Can you edit in Davinci Resolve like in Final Cut Pro? I finally switched!

There are features in Final Cut Pro that I love and therefore I never switched from Final Cut Pro to Davinci Resolve. Now I tested Resolve if I could do everything in it like in Final Cut Pro and if it would have all the features that I was so used to in Final Cut. Have a look at my findings and tell me in the comments, what you think about it!

Really an amazing breakdown Ronald! I agree with a lot of your frustrations, and was excited to see Resolve had some of these features! I'm particularly jealous of the Magic Mask. The only stuff I thought I would mention (mostly for the benefit of any FCP users watching this video) - In your comment about the strange arrangement of Voiceover clips (9:13), you actually can have these assigned to specific lanes so that they aren't cluttering up the timeline like you had showed. That option is found in the index under audio lanes, and it's based off the assigned roles. Also, I 100% agree on the frustrations of making singular changes to an audio elements and having to copy those across to every single clip on the timeline. I know you had mentioned not wanting to make a compound clip out of all of the chopped clips, and that's definitely a brute force method. But the best method for adjusting effects on all the clips at once is to just be thinking ahead in the edit. Rather than apply it to a compound clip at the end, I always apply my audio into a compound clip right at the very beginning, before any cuts have been made. This enables you to create the needed cuts after, then jump inside the compound clip to make your effects adjustments, and then they will be applied across the board. That said, this does seem like an unnecessary step, and I would love to see improved audio workflows in FCP! Again, this comment is purely for the benefit of those who want to stick with FCP and struggle with those particular things you mentioned. I really loved watching this video!

Hi Dylan, so cool that you commented one of my videos. I‘m a follower of your channel since your started it and your videos are really helpful for all Final Cut Pro users. I didn‘t know that thing with the audio lanes, good to know! But I really feel that resolve has much more to offer than final cut in terms of color and audio. The fairlight page is such a powerful tool, I‘m still scratching at the surface but have already found so many things I like a lot more than editing sound in Final Cut. At the end of the day we can all be lucky that we can choose between either of these NLEs, both are insanely cheap for what they offer and we can create amazing videos and films with it. Again, thanks for watching my video, it‘s cool to see that I reach the people who‘s videos I watch ;-)

Nice video Ronald! As a user of FCP and sometimes Resolve, I can not agree more, but there is one thing that I would really love to have in Resolve from FCP and that is the hovering preview. It is so easy and fast to just hover around the timeline and click instead of grabbing and moving the playhead as it is in Resolve

Yes, that feature is really nice in fcp. I didn’t use it a lot though but the idea of having two playheads (one where you hover over footage) is pretty unique.

You can in resolve you just have to have the blade tool selected and then when you move across the timeline, you will see it scrub the timeline. @@RonaldKasper

Great video buddy. You had me laughing when you mentioned spending SO much time in the past masking things out - and now 'freaking out' that you no longer have to do that with Resolve. Completely with you on that. Yep... as a long-time FCPX user, I've slowly but surely realized that Resolve is the one for my films and longer format projects, but will continue using FCPX for quick turnover, shorts, and hobby stuff.

The magnetic timeline is what made me never chose FCP in the first place, even tho it's pretty good and fast for mostly simple projects, it turns into pretty much a headache when you've been working on complicated projects with FX and grades etc. Although with some shortcuts and customization (inspired) I've made the editing workflow in Resolve much faster then stock Resolve, Premiere and FCP. For something like this if you have a gaming mouse with programmable buttons, you can used the side buttons or other buttons on the mouse to jump between clips. You can change the shorts in a way that you don't have to move your left hand and have all the commands on the left hand. *Shortcuts that I use: (make sure selection follows the playhead is enabled) Q : ripple start to playhead W : split E : ripple end to playhead S : ripple delete 1 : play in reverse (default shortcut is J) 2 : play and pause (default shortcut is K) 3 : play forward (default shortcut is L) If you press 3 more than once, playback speed will double, press again and it will quadruple same with 1. T : Trim mode Mouse button 4 : Jump forward clips Mouse Button 5 : Jump backward clips Holding shift while mouse button 4/5 : Jump between markers. Hope fully these shortcuts will make your editing much faster and more efficient then FCP.

My favorite feature I just learned about in Resolve is being able to open multiple timelines simultaneously. It’s made dragging in B-roll so much easier. But the one thing I think FCP does better than anyone is multicam editing. It just works.

Thanks for the great video I moved from Premier to DaVinci Resolve. I decided to do it like giving up smoking. If I had a problem, all I did was to ask the question using KZbin. In my experience, I could always find somebody explaining how Solve my problem. Eventually it all clicks into place.

There are a couple tutorials that will show how to do the trims and other modifications in the edit page w/o having to then delete the dead space. You just haven't learned the shortcuts that do that automatically yet. Also. You went about it the hard way in Resolve to go from log to rec 709. Should have gone to File/Project settings and clicked on the color management tab and selected your options. Or, if you only want to do that for the clip, go to the color tab, select the clip, and right click on the node. Select LUT in the pop up menu and then apply the basic LUT for just the clip. That would have taken care of your initial grade. Once you get more familiar with the program you'll like it even better.

hi Sam, I didn’t talk about color spaces and color management in this video because that’s a topic of it’s own. Of course I know how to manually transfer log footage into Davinci Wide Gamut, work in this larger color space and transfer it to Rec709 afterwards. And I know that color management can do this automatically, I‘ve used both. And that’s another huge advantage of Resolve. 👍

Amazing video! I have been Davinci Resolve only because I am quite new to video editing but very much enjoying it. The best of the best part of Davinci Resolve is that there is a very capable free version for beginners like me. It also has a Linux version so that when I am at home not using my macbook I can still work on videos on my much more powerful PC.

I absolutely love FCP for just getting the edit done and generally prefer a trackless NLE, but I must say this is a fantastic comparison and I really appreciate this comparison. I also use Resolve, but at this time not as much as FCP.

There was a reason why I kept working with FCP for the last three years but my projects became more complex and I needed more control over different "storylines" (as they would be called in FCP) and audio. That's why I tried resolve and now I don't want to work without it's features anymore ;-)

There’s a way to apply eq effect to entire audio roles so you don’t have to copy paste effects to each clip. If you make a compound clip then hold option and double click the compound clip it reveals the audio roles in the timeline and you can apply effect to each role separately.

Hi Alros, thanks for your comment! Believe me you’ll never switch back after you used Resolve for a few weeks. It takes some time to find everything but you have so much more possibilities in colorgrading and sound design. Love it!

So I'd import a library, create an event, create a Project (ex. Long form Video), then create a Project(ex. vertical short). and I can refer back to past libraries for some edits etc. Is this possible in Davinci? or something similar?

There IS a shortcut in FCP to link audio (or other clips) to ANY clip. Don't remember exactly, but I've done it before. Good video!

Yes there is, but as far as I know it is only possible to link anything to the main storyline. Not to any secondary storyline or b-roll above the main storyline. Which is kind of odd.

Thanks for the vid. Very interesting and having been a FCP fan for many years I am now giving Resolve serious consideration. However, I had to point out, a lot of your assertions about what FCP X doesn't do are incorrect. If you drop your new title over the top of the old one, the existing text will be picked up. You can select similar clips, using the search box on the left of the timeline. If you create a compound clip of your voiceover recording before editing and then edit with that, you just make EQ changes to that and it will change everything. The magic mask functionality is available using the Cinestudio plugin. Also if you enable 'show audio lanes' your audio will line up as you want. I think there were some other things but I can't remember them now! All that said, Resolve rules when it comes to grading!

FCP and Davinci both rock! I love editing in FCP a ton more because my brain works in the method of putting anything anywhere which is chaotic for most haha and using Audio lanes (like what dylan mentioned) when I want all my audio clips to be organized! That said davinci has been tempting to switch over fully because of the power of color grading and other tools like linking clips and audio effects would be nice but the speed ramping is just so perfect for my in FCP and I use a ton of it would slow down a lot of my process speeds in production. I have been editing a ton in Premiere and Davinici for work related things but speed ramping has been my biggest gripe about the platform. Everything else though rocks! The number one thing besides linking that would make FCP even better is being able to edit different clips in a compound clip without leaving the main timeline

I agree, it’s annoying having to open compound clips without seeing the main storyline anymore. But why don’t you like speed ramping in Resolve? It works pretty well, I‘ve done this a lot already and I think you even have more control over the timing than in Final Cut.

Oh thanks, it was my first try to do that in resolve. I just added a compressor with a 2:1 ratio and raised the „Make up“ to about 5. then I needed to add some voice isolation because I could hear a fan in the background (which you still can hear a bit I think in the shots where I‘m visible). Oh and of course some basic EQ settings (lowering everything below 100Hz, raising upon 2 KHz a bit). But I honestly didn’t take too much time here since I’m just starting out with audio editing in Resolve.

This is a great video but you can use a compound clip and apply the effect to that role..it’s easier actually and you can stem out your audio roles to pro tools or logic…or whatever you want to use…not arguing just stating that it is mad easy still in FCP X…I’m think of learning Resolve but I been using FCP since version 6… I love the new X but I know Resolve in can a lot more technical things over other NLE’s… I don’t know what to do lol FCP X is bomb they just need a few more features like a real mixer for audio would be so awesome! Hi Steven! Thanks for your comment! Yes I agree there are workarounds in FCPX and it’s not a bad NLE at all. But in Resolve you really have all the tools at your fingertips and the workflow just feels easier and more professional to me. The audio mixer is so great and the integrated effects suite (Fusion) really adds value as well. In general I feel that the Resolve community is growing like hell and FCPX doesn’t seem to get big updates. But use what you are happy with, it doesn’t depend on the NLE whether you make great videos or not 😉

Du beschreibst exakt meinen Schmerz mit FCP (Audio, komische Timelines, etc.) vor allem die Möglichkeit ein Projekt ordentlich über einen Mischer mit Master und Bus abzumischen ist einfach nur geil. Wenn ich mir denke wieviele Zusatzprogramme ich für FCPX kaufen musste (NEAT Video, Reel Motion Blur, Colorfinale Pro2, MotionVFX Plugins) und diese Funktionen schon on Board kommen in DVR. Besitze schon seit 2 Jahren auch die DVR Lizens aber aus reiner Gewohnheit leider noch nicht so sehr reingesprungen in das Programm, aber jedesmal wenn ich es benutze merke ich wieviel besser es ist. Alleine die Stabilisierung ist so so so viel besser als bei FCPX oder Premiere... Und ich vertraue Blackmagics CEO absolut, dass es immer mit kostenlosen Updates versorgt werden wird :-) VIele Grüße Dennis PS du hast mich motiviert mir auch mal eine Woche zu DVR zu zwingen 😄😄

Hi Dennis, ja ich glaube der Umstieg fällt einem schwer, wenn man gleichzeitig noch immer in FCP arbeitet. Deshalb versuche ich wirklich alle meinen neuen Projekte mit Davinci Resolve umzusetzen, das klappt soweit wunderbar, natürlich hat das erste etwas länger gedauert. Aber das Programm löst für mich so viele Probleme dass ich mich schon immer auf das nächste Projekt freue 😉

I think Resolve is easy to learn when you come from Final Cut Pro. Of course I'm still discovering new cool things and getting used to the huge amout of possiblities but I'd say you can edit your first video after using it for 1-2 days. And yes of course, creative people can do amazing things with any software, that's no doubt. But I can say for sure (after using Resolve for a few months now) that it is a much more professional editing software compared to Final Cut Pro. Editing in Davinci Wide Gamut is so good, the color space transforms ..... Uuuuuh so nice! The fairlight page ....... a dream ;-) If you don't need all of that because your projects aren't huge and you want the more streamlined editing workflow in Final Cut, then there's no reason to switch.

Thanks for your comment! Subtitles can be found in the effects section of resolve, you can drag them into your timeline just like any other title.

Easy to edit subtitles in Resolve. But the killer feature in the Studio edition is that it can use AI to transcribe your text and then automatically put the titles in place according to the parameters you pick - number of lines, width etc. Saves huge amounts of time.

I assigned the „delete gaps“ command which can be found in the menu under „edit“ -> „delete gaps“ to a key („-„)

I’m sure Resolve is fantastic but I’ve found it just too complicated to learn. Having a BMPCC4K, I use it to convert BRAW to Prores to edit on FCP. I am frustrated by the little secret sequences that you have to go through to do the simplest of things. It was hard to import footage but to output it I had to select the right combination of settings, and changing any of them seemed to reset the others. I got there in the end but wow, what a faff! I’d hoped it would be an alternative to FCP but frankly, I’m just going to film in prores in future. Resolve may be more suited to some projects but FCP is just so much more elegant to use.

Thanks for your response, I‘ve made the total opposite experience. I started using the predefined export settings which were fine and then started tuning it after some projects when I got more familiar with resolve. One thing that drove me crazy was that you can not choose your color spaces that you want to work in in FCP. What a BIG disadvantage compared to resolve. I felt I was really missing a professional workflow when I just converted every Slog3 footage to Rec709 with a LUT in FCP. That’s just not the right way. Since I work with color space transforms in Resolve and the Wide Gamut Workflow, my colorgradings really got immediately better and more accurate. If I were you, I‘d not give up resolve and try it again. After 3 days working with Resolve I deleted FCP. 😉

I don’t work in the industry and, for me, time is too short to struggle with software though, on your advice, I’ll give some more time! Another factor must surely be: as long as Resolve keeps stealing users from other NLEs, those companies have to keep making progress! 🙂

Check out the BRAW Toolbox. It allows you to edit BRAW within FCPX. We have been using it for a few months. It has an occasional glitch but it works. On small to medium size projects, this has been a game changer for our BMPCC4Ks. We formerly shot ProRes for the reasons you described. We are editing a feature that we filmed lots of BRAW multicams so we are learning Davinci Resolve. Using the BRAW toolbox for 3-4 BRAW cameras in a multicam clip in 4K via a Synology NAS over the network has been too much for FCPX. Davinci has been ok so far but we literally switched a couple of days ago. So it is pretty early to have a good conclusion.

I have been trying to move to Davinci and like you have a ton of plugins for FCPX that either do not work or I have to buy them for Davinci, how did you get your MotionVFX to work or see if they work in Davinci? The motionvfx plugins for Final Cut don’t work in Davinci. You have to buy them separately. But I contacted MotionVfx and they offered me 30 percent for all the plugins I‘ve already bought if I want to buy them for Resolve as well.

I’m just about to jump the fence too but Final Cut has two things that I really like that I can’t find on DaVinci…. The scrubbing of the timeline and automatic speed one click button to change one clip from say 30fps to 24fps instantly

The scrubbing in the timeline is missing, it only works in the thumbnails of the media pool. And you have to change the speed manually. You‘ll get used to it and you‘ll love all the other cool features of Resolve, which are missing in FCP

Hi there! As a FCP user I like to organize my projects by creating a new library for each new project and I keep the FCP library and files in a folder with all the content thats relevant for that project so it is very easy for me to pick that project up in the future if I need to. Is there anyway to do this with Resolve? I haven't found that solution yet, Thanks!!

I know this „problem“ and Resolve doesn’t work like Final Cut Pro here. Normally in Resolve a bin is not a physical folder. But this guy here developed a tool called „Super bins“ which does exactly do what you want: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2W9dJSjrsigmc0 Hope that helps!

Suppose you end a scene of a video with a black circle, that circle ends the scene from big to small or from small to big. And I've only seen Final Cut Pro users do this. I really like @isabela Juliana 's videos & she does that kind of transition or edits in her videos.

Excellent video. I’ve also made the jump and excited by what’s possible. (24yrs of editing. Started on Avid, then Premiere, Final Cut for a decade + and now Resolve). Biggest thing I miss is the pinch to zoom to expand/shrink timeline using the Magic Trackpad (action still possible via a keyboard shortcut but it’s not the same). But that’s more than made up for by use of the Speed Cut Editor and its scroll wheel.

I missed the pinch to zoom as well but bow I switched to a mouse and set this zoom function to the wheel of it (in combination withe the option-button). Works just fine and I use it all the time.

Any wheel on a keyboard if yours has one, or a device like the Davinci speed editor , or TourBox, or a $15 macro wheel plugged into USB, does the same thing on Davinci.

In FCPX for linking broll to audio etc, you can have secondary storylines for that b-roll. You don't need to use the primary storyline. You also don't need to manually delete empty space after trimming in Resolve, there's a shortcut that does both

Yes I‘ve figured out these shortcuts in the meanwhile, thanks. But concerning secondary storylines: the problem is you can’t combine video and audio in that secondary storyline so that I can‘t link any soundeffects to it.

9:36 For this, I simply put the whole timeline into one compound clip and then, from outside this compound clip, I show the different roles separately and apply effects to the entire role ;) Yes it is in a compound clip but you can still go inside and move them around without loosing your settings :P But anyway, I came here because i am seriously considering switching now and I must say your video is very motivating me to do it :D Thank you for the great content 🙏✨

Thanks! You are right there are ways to do this in Final Cut, but these are workarounds with drawbacks. In Resolve it just works how it should, and thats only one example for many. I‘m still pretty happy that I have switched and the community for Resolve is huge, I learn new amazing stuff every day

One of the powers of FCPX has always been organization, meta-data and tagging of clips and footage. How do you handle that in Resolve?

Resolve can do that all as well. And more. You can tag clips and Resolve has a feature called smart bins which lets you organize your footage in any way you want. You could create a smart bin where you filter for all footage shot in 120 fps and another one with footage from a specific camera. It’s all very intuitive and works automatically (no manual assignments to these bins is needed)

You skipped over the many Motion VFX plugs you paid for in FCP, I have the same issue with many FCP plugins I have purchased over the years. I´m assuming that none of these are compatible in resolve?

Hi Neil, what I meant is that I had to buy a lot of plugins in Final Cut, whereas Resolve has a lot of these effects built in. For example I had lens flare plugins from motionvfx. In Resolve there is a lens flare effect that can give you similar Results. I bought a 3D Tracker from motionvfx as well, whereas Resolve has a built in 3D Tracker. As „ekphotography“ mentioned in another comment, normal FCP titles seem to work in Resolve as well, but I first have to check that.

Hi Diego, to be honest I find my workflow in resolve more organized than in final cut. In FCP everything is in one place, which makes this one place very „busy“ when you use a lot of tools in a bigger project. In Resolve everything has it’s own page (fusion, fairlight, edit page,…) At the moment I don’t miss final cut that much 😉

Keyword collections is the real MVP for FCPX and you dont mention that. I'd switch to Resolve if they had proper sorting (ie keyword collections, their subclip system is terrible) and if you could have your audio connected to video by default. You are also not using the Roles to it's full potential and misrepresenting what it can do. I hate that there are hardly any progress for FCPX vs Resolve but it's still the quicker and more efficient editor.

All Apple products are getting worce, not better. It's just a lot of smooth talking and fooling around. Final Cut Pro is falling behind, more and more. Davinci Resolve has no competition. They will stay ahead of the game.

Yes it really feels like this. There are some new nice features in FCP from time to time, but these often already exist in resolve for a while. I think of the motion tracking functionality here.
