Ron Darling, former New York Mets pitcher and color commentator for SNY, joins Golic & Wingo to discuss a passage from his book “108 Stitches: Loose Threads, Ripping Yarns, and the Darndest Characters from My Time in the Game," in which Lenny Dykstra is accused of screaming out racist remarks at Boston Red Sox pitcher Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd.

Darling coming out with this now serves no purpose other than to sell his book. Bringing up an incident that happened 33 years ago that only he remembers. Even if it's true, what's the point? Boyd said he knew nothing about it and is hurt if it's true because his interactions with Dykstra have only been positive. Boyd said he doesn't want anything bad to happen towards Dykstra or Darling. This was done to sell a book. Nothing more, nothing less. Cheap move by Darling.

The only thing Dykstra did to Oil Can was take him deep to lead of game 3 of the World Series...and totally turn things around for the Mets. Darling should appreciate that and write about that in his book. Even if Lenny said racist stuff to Oil Can during the World Series, that wouldn’t crack the top 50 dumbest things he’s done. Just trying to sell books.

bruh, read the title of his book. It includes some of the most wild and memorable characters he played with. Gooden and Dykstra are certainly two of those guys, and they both certainly have their controversies. So I would argue that it is vital to the book.

They aren't the same person they were 20 years ago. No one is people grow and mature. I just can't stand someone bringing up someone's past mistakes and keep crucifying them over and over. He did his time . He paid his due. If you don't like the racism I understand that. No need to bring up hom going to jail years ago. It has nothing to do with it at all. @@joshmillarich4916 , I've definitely made mistakes and agree with some of what you said. As far as Lenny not being the same person, he's probably worse now. he was low key back then because he was able to get away with things due to his incredible talent. The 1986 Mets were a phenomenal team, but they were also the most hated team that year and years after. When you have that much ego's on one team its bound to explode at some point in time. Its such a shame to see how some of the team mates now respond to things that happened long ago. Let it go, and stop throwing your team mate under the bus just because you see a $$$$ potential.

I actually believe Lenny after hearing multiple angles on this - many Mets ballplayers are rushing publicly to his defense, and Boyd has no recollection of it. Further, in the excerpt related to the story itself, Darling calls Lenny a host of things, and in this video, it's all "I've got no problem with Lenny!" I think Ron is either misremembering or trying to sell books.
@benjamin29471
@benjamin29471 5 жыл бұрын
@@jemcmanus3 Prior to hearing every teammate say Lenny over Ron on this one and Boyd say he didnt remember it, I'd agree. Lenny's an easy target because of his known history, and I get that, but part of that also opens the possibility that Darling leveraged that to sell a book. Even in Darling's account vs. time on the interview circuit about the book, he's contradicted himself a little. The book reads like a complete condemnation of Dykstra, and Ron is now saying he has nothing against Lenny personally.

Dykstra's past is irrelevant. It's highly unlikely that it happened, considering the fact that he had Strawberry and Mitchell in his own dugout, with Rice and Baylor on the other side.
