Follow MprooV on Twitter / mproovapp #agadmator Jeremy Silman: When I was asked to create the chess position for Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, I was more than delighted. Throughout my life, I’ve watched movies and TV shows make a joke of real chess positions and real chess lingo. Now, after years of seething, I finally had a chance to do the job right.
My gripes were the following:
* When referring to an opening system, the actors would never say, "Ah, that’s my favorite line in the Sicilian Defense.” Instead they would blurt out, "Hey Jeb! You are playing the Farmer Smith line against the Oak Tree Defense.” I’ve never understood why they couldn’t use a real opening name in the script.
* When referring to a famous player, they would never say, "Oh, there goes Alekhine!” Instead, we would always get some bastardized Russian name: "Oh, there’s goes Ragmazagolsky!”
* The actors were never taught how to move the pieces correctly. A real chess player doesn’t push the piece meekly forward, he grabs the sucker and smashes it down on a square. If he captures, one hand moves his piece and simultaneously cranes the enemy unit off the board, almost faster than the eye can follow.
* In about 20% of the scenes I’ve watched, the chessboard has actually been incorrectly placed, with a dark square in White’s right hand corner (it’s supposed to be a light square in that corner).
* Invariably, no matter how strong the players are supposed to be, one will think for quite a long time, smile, confidently make his move, and his opponent will move something and say, "Checkmate!” (Does any strong player EVER say checkmate?).
Clearly, I was faced with stemming this tide of insanity. Unfortunately, many of these ideas faded when I read the first Potter book and was faced with the problem at hand: What position would I create that would justify Ron sacrificing himself?

He not only created a puzzle that suited their needs, he made it very dramatic. The queen takes the rook _right in front_ of Harry. Very scary. When Ron gets taken, he's way on the other side of the board, making it feel like there's nothing they can do.

If they had to take 3 pieces, Ron should've taken the king, that way he's able to play the whole game. Then he should have put like Hermione as one of the rooms and Harry as the g2 or b2 pawn. Those pieces are fairly easy to keep alive.

Of course Elo is never mentioned in HP, but McGonagall was written to the a genius who consistently gained perfect scores in all manor of academic testing. Considering she was already one of the best duelists and transmutes on the planet, the fact that she chose to use her skill in chess to protect the Sorceror's Stone implies she was probably one of the best chess players in the wizarding world as well.

"they didnt even include him in the credits." Wow that almost physically hurts. Like litterally everyone ends up in the credits of movies. They play for like half an hour.
@graealex
@graealex 3 жыл бұрын
All the people that work for a movie production are usually associated with guilds, which always requires the production company to include them in the credits, and companies include clauses to get mentioned in the credits. That is contrary to many other businesses, where you might sign NDAs preventing you from even mentioning any association. So the credits aren't just a random list of people the production company somehow remembered, but a big legal liability. The production company can't just add or remove names from the credits at will. This all goes back to the time when movies had no credits, and actors could barely make a living because they were so replaceable.

@graealex
@graealex 3 жыл бұрын
@@shadebinder9969 It's interesting how the industry is organized, and reading up on SAG and SAG-AFTRA on Wikipedia gives a good overview. It contains stuff like: "No member shall work as a performer or make an agreement to work as a performer for any producer who has not executed a basic minimum agreement with the Guild which is in full force and effect." "Membership in SAG-AFTRA is considered a rite of passage for new performers and media professionals. It is often procured after getting hired for their first job in a studio that has a collective bargaining agreement with the union." So once you are a member, you can't work for companies that don't have agreements with SAG, and once a company has an agreement with the SAG, it can only employ SAG members.

A reader asks: What happens to a director who’s not in the guild?" "Why couldn’t Rodriguez bring in a co-director? The guild has stuck to a one-director-per-film policy since 1978, to keep producers and stars from demanding “gift credits.” Exceptions are made under special circumstances"

Another thing that I never see mentioned about this but is really cool, is that Ron made a really interesting opening choice. You can watch in the movie he goes with the Scandinavian defense. I see people wonder "why does he have all his weaker pieces but no queen?" Probably because of this opening. It's not a really highly regarded defense against e4 for black, its not bad but there are better options for sure. It's a bit wild because you send out the Queen so early, but it's actually really clever and considerate from Ron, because by going with an opening that used the Queen more he protected himself and his friends, the weaker pieces, that usually go first. Ron used the Scandinavian, and riskily put the Queen out first to help his friends.

It's worth noting that Ron's line in the scene was "then you'll be free to *_check_* the king." It's possible he gave a longer explanation of the forced mate afterwards but it may have been cut for time. In fact, I want to believe there's an entire unused take of Harry destroying the white queen. If I ever was to meet Daniel Radcliffe, my first and only question would be to ascertain whether this footage exists.

@@JontyLevine Thanks to the full scene being uploaded on YT, I took a look - when the White King drops his sword in front of Harry, you can see a shot of what I think might be the White Queen knocked over, on the left side of the screen. So I think the move was made, just cut from the movie.

Thanks for this video. I didn't know this and I couldn't figure out the chessposition in the movie. Also, in the movie Harry gives immediate checkmate after Ron Sacrified himself, and in your video the bishop has to make 2 moves. So yes, I do think they screwed this up. Too bad, because I too detest those stupid chess scenes in movies as you described.

Rose, try checking with Stockfish 8 if capturing the Rook with the queen was a good idea. The answer is a mixed feeling: checkmate was still avoidable up to that point, but on the other hand the "way out" of this was still a winning position for black. I would personally think that God abandoned me and resign at that point if I were white.
@martinmaguire-music6692
@martinmaguire-music6692 6 жыл бұрын
+Lecio, you are right, in the sense that, if Qf5, then the only way to win is if Hermione takes the queen and gets killed by the knight. I mean, this is from stockfish. After Qf5, every winning sequence for white involves Rxf5, Nxf5 at some point. And whilst, in the film, Ron could survive being knocked off the stone horse, Hermione literally is the rook, and would presumably get hit directly by the white knight and hence die. Although the stockfish engine on lichess still calls Qxc3 a 'Good Move' lol, but it thinks Qf5 is the best which, with the parameters, causes huge problems. But it's not a 'blunder,' unless the engine in Harry Potter knew the parameters.

Silman explained Qxd3 as follows: "This eats a pawn (thereby making the producer happy!) and prevents the Knight's intrusion into h3. She also threatens to capture Harry on a3! Note that I had the Queen make the capture because I wanted to do everything possible to turn this piece into something the young fans hated. In other words, I wanted to turn the White Queen into the scene's villain." It was not meant to be the best chess move. www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/features/essays/issue26/chessgameinsorcerersstone/

While I like how he designed the puzzle, I have one complaint. When Harry moved, he said "checkmate", even though it clearly wasn't, there was still one move to be played, the Qe3. Can't call it a checkmate when it's not. So how was Harry supposed to destroy the queen made of stone with his bare hands? So, from dramatic point of view, the puzzle isn't perfect.

There is no way to solve this damn puzzle, i spend around 3 hours of my life on this trying to figure it out, then i gave up, watched the solution of the video AND SNAPPED...!!!! (chess annotations below!) You should not play Qxc3, instead white should play Ne6 guarding c5 and attacking Rook (Hermine) on f8. So there is no Rxd3 for black because we would capture the rook. and there is no Bc5+ because the knight guards it. so after 1.Qxd3 Rc3 2. Ne6 only possible moves are with the Knight (2..Nh3+ or 2..Nf3+ or 2..Nxe6) everything else loses Hermine/Harry or the game lets look at 2..Nh3+ first. Here the queen is forced to capture 3.Qxh3 since the Bc5+ isn't possible and rook on f8 is under attack black loses after ANY move since Hermine or Harry are going to die. okay now 2..Nf3+ 3. Qxf3 and black loses again because Hermine or Harry are forced to die. last variation is 2..Nxe6 white simply captures the Rook 3. Qxc3 which attacks the bishop and forces him to move on the last possible square 3..Be7 after which the following line is forced 4. Ng6+ hxg6 5. Qh3+ Kg8 6.Qxe6+ Rf7 7. Qxf7+ (Hermine dies) Plz give a thumbs up and dont want it all go to waste for nothing :) Here are the variations with annotations: [Event "?"] [Site "?"] [Date "????.??.??"] [Round "?"] [White "?"] [Black "?"] [Result "*"] [SetUp "1"] [FEN "5r1k/1pN3pp/1Pb5/n1r1P1n1/7N/b2Q4/7P/1R4K1 b - - 0 1"] [PlyCount "12"] 1... Rc3 2. Ne6 Nxe6 (2... Rxd3 3. Nxf8) (2... Nh3+ 3. Qxh3 Rf7 4. Qxc3) (2... Nf3+ 3. Qxf3 Rcxf3 (3... Rc1+ 4. Rxc1 Rxf3 (4... Bxc1 5. Qxf8#) 5. Nxf3) (3... Re8 4. Qf8+ Rxf8 5. Nxf8) 4. Nxf8) 3. Qxc3 Be7 (3... Nf4 4. Qxa3) 4. Ng6+ hxg6 5. Qh3+ Kg8 6. Qxe6+ Rf7 (6... Kh8 7. Qxe7) 7. Qxf7+ *

xxx xxx I think they made it so that white didn’t know harry, hermione and ron where on pieces. When you where solving this you assumed that white would want to attack the bishop or rook and that it gave it a higher value then its king because if white played Ne6 then black plays Bc5+ and after Nxc5 black can play Rxd3 winning whites queen and having mate in 5 moves. So yes in this situation Harry dies but i don’t think it would happen as white saw that this would lead to checkmate. If you want to be stubborn and say white did know that they where in pieces then in this scenario harry dies but in the other scenario Ron dies, so it wouldn’t really matter to white which one it plays it’s killing one person either way. But I don’t like to think of it this way because the game wouldn’t have lead to this scenario following that logic as white would trade of it’s queen or others pieces early in the game to kill one of them. Ps: either way hermione lives so who really cares anyway. Pps: sorry you wasted 3 hours on this.
@intergalactic92
@intergalactic92 3 жыл бұрын
You are assuming that white is thinking like a human. White is thinking like a computer that is keen on capturing as many pieces as possible, and protecting its own queen as it is the most powerful piece left.
