If you're 30 miles west, and maybe even across the water, you may as well be talking a different language. I mean, I'm *from* Glasgow, but even to me, depending on where the other Glaswegian is from, they could be as clear as day or talking complete gibberish. The difference between someone from, say Bearsden, versus Ruchazie, is huge (or "shooj", or even "f*cking ginormous").

I could only understand my lovely Glaswegian friends when they were a bit drunk. That slowed them down a wee bit. I’m from Cork myself.

@@corkwijk9 a couple of fellow Glaswegian friends of mine both spent some time in Ireland in their late teens. One went to Belfast, but I think the other was in Cork; she went to stay at a convent, exploring the idea of becoming a nun. Both came back sounding, to me anyway, like they'd been born in their respective temporary homes -- after only a year! The change in the girl in particular was astonishing. She had left with an especially thick Glasgow accent, and came back sounding like ... well, at a welcome home party, one of her actually Irish cousins said she sounded like a _"camogie-playin' culchie"_ I think it was. Hilarity ensued all round, so I assume it was in jest, but he did get a cuff around the neck from my friend for his trouble.

@@pamelastorer8570 People sometimes think a 2nd language is “free” for children. Not only does it take hours and hours of work and practice for the kids, but even more work and effort for the teachers. This is doubly true if basically no one around you is speaking the language regularly. Teaching someone a 2nd language is like an unpaid part-time job (and one that many people are not good at, given most know little about teaching). This is the main reason it’s not passed on.
@pamelastorer8570

@@SimonFrack Rubbish. I am talking of conversational language - and I have known a number of people who are bilingual, because one parent at home spoke their own native language. I've known fluent French, German and Spanish speakers, who grew up in English speaking countries with one non English parent. I'm not talking of paid lessons, grammar etc, just conversation. I had pretty conversational Welsh as a kid, just from the other street kids I played with while spending summer there.
@SimonFrack

@@pamelastorer8570 Well that depends what level on “conversational” you deem to be acceptable. But even learning a first language requires literally years of work.

Wtf? Padma Lakshmi and Sundar Pichai grew up in India. MIA grew up in Sri Lanka. Of course, they would speak Tamil. Not sure how well Aziz,Mindy,M Night Shymalan speak Tamil but they grew up pre-internet. The only people I know from that era who speak Tamil well while growing up in US/UK did so because their grandparents lived with them, or more commonly, their parents were incredibly rich and could afford yearly trips to India during summer break for Tamil immersion. Romesh’s experience is actually quite common for the era he grew up.

Most ancestors of the current generation of the Sri Lankans are from India. Some Indians went for trade in Sri Lanka and then, some settled in Sri Lanka. During the British rule in India, some Indians were taken to Sri Lanka by the British.
