I have some ripe fruit on my Romeo Cherry Tree. I thought you might be interested in my thoughts on theses cherries as I taste them for the first time. I will also compare the taste of the Romeo cherry to a Manchurian cherry that I've grown for several years.

I planted a 5foot juliette cherry tree this spring. The fruit was ready by July, and was actually nice tasting fresh. I plan to plant a Romeo as well. Thanks for showing Canadian cold climate gardening, coming from a zone 2b area in Canada it's very relatable.

That is great to hear. I’ve enjoyed the sour cherries (from the older tree) for baking, but I’d really like fresh eating fruit. The Romeo fruit was quite tasty. I look forward to the Juliet and Cupid. From what I’ve read, they should all ripen at slightly different times which would be nice. I used to live up in Saskatoon (zone 2) I have found that up there gets a lot more snow cover (plant insulation) than I get here. Even though my zone is warmer I still grow many of the same perennials as before because of winter heaving. I need to mulch much more after the ground freezes to protect plants here.

Your Romeo cherry looks nice and healthy. I planted some Juliet and Cupid cherry trees in spring of 2020. They've made it through one winter and looking healthy so far. I hope I will have some cherries to harvest in the years to come!

Garden is look great girl. When living in Coastal Oregon we had 2 cherry trees. One red & one black. ( that is all the name i know ) The blue Jay birds got most of them most years, but one year we had both as the same time. The red ones were a little tart, but the black ones fruit was bigger and vey sweet. I fell in love with the ones from Washington State called Rainier Cherries. Yummmy.. Yummy.

There are so many great cherries for a fairly wide climate range. The biggest problem can be getting them before the birds do. I know my old sour cherry was always a hit with the birds. I’d be out picking as soon as they could be picked so I could get my share of the lower fruit before the birds got to them.

When your cherry trees get going you'll be over run with fruit. I have a mature Sask Carmine Jewel pruned to a standard and picked 12 4litre pails this year. It ripened so early. And I like mine a dark purple colour to eat and harvest. I love the romance series too, but can't handle any more cherries .lol.

I'm amazed that the birds didn't grab them yet. I have been trying to grow cherries too. I invested into panels of mosquito netting and covered both trees. Got a pint plus of cherries this year. The netting really helped keep the insects and birds off. I did a video on it but never got it posted. Maybe I should post it. It's great that you get enough for pies. Love Cherry pie. 😏

I can’t tell you how many birds I saw land in that little tree. Every time I was sure the berries would be gone. The birds are very busy filling their babies with insects right now and I have peanuts in a nearby feeder. I guess that has kept the cherries safe.

When I had the larger tree I was lucky and could get a good harvest off the bottom and let the birds eat the top. I must feed my birds too well with seeds and nuts. A lot of people have commented on the birds eating their cherries.

Really cool to see. I can't wait to get some fruit trees in our yard. We have experimented and grown some up for others but with unpredictable life have not been a serious grow. Thinking we will lean that way more in the future. Would love fresh fruit like even the more sour cherry in the yard. Great comparison, info and video. Thanks for the share!

Thanks. I wish I had focused a bit more on fruit trees when we moved here. I’m trying to find some that I can squeeze into my space now. Having fresh fruit is a great treat. My parents have a lot of berries on their farm so I’m lucky to be able to go pick buckets of berries there. I trade for some of the vegetables they have trouble growing.

I have 2 cherry trees the size of your first tree, but unfortunately people say there are no cherry trees producing here in Brazil, because there aren't enough chill hours. I hope I will be able to see some fruits in my trees some day.

I am amazed the birds hadn’t been eating them. I placed a netted bag around a couple. Perhaps it made the birds nervous to get too close? I saved the top two for my daughter. She loves cherries and always wants me to buy them. I wanted her to taste what I could grow in our yard. She was impressed.

I bought a SK Carmine Jewel Cherry last year but it got infested with some kind of beetles (lots of black tiny bugs). There were lots of cherries but they all fell on the ground. How do I protect the tree from these beetles this year? Do you need 2 cherry trees for pollination? Thanks.
@PrairiePlantgirl
@PrairiePlantgirl 2 ай бұрын
You only need one tree for pollination. I’m not sure how to deal with the beetles. Usually these trees hold onto their fruit with very little drop.
@trollforge
@trollforge 3 жыл бұрын
My Manchurian Cherry has yet to produce any fruit. It came with my Siberian Apricot... I don't understand how a Cherry is a pollinator for an Apricot... My Romeo only produced about 4 last year, and the damned robins got them all, this year it set about 80 fruit but as soon as they showed any red they were gone. I don't recall what the other small Cherry is, it might be Juliet, but it hasn't produced yet, the Montmorency Cherry produces quite well, but the damned robins... I'm sure it had more than 500 start to ripen but we got 4... and this year the late frost got the blossoms...
@PrairiePlantgirl
@PrairiePlantgirl 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t sound like you are enjoying your cherries. The birds and the frost can destroy what looks to be a good crop. I thought I’d lose mine to frost this year but they must have been pollinated already? My neighbour put up a purple Martin house this spring. Purple martins are extremely territorial and I think I have less other birds around. The birds that are here seem quite happy in another neighbour’s Schubert chokecherry trees these days. The smaller berries might be preferred over the larger ones.
