From Willie Nelson - Outlaws & Angels
Utgitt: 2004
Album: "Pancho And Lefty"
Utgitt: 1983
Låtskriver: Van Zandt Townes
Outlaws and Angels is a live album by American country and western musician Willie Nelson. It was recorded on May 5, 2004, at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, California. It was released on September 21, 2004, by the Lost Highway label. The concert featured guest performers singing duets with Nelson on each song and was later aired on cable television.
***
Willie Hugh Nelson (born April 29, 1933) is an American musician, actor, and activist. The critical success of the album Shotgun Willie (1973), combined with the critical and commercial success of Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1978), made Nelson one of the most recognized artists in country music. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound. Nelson has acted in over 30 films, co-authored several books.
***
Toby Keith Covel (born July 8, 1961) is an American country singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer. Keith released his first four studio albums-1993's Toby Keith, 1994's Boomtown, 1996's Blue Moon and 1997's Dream Walkin', plus a Greatest Hits package for various divisions of Mercury Records before leaving Mercury in 1998. These albums all earned Gold or higher certification, and produced several Top Ten singles, including his debut "Should've Been a Cowboy", which topped the country charts and was the most-played country song of the 1990s. The song has received three million spins since its release, according to Broadcast Music Incorporated.
***
Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) was an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler.
Haggard was born in Oildale, California, during the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launch a successful country music career, gaining popularity with his songs about the working class that occasionally contained themes contrary to the prevailing anti-Vietnam War sentiment of much popular music of the time. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, he had 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, several of which also made the Billboard all-genre singles chart.[1] Haggard continued to release successful albums into the 2000s.

Lyrics: Livin on the road my friend, is gonna keep you free and clean Now you wear your skin like iron Your breath as hard as kerosene You weren't your momma's only boy, but her favorite one it seemed She began to cry when you said goodbye And sank into your dreams Pancho was a bandit boy, his horse was fast as polished steel He wore his gun outside his pants For all the honest world to feel Pancho met his match, you know, on the deserts down in Mexico Nobody heard his dyin words, ah but that's the way it goes All the Federales say, they could've had him any day They only let him slip away, out of kindness, I suppose Lefty, he can't sing the blues all night long like he used to The dust that Pancho bit down south ended up in Lefty's mouth The day they laid poor Pancho low, Lefty split for Ohio Where he got the bread to go, there ain't nobody knows All the Federales say, they could've had him any day They only let him slip away, out of kindness I suppose The poets tell how old Pancho fell, and Lefty's livin in cheap hotels The desert's quiet, Cleveland's cold And so the story ends, we're told Pancho needs your prayers it's true, but save a few for Lefty too He only did what he had to do, and now he's growing old All the Federales say, they could've had him any day They only let him go so long, out of kindness I suppose A few gray Federales say, they could've had him any day They only let him go so long, out of kindness I suppose

There's a real cool story about one of Merle's last concerts. Toby was there and Merle was failing, and he wasn't sure how long he could make it on stage. Toby told him he'd help out. Merle asked him how many of his songs he knew and Toby said, "Hell Merle, I know 'em all!" He ended up finishing the show for him.

When you mentioned "west Oklahoma" I had to think for a bit to remember working there back in 1981. Guymon area. April. Thought I was going to see my first tornado (coming from Canada). A fairly dry and desolate place. Friendly people though. Oklahoma has brought us so many great entertainers!

Looking back, I'm thinkin "live like you were dyin" Tim McGraw song (idk who wrote it) is about Toby Keith. That's based on nothing at all, just sayin. Also you and I might've choked on the same dust. I lived in Boise City "at the turn of the century" and Amarillo since '05. Drove a flatbed over the road, probably delivered a million miles of drilling pipe and sacks of 'mud' from MT and ND to TX and LA (seen one or two oilfields)

WOW!!! Do you complaining people want some "cheese with your whine". Most of the musicians that I play music around are amazed at the way Willie is able to break time and rhythm with his voice and guitar and come back to where the band has kept the back beat and rhythm. I will bet you can't do it!!!!!!

To all of those who complain that the singing is off, What do you want? A live performance will always be different each time (especially if the musician isn't lip syncing) and will always be different from the studio engineered version.

+D Ole People always need something to complain about. Fact is, the great majority of them are talentless, vapid bores who couldn't carry a tune in a paper bag.

RIP Townes...you suffered, for sure, and you weren't appreciated as you deserved, but by god you left us some serious music. I have Live at the Old Quarter on repeat; just Townes and his guitar, among friends... the way Townes should be heard.

Townes, lead a troubling life, died too young as a result. Kinda thought he had that James Dean philosophy, " Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse. " Most everyone I know appreciate , Poncho and Leafty.

Boy ol Townes wrote some great songs , this is one of his most popular. The Ballad of Ira Hayes is one of my favorite Townes song's. Merle and Willie do a fine job here , Haggard the great American poet

Just going to leave Toby out? He is a legend himself, imo the most underappreciated country artists of all time and honestly i think he is #1 on my list. The people who were there that night are so freaking lucky.
