*since TOS, I would argue. During TOS Kirk’s skills as a tactician was played up a lot, including his beating Spock at chess in their first episode together (Where No Man Has Gone Before). Between this episode (Balance of Terror), “The Corbomite Maneuver”, “The Golden Years”, etc. his skills were pretty much unmatched.

This sequence is based on the original series episode "Balance of Terror". In that original episode Kirk is commanding the Enterprise and Spock is the first officer. The duel between the two ships is isolated in a cat and mouse duel that damages both ships. The Romulan anticipating the maneuver around the comet almost costing Kirk the battle. The episode ends with the Romulan commander self destructing his own ship on this side of the neutral zone to avoid the dishonor of being boarded. One of my favorite episodes of all time. Now you know how old I am.

Then you would also know that the maneuvers by the ships mirrored a sea battle between submarines during WWII. All the maneuvers were tactically sound, up to and including the run from the plasma ball.

@@dangeary2134, yes. and the original script has the Enterprise warp in full reverse in an attempt to "outrun" the plasma weapon. By the time the weapon hits the hull it has little to no impact. The Klingons and the Romulans use disrupter style plasma weapons as the main armament of their ships. At least in the original series and offshoots up to 2004.

The fact that this show steals heavily from a classic episode of TOS is a vulgarity. This is the kind of slop we are given as Star Trek 56 years after the franchise was begun by geniuses. Akiva Goldsman excretes this filth into our faces and we are supposed to pretend it isn't what it blatantly is.

@@ckline5486, I have had similar feeling about the newest releases. The writers now have a fraction of the talent that the writers had in the past. And I suppose they do not have to due to the technological explosion we have experienced in digital technology. What writers lack in talent and creativity can be cloaked with special effects and drama. Also, obvious in these new releases as with many modern shows, is the obvious tilt towards wokeness, Identity, equity, and inclusion nonsense combined with the matriarchy in space theme that is so shallow, linear, and stupid. It would be much more enjoyable if CBS would just re-create the original series with modern special effects, new actors that mirror the original cast, and repeat the original script and score as it was written back in 1968. Now that would be fun to watch!

This episode is a perfect example of what I have always said was the Federations biggest flaw it policy of non aggression to the point where they do almost nothing. It may sound good on principle/paper but it makes things needlessly difficult for the Federation and makes itself vulnerable and weak to militaristic and aggressive races like the Klingons and the Romulans Look at Pike he followed Federation policy to the letter, avoiding a conflicts as much as possible, focusing on just crippling the Romulans and opening a dialogue with them ignoring everything the Romulans did, who were clearly the aggressors and he was against lethal action and in the end all it did was led to war. The Federation never really learned the lesson that peace at any cost is simply another word for surrender, that avoiding aggressive action to a clearly aggressive people and simply responding to opponent actions with dialogue/talk makes them look weak and causes more conflicts. Sometimes if you want peace you have to show your opponent strength and that you can match them, otherwise your just food for the sharks.

Maybe you didn’t know but this is what our Aircraft Carriers do today. There are official logs of Chinese and Russian fighter jets trying to show fearlessness by flying aggressively near the bubble protection zone of the flotilla (Destroyers, Carriers, and other ships) but we don’t attack first with authorization for the Pentagon. By the way, where do you think Star Trek gets its command processes, methods, and systems from? Wait for it, “The Military”. Guess you will have to hate the United States Military for the origin “The Federation Flaws and its Policy of Non Aggression to the Point Where they do Almost Nothing”. By the way, NASA takes the same policy and will do so when they began deep space explorations

@@jam0to9 Every navy practices similar rules of engagement in international waters. As long as you don't get too close, don't paint a ship with a targeting radar for too long or do a few other things, which they will tell you over radio, they will not fire on you no matter how belligerent you act. The USN is just the largest blue water navy so they are the ones who get tested the most on such things. Also we didn't need authorization from the Pentagon. The RoE are very clear cut. If a plane or boat violates those rules they get attacked. The rules say when to warn and when to attack. The Russian and Chinese militaries knew those policies and knew just where the lines were and pushed them as far as they dared.

You know, your observations would be a lot more insightful if this wasn't fictional entertainment masquerading as reality. What the characters do are solely for the purposes of advancing a story line, with as much drama as can be fit. Rational behavior takes backseat to getting the narrative across, with the more theater the better.

When the the original series aired nobody knew what the Romulans looked like, so it was a great surprise that they looked like Vulcans, like Spock. And mirroring the unease and tensions of the cold war era, them looking like Spock created tension by doubting Spocks integrity and loyalty, which was further pushed by Spock making a mistake which gave away Enterprises location for which he was blamed to have done it intentionaly because the Vulcans and therefore him are secretly cooperating with the Romulans. And for Spocks remark in this series about the Vulcans origin, he is right, the Romulans are of Vulcan origin ald left their planet long ago and never shed their warlike nature. Before Surak brought the philosophy of logic to their people and led them to be what we see today, the Vulcans were a very agressive and warlike species which was intensfied by their planet turning into a harsh arid world. There is lot's of lore in different materials like books that explores that part of them.

Rigelians are Vulcanoids species too but has more green toned skin and facial tattoos. Like the Vulcans&Romulans, the Rigelians are an artificially uplifted species by the Architects/Ancients(which possibly ascended to became part of the Preservers). You could say that the Rigelians/Vulcans/Romulans are different tribes just like the Caitians are related to the Kzinti. Most likely the Rigelians are the parent species of the Vulcans/Romulans just like the Kzinti is the parent species of the Caitians.

@@Exaris79 In TNG especially, we see or hear mention of several Vulcan-descendant or distantly related species. The Mintakans for instance from "Who Watches the Watchers" physically resemble Romulans/Vulcans, but this appears to be the result of paralleled evolution instead of direct descent. Meanwhile, it's shown that Early Vulcan exploration efforts and splinters of the Romulan exodus fleets from Vulcan, started their own distant colonies and factions seperate from Vulcan, before falling to the side (such as the Rigellan Beta, mentioned above) such as the Debrune empire. ...It looks like of the major Vulcanoid groups out there, only 3 remain in any significant number however. The Beta Rigellians (Alpha Rigellians are a turtle/avian like species that don't appear to be related, species wise), The Romulans (and possibly the Remans), and the OG Vulcans. My theory: since references and parts were found amongst Debrune ruins to the ancient Vulcan psionic super weapons, and the Vulcan instictual agression, I think the others probably destroyed themselves...they expanded out, until they couldn't anymore, and then turned back inwards...having never had the logical and emotional discipine of Surak nor the drilled in duty and sense of service of S'Task and his Romulan followers/descendants (as well as, at least hinted heavilly in the screen, a general loss of psionic ability amongst their descendants), nor the cooperative nature the Beta and Alpha Rigellians had to display to live on the same world and in the same system...they fell back into the primal self-destructive state that Surak and S'Task had both sought to circumvent. Either they literally destroyed themselves internally, or they aggressively raged outwards until they hit something that could hit back and hit back HARD. Personal headcanon: at least one of these groups hit a Borg vessel, causing the wiping out of their civilization in ancient times, which is why the Borg showed an interest in the Neutral Zone border worlds of the UFP and RSE several thousand years later at the end of TNG's Season 1, despite not seemingly otherwise having a known interest in the Alpha/Beta Quadrant prior to Q's early intervention in "Q Who".

I love World War 2 movies centred around submarine combat, they made some great ones in the 40's and 50's. Run Silent, Run Deep, The Enemy Below, Great films. Submarine combat movies had a tension no other War movie had because both enemies were essentially blind, and fought by sound and feel. Riveting and suspenseful stuff. Star Trek TOS, Balance of Terror was modelled after those movies and had ALL of the tension, suspense, and taut action of their conventional predecessors. Roddenberry described Star Trek as "Wagon Train in Outer Space", but Balance of Terror showed it to be much, MUCH more. THIS episode of Strange New Worlds is good, BUT, like the first season of TNG that recycled scripts from TOS, the end product just does NOT live up to it's progenitor. When an episode of a TV series almost sixty years old can STILL outshine the newer product, that is the TRUE sign of a CLASSIC. It's untouchable.

Lest we forget that on TOS Enterprise hears word back from Starfleet Command at the end of the episode saying that Kirk had their support 100%. "Use your own discretion." This wasn't said to a reckless captain, he was the literal prototype for everything after. Kirk was always essentially the golden boy, the guy who win's the no win scenario, not just a good captain but literally the best Star Fleet had to offer, so I think SNW had better think long and hard before they start trying to make him seem like anything other than the legend he is. Also what does losing the Farragut do to his character's reputation in a fight he actually won in just the Enterprise on TOS? Those of us keeping score think this was a grave mistake on the part of SNW. Great episode, but damn careless when all is said and done.

This episode is a perfect example for what can happen, if you almost zealously adhere to your own cultural ideals while dealing with radically different cultures, which is typical for the UFP and which is why the Klingons thought of them as cultural assimilators. Another, though less magnificently executed, episode that shows that is DISCO's "The Vulcan Hello": Michael Burnham, as out of line as her behavior as a Star Fleet officer might have been, would have succeeded in preventing the Klingon war by attacking the sarcophagus ship, heeding Sarek's advice and Klingon culture. Whereas captain Georgiou's standard Federation diplomatic approach, completely ignoring Klingon culture, actually elicited the war .

IF Spock was still tracking the Romulan ship, HOW did it get BEHIND the Farragut? The previous screen showed it AHEAD of both the Enterprise and the Farragut. WHY weren’t they at RED ALERT before the attack?

At that point of tech, they still had shortcomings on both sides. If I was the Romulan commander, I would have done the same thing. Spoof the enemy’s sensors. It’s likely that he used a simple, low tech way to do it, as it makes tactical sense. Make the enemy believe your are somewhere you are not.

How did Kirk lose? First the Romulans only had the plasma torpedo not phasers and their ship was slow compared to the enterprise. And no shields on the Farragut?
@2097Pyros
@2097Pyros Жыл бұрын
There are shields on the Farragut, you can see them flare up when a cannot shot from the T'Liss hits the saucer during the flip. However, the shields would not have mattered because the Destabilized Plasma Torpedo (to use the STO name for the weapon) is just that powerful. The weapon caused catastrophic damage through an outpost's deflectors AND through a large thickness of asteroid (and it's like that in the original, too). The Farragut's lucky it took that head-on, because taking that kind of hit on the flat of the saucer....well, no more saucer section.

I'm so here for the implication that if they destroyed the Romulans on sight the conversation with the Vulcans in the Federation would go like this: Vulcans: As pacifists, we cannot condone-- Spock: The Romulans are clearly related to Vulcans but have not embraced pacifism. Vulcans: Understood, live long and prosper.

First, Starfleet ships can only fire forward? Second, why do they fly like airplane when they are in space? Couldn't Kirk's ship simply spin about the axis of the saucer to face the Romulans? That would take like 1/2 of a second. Another thing that all Starfleet ships should be doing is having their finger on the warp button on a setting that allows them to jump a minimum distance anytime they get surprised by something during an upcoming battle.

That episode would probably be Pike having second or third thoughts about his fate again and being shown that he, the enterprise, and at least the Rigel colonies get wiped out by the Doomsday machine because Kirk is not Captain of the Enterprise and Pike doesn't figure out that flying the Constellation with the impulse engines set to overload into the Doomsday machine is what will destroy it. That will be because Pike has no Spock to help him figure it out since Spock was killed in the alternate timeline Balance of Terror

Romulans were in TOS this show is saying this is the time they meet the romulans? Well that's cannon breaking as it was established that the Enterprise first came into contact with the romulans in the 22nd century with Captain Archer. And it's been well known and established simce star trek tng that vulcans and romulans share an ancestry as they were the same race. Why is spock only finding out this now as if he didn't know that romulans existed and as if he's never seen a romulam before and didn't know they share an ancestry? Ugh the first few episodes of this season was good but but clearly someone didn't do their homework. Why should I be surprised it's kurzman trek.

You’ve clearly never seen Balance of Terror. It’s strange to argue the breaking of canon if you’re completely ignorant of the source material. Yes, they skipped explaining that there had never been visual communication with the Romulans before. It was mentioned somewhat in passing… but not clearly. And in the original episode, it was a somewhat contrived plot point to progress the anti-bigotry message of Balance of Terror. (Seems very unlikely they never found a Romulan body during the entirety of the Earth-Romulan War) But to whine about the breaking of canon when you have no grasp of that canon is farcical to a almost pathetic degree.

How funny that they made the Romulan Bird-of-Brey (an analogue to submarines) no longer act in its trademark way - remain cloaked until firing its plasma-torpedo, then cloaking again. Now it acts more like a Klingon Bird-of-Prey with its plastering of the Farragut.

That Tiberius4 Maneuver is stupid. Knowing the Romulan's main weapon is being on the front arc, the Farragut should had moved to flank the enemy instead of just flipping right in front of it. Regardless if it's above or below of Romulan's plasma torpedo firing arc, the Farragut should had moved anywhere but stay in the front. Of course the Romulan got a direct hit as instead of putting distance between itself, the helm officer seems to be thinking in simple 3d axis for its maneuvering. In the TOS, Sulu tried to outrun the plasma torpedo instead of going for a frontal counterattack. This allowed TOS Spock to determine the longer the distance, the slower&less destructive energy that the Plasma Torpedo has since it was fired. Even with weakened shields, this allowed the TOS Enterprise to survive a direct hit&Kirk took advantage of the Plasma Torpedo's weakness. I think the big difference in this battle for both the SNW Farragut&Enterprise to the TOS Enterprise are their helm officers. TOS Sulu&Chekov were great at their stations. Chekov being in Tactical had great timing&didn't waste his shots. So instead of flanking the Romulans, the Farragut got hit directly and Enterprise also failed to take advantage of the situation by not firing a shot while the Farragut was in trouble. Pike failed in his assumption of having one of the ships act as bait for the Romulan so that the other Starfleet ship could hit the enemy. Finally, SNW Kirk should had programmed the other drone mining ships to do a kamikaze warp run towards the Praetor's flagship. This would allow Enterprise to escape without further damage but also show the Romulans that Starfleet has expendable ships that's willing to take the fight directly to the enemy. The Romulans still outnumbered the Starfleet ships but they're going to be too busy trying to save their flagship.

The fact the original episode was based on the movie The Enemy Below. They did not look at that source when they wrote this episode so it seems more disconnected from the source being a rewrite of a episode. While okay I think they should used the movie Greyhound as the source for this episode. I mean the Kurtzman writers are so good at plagiarizing other folks works.
