God, Cossel is irritating in this fight. If their isn't action every 5 seconds, he isn't interested. There was allot of action and it was a slugfest. Yet Cossel had to downplay the whole fight.

LeDoux fought everyone back then. He was a trial horse for heavyweights. Tough bastard. I remember when he surprised Ken Norton in the last round, Norton was out, draped over the ropes, and the fight ended. A draw. I can't imagine how much brain injury he must have had.

Cosell, what a jerk in this fight as these two men fought their hearts out and they deserve all the credit in the world. Excellent action fight the kind the fans wish they could see today. Ledoux was better than I remember him being as he stood toe to toe with a slugger like Lyle and it was Lyle who got knocked down early in the fight not Ledoux. Lyle did get the decision which was fair as I think he won more rounds but it is too bad someone had to lose as this was a great effort by Ledoux.

All Cosell did was put them down for the whole fight. "The 'action' if you can call it that" while the fight was at a pretty brisk pace for heavyweights.

Shame on Cosell for the way he commentated this fight. He spoke as if he had fought as a skilled fighter himself. Howard seemed to me as being far from an expert in the sport of boxing .props to these two courageous fighters who were more skilled in the ring(and besides Howard was getting paid because Ledoux and Lyle were brave enough to step into the ring) than a blabber mouth like him could ever be….

@@timcoughlin5834 Yeah, Cosell was occasionally a colorful announcer, other times he was simply just way too negative. Examples are this was a good action fight. He also called Foreman-Lyle, "Utterly without boxing skill." That was BS. That fight had knockdowns, but it also had a lot of good jabs and believe it or not, some defense. They went down because they hit hard.

I always liked Howard Cosell for the stances he took but never liked his condescending tone when it came to some fighters and boxing in general. He shouldn’t have called fights if he didn’t like doing them. The courage it takes to step in the ring should not be belittled by any announcer!!!

Well I only remember one fight Howard Hated calling. That was Larry Holmes Vs Tex Cobb. Holmes beat the shit out of him and the ref would not stop the fight.

Howard Cosell was at the time the most despised boxing announcer on television, he was pedantic and boring with no sense of presence. The Foreman/Lyle fight confirmed everything that Howard was....a fraud.

I remember reading in ring magazine that Ron Lyle was set to make a comeback at 52 years old, this was in the mid 90s.. It never really went anywhere though, I guess no promoter was willing to take him seriously at that age..

He fought 4 fights in 1995 and ko'd each dude. I think he was 54 then. To me fighting 4 dudes at 54 years old is a comeback. Imagine if they put Lyle in there against Tyson in 1995. Tyson was just getting out of prison and fought the great white Hope Peter Mcneely. I doubt Lyle could have lasted one round with Mike Tyson. In 1995.

@@nikolailic431 Tyson would win. One of my favorite fights til this day is Lyle vs Foreman. Lyle had a chance to win but could not put Foreman down. Lyle really can box. He fought after he got out of the penitentiary again. However not sure how good he was because I can not find clips of his last fights. I just know he won.

I met Lyle in 1990 he was working the door at a casino in Vegas . I was bouncing around the corner at a club and I fought any one back then that man was a beast back then you could tell that he was game always even after all that time Howerd Cosell didn't know what he was talking about he was one of the best ever he would kill these guys today easy

Surprisingly Lyle got off to a 🐌 slow start doing nothing in the first 3 rounds. Scott LeDoux couldn't put Lyle away in the third. That was his big opportunity.

Ledoux was tough, but a stumblebum as a boxer. He carried his hands down at waist level and objected when his fights were stopped due to his face being cut to ribbons. He was billed as the "Fighting Frenchman". Should have been billed as "The Human Punching Bag".

@@jrupp8853 I totally agree. His prison time took off very valuable years and his team could not baby him. He was thrown in with grizzled veterans early. I would have loved to meet him because he seemed like a great guy. But that's life and because he fought Ali Ron is a legend.

@@vincentfisher1603 Lyle was a gang member as a youth who went to prison for 2and degree murder. He also allegedly threatened to kill his trainer at the end of his career. Notwithstanding, Lyle was unlike Bobick or Cooney who fought the best of his generation. Lyle would have been a champion in this era whether it be WBA, WBC, or WB-whatever. Unfortunately, he came along during a time with some of the greatest fighters in history.

I'm a 65 year old white guy, despised and ridiculed by the Left. I have never earned 6 figures in my life, have been an Ali fan since 1970 and have followed pro boxing for almost 50 years. If you like my credentials then allow me to give my look. Lyle's gang membership has to be forgiven. Apparently he never had the adult supervision to guide his youthful energies. Lyle and so many others from the late 60s and through the 70s would have difficulties with those who around 7' tall. Lyle got a very late start in pro boxing but did very well. The guys from years ago were better trained in my humble opinion. Examine Tyson Fury's last opponent. The guy had no idea what to to do. Tyson Fury, I posted this elsewhere, would have been a headache for Ali. Tyson has complete command of the ring. His lateral movement is excellent for such a big guy. This is not about race but skills. Tyson Fury, in my very humble opinion, is the best of a very weak division. Not his fault. Marciano and Bob Foster ruled weak divisions and created legends.
