I love empty spaces. It gives me time to think what if anything I want to place in the space.... I try to remember everything I bring into my home will be there for a long time. I ask myself, do I really want it, need it, love it.

Until I was in my 40's I was almost organically a minimalist. I didn't know it by that label but I had grown up in very challenging conditions and it was a defense mechanism in response to abuse. Since then I have gone all the way through the "householder" stage and am returning to my natural setting slowly but with awareness and mindfulness that wasn't the case when I was a minimalist out of fear. I love the Hindu construct that you have to go through a householder stage because there isn't any insight to be had from never having owned. It's the purposeful re-alignment of acquisition, having something that you THEN choose to let go of, that teaches you what owning really means and how it works.

My grandfather was living a life of simplicity exactly equivalent to minimalism. He, as a principal in Government School used to live a valuable life after his retirement from the interest amount earned from his capital amount in nationalised bank. He definitely might have lived a more meaningful life even in his young age. His possession was a medium sized metal trunk box.🙏

Ive made empty shelves but did fill them. But it was more to space out things that were suffocated in another space. For instance in the kitchen. Ive cleared out cabinets. But then was able to have dedicated spaces. Like this is my breakfast. This is baking. And this is snacks. Instead of every cabinet having random assortments. I have been decluttering and minimizing since about 5 months now. We've donated so much and continue to often. It really makes you realize whats important. What hobbies you truly love. ( we had a ton of art supplies. Like alot. And realized we dont use it much anymore and so donated boxes of paints and canvases etc to a special ed class. They were to the moon excited) it can feel really good to make space in your life. And give to those who will really love it. Anyway im rambling. Keep it up everyone.

I've almost never (only a couple of times really) put things on my walls (pictures, etc) and I've always felt kind of weird about that in a way when other people would comment on it. I'm not sure why I have left most of my walls blank like that, but if it's just me, it doesn't usually bother me at all. Maybe I'm just not into decorating or whatever. But I've noticed that other people seem to think its kind of weird though lol.

Ronald, do you feel my handshake? Thank you so much. As you review all the ways we accumulate stuff purpose over expectation, useful, and useless, I have to include a small mountain of 'free' stuff I end up with. OMG!! I can't begin to list the things I just find on the street, thrift stores, even way in the back of my own closets, that I swear I am going to use. It hasn't been all bad because I have found some very valuable things that are used, things I have done wonderful makeovers to and they have a use and purpose. But there are still the things I find, things given to me by others, things acquired because of the low price. Sometimes a low price is worse than free because I somehow put an increased intrinsic value on the item because it was 25 cents. Really? If I have to clean it, move it, stare at it, find a place for it, and so on, its so-called intrinsic value of 25 cents is costing me way more mental and visual energy. Gotta go, gotta continue decluttering! Thank you again for your videos!!

As for the extra toothbrushes and toothpaste and dental floss bag, we are supposed to change our toothbrushes every 3 to 4 months so if you go to the dentist twice a year and change your toothbrush every six months you’d be using all the toothbrushes 🙂 I wanted to also say your home is so peaceful looking, just lovely.

Thanks. I love empty space. It's energizing. So I would keep the empty space if possible, though my dwelling is quite small and real estate is at a premium in there so I would try to keep some of it empty if possible. Not to brag of course but I've come to a point that I don't really desire impulse buying. Plus, I know that paying for less important things that are small dollar amounts add up over time. I'd rather save my money for something I really need/want. Also, if I think that desired item is too expensive I wait for a deal on that new item or find a good used one. That is the thrill of the hunt and it makes me happy to find it.

I would not do A or B. Option C: use that space to allow you to spread out what may be cluttering a different space. It makes both spaces not look cluttered. For example, if I clear off one shelf and the other is full, I will put half of what is on the full shelf on the now empty one in a way that creates some negative space on both shelves.

Ok, so don"t laugh. I actually shop with the intentions of, I must buy something. Unlike your typical window shoppers, I am an impulsive shopper. Until , well I get home and somehow some sense gets slapped right into me just by walking through the door. Its almost a guilt of walking in with a bunch of bags, full of STUFF I didn't even want nor did I need. I usually will return the items and repeat the cycle. When they say retail therapy, i think this is exactly what they meant.

Intentional living is tough! The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up really helped me realize this because of how you’re supposed to gather all items in a category in one place - suddenly I realized I had nearly 10 pairs of scissors in only 1,000 square feet! Yes, we’re a family of crafters, but if we had designated one place for scissors then we never would have ended up with so many.

My husband and sons are big amazon fans. I used to be, but as time passes I’ve begun to find the massive amounts of choice to be weeded through to be overwhelming. I like to get in and out, and see the item in hand if possible before buying (been burned a few times on items that looked great online but not so much IRL). Returning is such a PIA. Very handy shopping site 👍🏼, but it’s funny to realize that I use it less now than years ago when the numbers were far less.

Appreciate this video. I'd like to add that minimalism is an opportunity to become a distributor in a community ecosystem. Capitalism depends on lack and the act of turning something down because you have enough seems noble but if you're being offered something free (ie a toothbrush) you have the opportunity to pass that along in a way that closes a deficit gap. Instead of refusing something being given to you in the name of minimalism perhaps you can make it a point to catalog shelters and connect with families who could benefit from the things you refuse on a daily? Just a thought. I think minimalists can be wonderful distribution nodules in an ecosystem where resources can be perpetuated instead of cycled back into the capitalist structure of "buy" and "sell". Perhaps if more of us gave things away we'd feel less inclined to purchase to furnish the ideas that capitalism uses to bend buyer and seller habits (a naive oversimplification, I know).
