....He also had an extraordinary powerfully thick neck. And wide broad strong shoulders of. A man.of his size. (Only 5'8"). Not that tall...... gave him enormous upper body power......but as far as his head and vision to "spot" on every spin.....that's just amazing. How it didn't mess with his equilibrium..or cause him nausea.....

I remember seeing this film in the theatre when it was first released. I was 19 and enraptured. Four years later I saw this duo in person at the Metropolitan Opera in Swan Lake. I have seen many Swan Lakes since then but I have never seen a performance of Odette/Odile that could equal Fonteyn's. She was the swan. By then she was in her 50s and maybe not as physical as one of today's young dancers, but she made up for that by her exquisite movements and delicacy. I saw a lot of Nureyev in the 70s and never really cared for his solo work, but as a partner I have never seen anyone to beat him.

What I always wish, though, is to see the dance as choreographed-which was for the proscenium. Most of the line and ALL of the blocking (meaning the actual choreography) is LOST in shoots like this.

In other words, I want to see what the choreographer and dancers made, not what some dance-ignorant editor feels sadly compelled to do.

The problem is I'm watching Nureyev and Fonteyn not Romeo and Juliet. There is no way that I can believe Fonteyn is 14 year old Juliet. MacMillan choreographed the roles on Gable and Seymour and they are so much more believable. Reply

Actually that woud be amateurly. Obviously you cannot recognise genius. She was the dancer Nureyev wanted to dance with!

Gosh do I have mixed feelings about this one. I feel like I am peering through the big names to see the dance. Fonteyn is irrefutable, but hers is not the lightness, excitement or abandon of a 15 year old. Even the orchestra seems a bit en retard. I’ve often wondered what if R & J were staged unabashedly on “older” dancers (or actors) with the youngsters portraying their disapproving elders. I think THAT R & J would SELL. And PLAY!

Old woman? Your perception is so distorted??? There WERE other & younger women, dear... Margot was so good that she outshone them! She and Nureyev had such star power that it forced less talented dancers to leave town!

@@rmp7400 Absolutely! And I think Tomas meant 1973! Fonteyn was not that old! For I they are Romeo and Juliet.

commennts here are pure non sens because most haven't even seen the first Romeo--Juliette coreo Noureev at Palais des congrès Paris ( 1985 ) ; in 1966 Fonteyn was 43 y old her career was at the end in 1959 ; for me h'm honest j saw Fonteyn as Aurora ( coreo Hightower ) in 1970 at Marseiille Opera : it was a calamity .
