Ronny St Pierre Dahl? In all seriousness though… a brilliant buy. I’ll be watching the build process on this one carefully as a pre-DPF, V8 Troopy is my dream vehicle. I understand the reasoning behind the vinyl floor mats. But as the current owner of a 105 with hand winders… maybe you could do a conversation from a GXL for the door cards and power lifters…

Legend! Mine's a 2019. It's a huge blank canvas - glad you are giving it some time to get your head around the fitout. The trick I think is to keep it lightweight so you get a much more capable vehicle. The tall skinny tyres are the go and don't bother with a roofrack which is a lot of weight up top to bugger up the centre of gravity - already has huge storage inside. I have flexible solar panels on the roof - mounted to Rhino tracks.

I don't blame you for wanting to stick with a vehicle platform that you know well. The only trap to try to avoid falling into is building the second vehicle *_just_* like the first, to be different enough to be interesting.

He will. My wife & I joked that he’ll spend at least another $100k on it to satisfy his OCD. Lights, oh there will be lights... Lights on it, on top of it, under it, in it, in the wheel arches, in the grille, on the side, bam bam bam, lights! Then there’s the epic 12v work he’ll have done to it. Rack systems that he’ll fit, ditch then fit replacements. The rear cargo space will have extensive work done to it then will be face lifted 3 times afterward. Then the main interior will be face lifted twice. It’ll get a custom exhaust & unique bar work. Brush bars fitted then removed. Then another bar fitted. Another extensive set of recovery gear. This car will cost an absolute fortune but I suppose the ammo’s there for another 50-100 Ch7 & KZbin videos and that’s what it’s all about in the end.

Ronnie - go the skinny tyres. They look so cool. Easier to miss the potholes. The 225/95r16 Dunlop road grippers are great. I see too many troopies with huge tyres that are heavier and then need a rear bar. No need and makes opening the rear a pain.

Welcome to the Troopy club :-). A roof conversion is probably the best you can do. But check out carefully which one you choose. I decided to go with an individual solution because in bad weather conditions the possibility to sit upright without opening the roof is a big plus. Also a suspension upgrade is a must have, the original one is too soft with all the mods…. I’m doing my build also step by step, so I know exactly whats need to work better on the next trip. Have fun an I‘m already looking forward hearing about your ideas and thoughts. Keep us updated! Cheers mate!

Had a 92 Troopy with 1HZ - gave it an OME suspension, rear air locker, 32 x 11 x 15 BFG muddies. Also added Mercedes Benz bus mirrors - bloody beautiful! Went 400,000k before I sold it - still think I should have kept it... it was terrific. Went all over Oz and the only thing that went in 10 years was a fuel solenoid. BTW - Nissan rear pull bracket fits perfectly in the troopy chassis - bolt holes are alrady pre drilled - and makes a great recovery point above the towbar.

Hey Legend stoked you joined the club! First thing would be changing the rear springs to parabolics. Completely changes the vehicles handling and comfort. It’s like getting a coil conversion. You won’t regret it. Especially on the long trips. Speaking of, invest in some good seats. Xr6 seats are popular with the huracan adaptors. The factory seats will give you a back injury after time 😅

It’s your perfect DNA Ronny and great simplicity where I wouldn’t want to be stranded with the newer high tech DPF 4WDs. I always wanted a Troopy for it’s fantastic space and versatility. I do own a pre-DPF 2010 Auto Diesel Hilux because I prefer an automatic in my senior years hence no Troopy. Well done young fellah. Keep the build simple, watch the weight but don’t skimp on quality fit-out equipment. You may want to visit our stunning Coorong in SA or the Flinders Ranges/Lake Eyre.

Ronny, when you upgrade the tyres to 33's bang in a set of parabolic rear leaves and smart coils on the front a 2" suspension lift and great upgrade especially with BP51 shocks. It'll ride great loaded and unloaded and make it feel less like a van or ute. A Safari snorkel so it can breathe in, a Torqit exhaust so it can breath out and make it sound like it should. Great choice Ronny, I have a Hilux as one of our outback station vehicles & it’s just the town car. Not that it isn’t capable just not a car for poking around at 40km/hr all day on bush tracks (plus I’m your size so always hit my head on the roof grab handle in rough stuff) There’s the opportunity for you to do the build that ASPW was criticised for not doing. Solid basic tourer without complexity, ie without all the wanky interior bling like steering wheel controls & knob extensions. Drawers & sleep on top of these in the back instead of a rooftop. Gull wings for access, Outback gear solutions back window bags. 255/85/16 or 265/75/16 tyres on Steelies with a 2” lift. Kleiner’s EGON power system without induction cooking. Good luck, can’t wait😀

Good to see you sticking with a proper 4wd not a ute or wagon that someone at the factory decided that they could fit a front diff and transfer case and call it a 4wd

Wish we had these options in the US. Mid size trucks and suvs with diesels, even off road capable suvs instead of all these crossover all wheel drives. Working on an f150 with ifs and yes, the lifting is quite more. Cutting and trussing the front cross member for the diff relocation, 7 large boxes of parts and bolts just to go up 4" and fit 35 inch tires

Hi Ronny, Keep it simple and save… fix it up with roof conversion, but don’t go overboard with the fit out.. When you are ready let me know I will drive it for you across Australia 🇦🇺 and if you need more we ship it to Malaysia and drive up the globe… the roads ends on the north cap….. one day… Cheers …

I saw your conversation with Andrew and you mentioned you could only leave the Troopy (USA) there for one year ! Here is your solution ship you Troopy to Canada , you have to drive through Canada to Alaska anyway ! Also if you take the Troopy to Mexico you can ship her back to Australia from there ! Just a thought !

Good on you Ronnie. I stick with what I know aswell. If you have accumulated knowledge and experience with your vehicle over years and you know it inside out. You can fix anything that will go wrong with it. Low mileage, good find. 👍

Stick with skinny tyres for the Troopy. They look perfect with tall, skinny tyres (225/95R16 or 255/85R16). No need for huge, wide tyres for an overland and tourer vehicle build like this. Just adds unnecessary weight and leads to extra stress on components.

For me, a Troopy is a Live-in Vehicle with a *_minimalist theme._* That means, rip out all the seats bar the driver's, install a single bed behind the driver (storage underneath), solar, fridge, 100 lt. water + pump for showers, light-weight shelving/cupboards, insect screens and light block-out on windows. Definitely NO roof conversions (maybe a rear passenger door). Passenger side awning for living and cooking area. Fridge and cooking, plus entry to sleeping area via passenger side door. Roof-racks only for solar panel and expeditionary/occasional gear. Lights, diff-locks, etc... (Minimalist is probably not suitable for any KZbinr who needs to sell gear... an observation, not criticism.)

I've got a South African, Jo'burg - straight 6 4.2. Also 2 years ago. Got it to Bulgaria and am still trying to register it, not allowed with RHD's from outside the EU :( Still working on greasing the right palms, hopefully this month :) Can still use it in the grey area with a couple of dodgy documents :)

My suggestion. Get a good rtt (roof top tent) like the Autohome or James Baroud. Clam shell type are super easy. Get a built on ladder. And that’s the start of it. Everyone goes the roof conversion but I don’t see the attraction. I could never cut her up. And of course, the maxx traks table. Go Ronnie

Well I can respect your choice here. I do quite like the Troopy and really look forward to seeing what you do with it. As for the "Feeling" you vehicle part, I know exactly what you mean. There is a connection between a driver and their vehicle that many would never understand, A point where you hear a sound or feel a slight vibration and know that is not normal. That vehicle feels like an extension of yourself and that is exactly how I feel with my Pajero. I would love to see it turned into a mobile home sort of rig with a bed and everything in the back. Ive done that with my Pajero and absolutely love it. So simple and easy when out on trips but with the Troopy you have so many options and so much space to work with so I am excited to see what you do.
