"Okie from Muskogee" is a song recorded by American country music artist Merle Haggard and The Strangers, which Haggard co-wrote with drummer Roy Edward Burris. "Okie" is a slang name for someone from Oklahoma, and Muskogee (population 40,000) is the 11th largest city in the state. The song was released in September 1969 as first single and title track from the album Okie from Muskogee, and was one of the most famous songs of Haggard's career.
Okie from Muskogee is the first live album by Merle Haggard and the Strangers released in October 1969 on Capitol Records.
Låtskrivere: Merle Haggard / Roy Burris / Roy Edward Burris
Label: Capitol Records ‎- ST-384
Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) was an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler.
Haggard was born in Oildale, California, during the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launch a successful country music career, gaining popularity with his songs about the working class that occasionally contained themes contrary to the prevailing anti-Vietnam War sentiment of much popular music of the time. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, he had 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, several of which also made the Billboard all-genre singles chart. Haggard continued to release successful albums into the 2000s.

Lyrics: We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee We don't take our trips on LSD We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street We like livin' right, and bein' free We don't make a party out of lovin' We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy Like the hippies out in San Francisco do I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee, A place where even squares can have a ball We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse, And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen Football's still the roughest thing on campus And the kids here still respect the college dean WAnd I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee A place where even squares can have a ball. We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.

The best looking couple in early day country music. Merle was spunky and he called Bonnie gorgeous when he caught up with her in Alaska just before they matried.

As always Meryl was brilliant his voice was so wonderfully varied and in tune. No one seems to comment about his brilliant guitar playing either and with Bonnie there it’s the tops

A terrific version of a classic, beautifully simple (2 chord) song. I love how various artists, including Merle, have done it with varying degrees of irony over the years.

Fun song, although it is a reactionary and self righteous perspective. Funny how people are so in need of being part of a group that they will define their groups membership against another by a list of what’s acceptable. This is drawing a line in the sand for a culture war. It is an “us” versus “them” mentality. How can this possibility lead us forward?
