What I love about this episode is that it shows that Kirk needed to be the captain without making Pike seem lesser. They both did the right thing yet destiny has it that Kirk’s way happens to be the best in this situation.

Aye. Yellow alert means the ships defenses are engaged, but not to their maximum potential as power is flushed to weapons Tom put them into Hot Standby. It’s essentially a ‘Just in case’ mode. Red is better but draws more power requiring extra power generation. At least that’s what I remember from Starfleet tech manuals.

How long can a crew keep at high alert status before they get tired? A few hours, maybe half a day. They could be waiting ages to see action. The other shifts need to rest I’m case you have to rotate crew out.

This episode did a great job of showing how menacing the commander and crew of that Romulan ship were. In the original series’ episode Kirk and his crew largely dominated the fight, but here Pike, even though he had significant combat experience, was out of his element.
@brianllllll
@brianllllll Жыл бұрын
Not aggressive enough against an enemy with technological superiority. When you're fighting someone with better ranged tech than you (in this case being invisible and giant plasma ball) your only hope is to turn it into a knife fight and relentlessly chase so they can't use their advantage. The political views also differ; In TOS Spock concludes if it is an invasion the ship can't make it back to home base. This alternate universe Spock is far more stiff and original series like than the SNW Spock and Pike didn't ask him the right questions. Pike was the wrong person Kirk was the right person for the times.

Kirk challenging Pike that he flinched for a moment in combat in a nice "pot calling the kettle black" moment. In this reality that is how Kirk got command of the Farragut, after he hesitated on firing upon the cloud creature, believing that flinch lead it to attack the ship and kill half the crew and the captain, leading to this Kirk to assume command of the vessel. Probably why Kirk put his foot down like he did, not wanting Pike to experience the same mistake that he did.

No. Don't be silly. The writers of this show never saw the original series, nor do they care about it. In balance of Terror, a major plot point was that the Romulans had NEVER been seen before and communicated with for the last 100 years despite having a war with them. There was that huge big deal that Spock and the Romulans had common ancestry. Quit pretending that the people who write this garbage care about what was written before.
@TokoGT
@TokoGT Жыл бұрын
@@fuzzywzhe Their similarities was a big deal when we were first introduced to the Romulans in the 60s, and the bigotry drama was centered around one officer who isn't a part of this version of events. That region in history had already been explored quite well, this more focused on the 'what if' path than completely retreading a classic to squeeze in newer options. It was never stated in canon that the Farragut was a Constitution class ship. So finally showing it as a new original design to avoid confusion between the two involved ships I have no problems with.

@@TokoGT I'm just pointing out, the writers of this show don't care about inconsistencies. It's just another dumb stupid pew pew kaboom series. This is nothing more than one action scene after another, and then the writers flub in some BS to tie them together. Who cares? It's a more than 50 year old franchise, it's time to put it to rest at this point. People apparently want mindless stupid entertainment and if they don't, well too bad, the writers are ONLY going to produce mindless stupid entertainment.

@@fuzzywzhe Your comment is pretty cringe. As someone whose a huge fan of The Original Series, I found this episode to be the absolute golden one of Strange New Worlds. Kirk acted exactly how TOS Kirk would had acted, and Pike is a lot closer to his self-doubt he expresses in " _The Cage_ ". The only time your criticism here really rings true is in the episode with the Gorn. That episode is godawful and made zero sense except they were trying to make the Gorn be like Xenomorphs.

@@Zeithri This episode may very WELL be the best in the new series. That's not saying too much at all. I just don't care anymore. Since the JJ Abrams film in 2009, it's just senseless, violent, and stupid. It doesn't matter what is produced now or later, I won't even waste my time looking at it. They writers and creators have lied repeatedly about what they promised to do, it's filled with modern propaganda that is beaten into you, it's not clever, it's not thoughtful, and therefore it's entirely forgettable. One thing featured here when Farragut gets splashed, that Star Trek usually forgets in its visual effects, is the massive amount of gasses that would balloon outward from a bursting ship. And form an instant cloud of freezing atmosphere which would move along with the disabled ship in its relative frame of motion. Farragut's death in this sequence is one of the most realistic visualizations of a large vessel being destroyed in Star Trek.

one of the main reasons i never got into trek early on was the immunity bubbles that turned into sparkly dust when a ship finally died. I'm fairly sure thats not how it works at all. In vacuum with no convection or conduction, gasses won't cool at all for a while, much less make "instant frozen bubbles", in fact quite the opposite, the lack of pressure should mean that smoke and vented atmosphere ought to dissipate immediately. In fact, we shouldn't even have a fireball, 'cause those are caused by atmospheric pressure partially containing an explosion. Any debris blown off the ship would also fly out of view at extreme speed due to no drag. So, a truly realistic scene would simply have the Farragut engulfed in a flash of light before being left with a clean, incadescent hole.

Someone determined to win at any cost is a fool - sacrifice may be needed sometimes, but you also need to know how and when to retreat/lose at times, so as to fight and win a potentially bigger or more important battle another time. The wisdom to know when and how to lose is also a necessary leadership skill, rather than a gung-ho victory-at-all-costs blinkered mentality, which shows someone who's unable to game out alternative strategies, and how to retreat to come back for a more decisive victory.

Love this episode and Strange New Worlds. My only gripe with this episode is that it seems that the Romulans had warp drive in this episode. In the TOS episode that this episode is based on, the Romulans didn't have warp drive yet. Just impulse drive. A minor technicality but Strange New Worlds is the best new Trek in years! You may be surprised to know that the Romulans coined the bird of prey term. Also the Klingon bird of prey was originally intended to be a Romulan ship, but was changed to Klingons since they were more marketable. Industrial Light & Magic did not get the memo in time so what they sent was still intended to be a Romulan ship, but they just used the design anyway. So ultimately the Klingons ripped off the Romulan ship and the Romulan name.

@@seawolf4846 I'd absolutely agree, in any Sci-Fi that ever gave a crap about inertia, yet Trek ships never cared about this no matter how fast they were going, or whatever maneuvers they pulled except when the crew gets shaken by shots or a space storm. Can't really talk inertia in a rule system where ships fly like airplanes in space with only forward thrusting engines. If their lore explanation "inertia dampening system" that prevents the crew from turning into minced meat when flying a sharp turn with thousands kilometers per hour is there, they could evade that shot. In the end it doesn't really matter though, because entertainment. Or, I'd say, reduce the windup time, make the plasma ball a tad faster, or show the thing being guided like the later age torpedos, and it's all fine.
