Very real… most of us have not been through this tragedy of Southern Cal. But we all have something to overcome. Family counseling is a must to bring you back to reality after all this is over. I've been in a similar situation to this. It's staggering how much guilt you feel when you feel relief. The area of Australia I live in had some pretty insane flooding a few years ago, and my house survived with barely any damage, whereas literally 4 houses down from me lost everything. It can very easily cripple you if you let it, so please don't hesitate to take the time you need to do what you need to do to survive. Your mental health is absolutely the most important thing!!!

Something else I thought of: Do you have a pump and sprinklers system for the pool? You know, for fire protection. That's one relevant project you could film. Another is pruning back all your plant growth. Another is packing all your outdoor furniture away into the garage. Do fire safety things to reduce fire establishing on your during ember attacks. As well as making area safer for fire fighters, i.e., reducing trip hazards...

If I may add, trim all dead plants. Take away all death/dry debris in and around your house. And if you are able create a small fire lane between you and your neighbors. Just like they have in big forests, but smaller. And please know that your anxiety is still valid. Yes you have a home, but that doesn’t mean you can’t/are allowed to be stressed.

I saw a father and son on the news who saved their home and neighbors homes by using a pump and fire hose. The dad got it just a few months ago. Very wise!

I think that when the fires are finally under control and Californians - specifically those in L.A. can take a breather, something that people can do to be proactive is to install a sprinkler system on their roofs and around their houses. The water can come from the swimming pools if people have them and be activated in an emergency situation. They can have them set to go off automatically and intermittently so that people can safely evacuate their homes without wanting to stay and try to save their homes. I also agree that trimming the shrubs down around your house and take down trees that are close to your roof line will save homes. I used to live in an area in British Columbia, Canada that was prone to wildfires every summer and the fire department would come around every year and give tips to residents on how to protect their property. One of the key areas was to clear all shrubs and trees that are close to your house, you want to create a fire break. I know the shrubs and trees look so pretty, but if you are in an area that’s prone to fires, a house that survives a wildfire is much prettier than shrubs and trees.

MaCenna , I'm 72 ,a life long Californian & I've never experienced this strength of winds in my life. Anxiety through the roof..I totally feel ya! I'm in a foothills area and in the past was evacuated in 2003. Other times I had evacuation warnings. But my PTSD is almost like your nightmare. The morning we fled from our dream house (*2003 not this fire!), which we had only been in a few months, I woke up and opened my shutters in the bathroom and saw a completely red sky! It came on so fast, similar to this fire. Wind driven. I'm still prepared here because more winds are expected. This total destruction is shocking and heartbreaking. I'm grateful to be safe and trying to be cautious. It's a lot for anyone to process, and we understand that you need to take care of your family. Videos of projects are hard to dive into. I've felt that uncertainty today, too. Just keep yourself as calm and healthy as you can, and when you feel like life is not upside down , we'll all be waiting for you! I'm pretty sure everyone who follows you, young & old, loves you and your wonderful positive energy . Our house survived but seeing those flames so near by was terrifying. Thank you for the prayers for all. Two of my best friends live right in Palisades and lost everything and she has a 1 year old and another baby due any day now. My heart has been breaking for them and everyone. I am so grateful the church I work at is supporting 4 churches in the area to provide for the families in their areas who need housing. It has been a beautiful thing to see the Church provide and care for these people.

I've just been so full of anxiety over the fires and the devastating result! I live in Kansas, but I grew up in Canoga Park. Here in Kansas, the farmers burn the wheat fields after harvest and in the spring. It scares me to death. My husband doesn't understand why I get so freaked out by the fires! I can't imagine your stress levels. With hurricanes, we know when they will be over and we can plan or escape before they hit but fires are so unpredictable. My heart breaks for LA.
